You can always just use gels / bars and plain water.  Bring a few Nuun or Endurolyte tablets if you need them.  I drank very little of any sports drink until the run.

Hello everyone! I'm not racing IMCda this year, but I did the last two years and I have been living vicariously through you folks for the last couple of months. In reading through the posts I wanted to share a few thoughts. 1. Try not to get too hung up on things like KQing and just have fun! When you get out there and race an ironman it still hurts the same whether it's in Kona or Cda. 2. The swim is full contact for 2 laps if you swim in the 1:05- 1:10 area. There aren't too many ways to avoid it so just enjoy it. 3. Lastly, I don't know if it's been discussed or posted on the website, but the run course is not the same this year. Instead of coming out of T2 and going left you go right and skip the 2 mile out and back section. They decided to tack that distance onto the end of the loop so you all the way up over the "big" hill and back down the other side. You end up almost at Higgins point boat launch. Also, this is the last year for the Hayden bike course. That doesn't concern most of you, but it's interesting to note that this is the only IM course that keeps changing the bike course. Good luck to everyone!! I'll be cheering you all on and wishing I was out there too!

I heard the rumor about the bike course being changed earlier this week but was afraid to post it for fear of causing anxiety.  The rumor I heard said it was changing this year.  I will be very happy if it stays the same for this year even if the new course is less challenging.  I finally figured out how to ride the Hayden course and would love to ride it even stronger this year.

I did not hear anything about the run course change.  The change you described would make the course much more difficult especially on loop two. Running is not my strength, so I am less than thrilled to hear about the possibility of a more challenging run.

The change they should be making is changing the swim to a single loop. CDA may be pinned in on all sides forcing the bike course into neighboring cities (that inevitably want more money causing course changes), but the lake is wide open! I would prefer any extra chop to having to get out of the water and have a-holes literally climbing over me to get around the turnaround first.

It would be nice if Ironman would put the real information out for public consumption.  Until they do, I’ll try to remain calm and carry on

Hey Kiki,I also heard the rumor about the bike change for this year, but I talked to someone that I'm pretty confident knows what's going on and he said nit until next year for the bike. Think... The casino and back. As far as the run goes, th race director said last year at a tri club meating that it was changing this year. Im very confident that the run is a done deal. It will be more difficult, but also less congested.

Not trying to be contrary but I dont mind the powerbar perform. i have trained with it most of last season when it came out and its not as tart or sweet as gatorade endurance. i mix it with carbopro (and hammer endurolytes in very hot days) and off i go.

its just another limon mixer as far as im concerned. daniel may have went off it if he got it warm. none of these taste good warm, but the perform is pretty nasty if its warmed up. thus i use the camelbak bottles with the liner and and refrigerate all night during the hotter day rides.

on a side note, i have begun a second round of optygen hp and think that does give me a legal boost as it claims but i have no way of knowing this.

In the past I've heard the rumor of taking the bike course south on 95.  I think that this is a bad idea.  Cars going 65+ don't mix well with bikes going under 20mph.

i guess the 20 or so miles on 95 up to CDA aren't bad, now that they are separated and two lanes. . as a kid, we drove 95 from Moscow to CDA all the time (skied a ton growing up), and that road is the worst!

Wow - my fingers are crossed that they don't change the bike course this year. I LOVE this bike course! I'm also a slow runner and am very sad to hear the run course is changing...

I agree, the Hayden area is very scenic and it'd be sad to see it go.  Hopefully they can work things out with the local governments.

I, too, am super sad to hear about the run course. I liked how you passed SN right away, twice... and my family was camped out before that little out-and-back and it was so fun to see them twice within 15-20 minutes! (And to pass SN, what, 4 times?) Wah!! Oh well, it is what it is!! Owie on going up the entire hill, and the back side, too!!!

Hello. 410 is a great hill. My wife always tells me she will drop me at the bottom and make me ride up. I try to stay off the main road and ride on the back roads up here. I found a couple real good hills that I can use to train on. Are you going to be doing the Capital City marathon? I did it last year and it was a fun race, seemed very well put on. This year for the sake of my body I will be doing the half.

Do we have an updated course map with all the changes? Seems like the main CdA site still has all of the old maps (going through Hayden and stuff)

I was planning to do the Capital City half, but now I have an injured ankle so it doesn't look like I'll make it.  The half is a fun race as well.  The hills and the date relative to CdA should make it good training run for you. I'm supposed to be helping with registration this year so maybe I'll see you there.

Howdy all - just back from some non-CdA focused skiing!

I'm not quite ready to ascribe to this position, but I will share it.  In a moment lacking all tact (and sometimes I think this type of advise should be served that way), one slowtwitcher rather infamously said of Powerbar PERFORM something to this effect...

"Perform is pretty much gatorade endurance nutritionally.  But for thousands of IMers who biked way too hard in 2010, it is almost certainly the reported reason for their digestive troubles on the run."

Many serious and scientifically minded triathletes agreed with that sentiment.  And I do SUSPECT there is a lot of truth to it, though I also know some people I really respect who have struggled with it even in training... which seems to suggest there's more too it than poor race execution.  But don't be so quick to blame the sports drink on your digestive system shutdown... it's usually a result of racing beyond your ability coupled with eating/drinking MORE than what you should have.

As far as I know the run course is the only thing changing this year.  The bike course is supposed to change next year.  There hasn't been an official announcement, but all the locals I know say it's a done deal.
As far as the Perform goes... It's not that bad.  It seemed to get a bad rap in Louisville when it was over 90 degrees and people had all kinds of digestive problems.  Let's face it though, I haven't made it through an Ironman without at least a small digestive problem.
They had it in Hawaii where it was again hot, but it wasn't all that bad.  I'm not a huge fan, but then again I'm not a huge gatorade guy either.  Like Josh said it's something you need to get used to if your planning on living off the course, but that would true for anything they offered on the course.

I trained with the free case of perform last year & used it on the course of HIM Racine.   I didn't mind the taste, I like that it's not super sweet.  I didn't have any problems with my digestive tract, and the heat index was 100 on the run.  It did stain my water bottles orange.  Can this be purchased in stores yet, or is it still an online only item?

It's truly not that big of a deal. The back side of the hill is easy, If I remember right the only part that is deleted is the dike road around the college.

I don't know what plan you're following but it seems awfully early to be going that far. The BT Plan I'm following doesn't hit those distances til late March/early April.... just a thought.

I agree with you. At Louisville, a lot of factors played into me having issues on the run, namely heat and running out of water on the bike, forcing me to drink the Perform. I guess I was just so used to one method that I did not like substitutions. If it works for others, thats awesome (and a hell of a lot easier come race day).

Totally depends on the plan/athlete/goals.  If a plan is designed to take you from a moderate base to IM shape, you won't see that type of workout right now... because the base is still improving.  For someone who started with a large base, those workouts could be maintenance mode (though it doesn't sound like it if 3Aims was "totally spent")... however we should be careful comparing where we are on a plan with where someone else is.

GNC sells it.  I picked up a couple of bottles to test.  Do not try it unless you are exercising.  I find it is like Gatorade where it tastes much better the thirstier you are.  If you pop one open just for  sip to try it out you'll think it's horrible (I did).  but 3-4 miles into a ruin it tastes pretty good.

It was more of a temp thing.  My body has quickly lost any memory of what it is like to train in 70 degree weather.  Plus, I had no water on my long run.  I'm doing the Fink Comp plan with a few tweaks.  Sat was scheduled to be a 2:30 ride and :15 run.  I just added an extra 25 minutes on my run.  Sun was a :30 ride and 1:15 run.  Again, just added 30 extra minutes to the run due to an upcoming half marathon.  I always hammer the living crap out of my bike rides which was also a factor.  I'm sure someone can tell me why that is dumb, but I find it really easy to recover for the bike.
