maura9900 - 2009-07-19 8:54 AM Holy Cow, I am EXHAUSTED. All. the. time. I thought something was wrong with me... until I looked back at last year's training log and read about how exhausted I was this same time last year. I love training for an Ironman, but I think one of the things I look forward to the most is "sleeping in" the weekend after the race! Last night I couldn't fall asleep because I was thinking about how INSANE this distance is!

Oh thank God I am not the only one!  I seriously think I am having a breakdown.  These past 4 weeks have been crazy..........

Jungle Jenn - 2009-07-19 6:00 PM Did Cardinal Harbour Half on Saturday was a good training day.  Really wish there was some porta potties somewhere on the bike or run course!
River was nice and the course used some of the IM course.

I was there too.  What a day!  Great race.  And fun to see last year's IMLOU winner out there smoking the course.  He looked like a greyhound on the run.  Very cool.

I am following the trifues 36 (http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/ironman-workouts)   week program and just noticed that after this week  things start to slow down  a lot.  From 19 hours weeks to 15 hours until the tapper 2 weeks out.   I am kinda paranoid about slowing up with  so  much time left or am I jsut being paranoid?  What is everyone elses plans look like after this week?

I was out there as well.  It was a tough course.  That guy was MOVING!  I'm glad that I went because it gave me a chance to see parts of the bike course not only racing, but riding it the next day.

I do wish the temperature would have been more like it's going to be tough.  And that finish in the grass was just WRONG!

Was it me or was there a head wind going out AND coming back on 42?

OMG, the grass at Cardinal Harbor- that was evil.  I was cussing at it the entre way...thank goodness that it was at the end and there's no grass like that on the IM run!

Good job everyone that raced, I had the feeling that the majority of the race is also doing Lou.

The official site has updated the participant list for our race.  Some highlights:

  • 3136 registered participants
  • participants come from 21 countries, including Japan, Israel, Great Britain, Mexico, Sweeden, Canada and Panama)
  • As you would expect, the states nearest KY have the most registrants (KY = 253, IN = 212, OH = 224).  8 other states have more than 100 registrants.  People are coming from HI (3 of them), WA (5 of them), and AK (7 of them) -- talk about a tough place to get "heat" training in...

The thing that amazes me about this sport is the worldwide participation.  Pretty cool, but that's a WHOLE LOT of people registered.  Even with a 20% DNS ratio, that's 2500 folks racing.

You think you are emotionally exhausted and fragile now?  Lol ... just wait until the taper begins.  Get ready for a near meltdown.  Take those months of building up this hardcore training routine and then basically dial it back to zero ... for me it was waaaaaaay to much free time on my hands, over thinking EVERYTHING, I actually had a much harder time sleeping.  You arent even at the edge yet, much less getting ready to go over.

Be careful about this upcoming part of your training and prepare for it now.  Its not too soon to be mapping out what you will do outside of training to prepare and find some non-tri related activites to keep you busy (just not rollerblading or pick up basketball games at the Y).  A well conditioned overachieving endurance athlete with nothing to do is a recipe for insanity.

yeah, sounds like I'm in for a mental breakdown.  Good thing I have a REALLY REALLY REALLY dirty house to clean during taper.  Working 60+ hours a week and training I have had little time to clean bathrooms, floors, laundry, ect.  I think its gonna take 2 weeks to clean up 3 months of mess!  I'll focus my energy into the pig sty I live in. ha ha

Does anyone know if Delta Connect flights take bike boxes (hard case, not cardboard) as I'm a little concerned that they may refuse my bike.

The flight across the Atlantic to Atlanta should be OK, it's the flight from Atlanta to Louisville that's concerning me. I've emailed Delta but they are still sitting on the fence with their statement "Some connection carriers and aircraft may not accept bicycles as checked baggage, and may have different limits". Would hate to get to Atlanta and then find that my bike is stuck there! Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Delta.

The Delta Connect Planes are rather small.  Have you checked on the rates?  Delta is known to charge ALOT.  Worse case is you have to drive 6 and a half hours.

Yes, agreed about Delta connect flights.  I took a Delta connector from Atlanta to Cozumel this March and it was a TINY little puddle jumper!  Best of luck.  I agree that driving from Atlanta may be a better option if your stuck!

The grass was waaay wrong.  I kept looking for the short grass but never found it.  I walked part of it just to catch my breath.

And it wasn't just you.  Going out I thought to myself "at least we'll have a tail wind heading home".  NOT.

My wife and kids will be flying from Atlanta to Louisville, so I looked up their flight info.  The Delta Connect from Atlanta to Louisville is operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines (www.flyASA.com), and they will be flying on a Canadair Regional Jet.  There's a chance that this regional jet is too small for a bike box.  The ASA web site on baggage sends you to the Delta web site on baggage information, so that's no help.  I would call the ASA customer service to ask what will be allowed on the plane for your flight number.

Another option, if you are arriving a few days in advance, would be to find the FedEx station near the baggage claim in the Atl airport and just have the box sent overnight to your hotel.  It probably would cost less than Delta/ASA charges for bike transport within the states.  Or just ship it direct from England to Louisville - to a local bike shop where they can have it built and tuned before you arrive, and then ship it back home when you're done.

Best of luck.

Rough week so far. No motivation what-so-ever. Classes start up on Monday, (!!!!), so I'll be making the drive from northern MI to MO on Friday. Get to spend my last day here doing a century ride,( yay...). Heaviest training week for me is next week, combined with classes it's going to be challenging.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest

Come to me taper...

Did my heaviest weekend training to date:  Rode 100 miles on Saturday, swam 2 miles on Sunday, and ran 17 last night.  Starting to feel like I am ready for the race!

Wow! That is a very cool article. A police officer and training for an ironman! Much respect going your way on all accounts. Congrats on the recognition!

Now back to training

Hi,

There is a bike transport service that e-mailed me that may be able to help you out, they are called TriBike Transport. www.tribiketransport.com is the web site. I have never used them but maybe they can help you out.

Good Luck,

Alex

Hello fellow IMKYers!
I'm pretty new to BT, but I've been reading many race reports from previous year's IMKY and this forum to learn as much as I can about the event.  All of you have been very helpful in your own ways, but certainly you are all inspiring to me.  Having said that...Thank you.
I've put in a good deal of work, but still more needs to be done.  I completed my first triathlon of the season this past weekend at Tri Del Sol, in Middleville, near where I live.  It was fun to be out going fast-ish for a change, and I managed a top 11 finish, but it took it's toll a little bit.  Had a solid 2.25 mile swim yesterday and I'm looking for another 100+ mile ride this weekend, along with a long run.  I saw some of you are going to the Whirlpool, Steelhead, Ironman 70.3 next weekend (August 1st).  I too will be going...with the a "dress rehersal" mentality.
Anyway, I guess I just wanted to let you know I appreciate all of your chatting and to let you know I'm out here.  Stay healthy and safe.
It's all about getting to the starting line.
...Until the cannon fires.
Peace,
~Sam

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions/advise with regards to getting my bike shipped to Louisville. I have since contacted the travel agent and they have assured me that Delta are aware that I'm taking a bike and that it will be taken the whole way! At least I now know though that worst case I could get FedEx to transport it from Atlanta, but I hope I don't need that option.
