Spokes - 2008-07-18 10:25 AM I'm 46 and I'll probably never run that fast.

Certainly not with that attitude.

PR is 24:57 for that distance. Its not realistic to think I can cut almost 3 minutes off of my 5K time... which is one reason I've been thinking about quitting racing entirely the past year. The only reason I do it is it forces me to stay in shape.

What does your current PR time matter as to whether you race or not? Isn't the point of racing to help stay in shape, and provide a challenge, as well as a metric to see how training is progressing?

There's more to it than your PR compared to someone else's. Especially someone with more experience.

I agree. But I also know what is realistic to expect given my age and what my body can do. That 24:57 was about as much as I can push it to the wall. I don't know how, other than speed specific training - and dropping from 159 to say maybe 135 - I can shave much more time off of my time.

The reason it bugs me so much is I don't look terribly out of shape from a VISUAL standpoint to many out there racing, and I still get dropped by people that are fatter and older. That just drives me nuts.

Read this.

Run more.  Your times will drop.

That older person probably has several years of running-specific training over you.  Why do you think the most competitive age groups are 35 and over?

Good morning everyone!

It is, and will continue to be a good day!

  • 7:30am, already got an hour in on the bike.
  • A nice breakfast - and a nice cup of coffee is next...
  • I get out at noon today!
  • I have someone doing all my yardwork so I don't have to.
  • Only a 40 min run this afternoon
  • Then happy hour, AND go see Step Brothers (Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly).

Can life GET any better?  I submit that it can not.....

Spokes - 2008-07-18 10:41 AM  Well, there is the downside of 135... instead of looking like say, the Pillsbury Dough Boy, I look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy with a slight case of Ebola or starvation.

But, I'd be faster. Using the 2 sec faster/pound lost rule, that gives me 48 seconds off of my mile time... using a more generous 6 sec faster/pound lost rule that some tri coaches use, that's 2:24 off of my mile time...

Bla bla bla.

Run if you like to run.  If running faster makes it more fun then listen to Scout. (he hasn't steered you wrong yet)

Aw, saw it before I changed it. Didn't want to make you sad, so I deleted it - but you seem to have grasped my actual intention.

PS  - is "nm" is another banned TAN phrase? My bad, if it was.
