Ok, so today was "Kick Friday" at my Masters Swim.  I. do. not. like. kick. Friday.  To be honest, I don't think it was planned, and suspect it was mainly for me (wow, what an ego eh?  But I think that because my kick is so wide and creates so much drag I may as well be dragging a lifeguard buoy (or a lifeguard) behind me...).  We were doing vertical kicking drills, torpedo kicking drills, holding on to the wall kicking drills.  Me no likey.  I get so gassed.  Anyway, by the end of the session, the coach was telling me I was looking 100% better, so I guess I have to change my mind to me likey.  I know it takes a long time, if ever, to become a decent swimmer, but each time I feel like I am getting it, something else comes up.  I guess that is how anything goes if you are trying to improve though.

For the weekend, I have a 2 hour ride planned for tomorrow.  It may be broken up into 2 different somewhat shorter rides as my son plays baseball about 25km away from my house, so I think I may ride there, watch the game, and then ride home.  That way I get to do both.  The route has a couple good hills and a couple long flat sections, so a good mix.  A short run to do as well.  Sunday easy ride and medium run.   Oh, and if the tire gods gave me a flat on my car today, they can't give me a flat on my bike this weekend right?  RIGHT?? Laughing

Hope everyone's Friday has gone/is going well.

I don't know for sure what all the kicking drills are, but I do know that vertical kicking drills are brutal!

This will be a weird workout weekend for me since I can neither run nor bike, so just a swim on Saturday on tap.  I'll probably try to get a longer then normal session in.  On the plus side, that frees up my weekend so I can take care of some yard work I've been putting off.

Happy weekend all!

go Jo - Big Sur whatever that is sounds fun!  Why doesn't HIM sound fun.  If you call it triathlon 70.3 it sounds less intimidating, that is it's new name in my mind.  It's just a tri just longer!

Felicia - not a bad mum.  Our children all make choices regardless of our direction, it's good the school have consequences for these actions.  Nothing you could have done here - I think sucks that you have to wear some of the consequences too!

I had a good friday night - went straight to the pool after work and did 2.5km in 1 hour.  Not fast or pretty but very manageable.  Figure at that speed I could do 70.3 swim in 44mins.  But there are not turns to deal with and no kids in the lane, plus a wetsuit and hopefully some drafting, I'd like to knock it off in around 40mins.

I then came home and jumped on the trainer for an hour RPE3 and RPE5 it said.  Well I did half an hour hard then half an hour in the biggest gear - awesome!  Wondered why I fell alseep on the couch!

This morning I am heading off for a 2 hour run at 9am when my hubby returns from his group personal training session.  It's a gorgeous sunny autumn morning, not warm for sure but the beach will be lovely to run beside today.

That's it for today, gonna do some more tyre change practice, why not!  Then I have a facial booked at the spa this afternoon, a 3 year old birthday party at 5.30 and that's Sautrday done

That was already it for me before the tyre changing BUT THAT IS SO IMPORTANT AND CLEVER, JO!!!

No one should have to bail on a race because of a flat tyre, or even lose much time. Even butterfingers can get it down to 3 minutes for a front and 4-5 min for a rear. REAR TYRE you silly Manatees ... if only I could change my rear that fast ...

Warm hugs to Fotis and Artemis!

Vertical kicking drills are brutal indeed ... but a very succinct reminder of what needs to be happening with your kick. Also good swim-specific strength training and for that ever-elusive but critical skill, "water-feel."

Have a good Saturday swim and make the most of it!

Kirsten ... I hear you on hating something that's probably necessary ... remember to compare yourself to others learning to swim well, not those who already do. And most importantly, compare yourself to how you were X swim sessions ago. It's a tough learning curve for an adult. And LISTEN TO YOUR COACH ... dang lady, you improved 100% over ONE swim session! Unfortunately ... that rarely happens after swim sessions we like (at least for me!)

I really need to be less clumsy...I had to step up on a shelf 'thing' this morning to turn on a frame (I do this every day, no biggie)--as I step down to the step stool, my foot slips right off, I think "ok, I'll just find the ground with the other foot, its all good" and in slow motion, I fell and landed on the concrete floor--FLAT on my back. Way to go. Thankfully, my head didn't hit the floor, and I didn't break the 2-way radio attached to my belt...AND I didn't set off my pepper spray--also on my belt (part of our required uniform for safety.)...I do have pretty bruising on my back, but other than that I think I am okay...just glad no one saw it.Foot in mouth

Oh well, off to do some running, biking, and swimming...Smile

5 weeks til HIM and I've done a 20km run this morning.  Jeff Galloway ratio of 2min run 1min walk - done in 2.29, not my fastest but it's training not racing so I am more than happy.  Fastest I've raced it is 2.15 so that is not too shabby at all!

And legs were tired after 1hour swim 1 hour trainer last night.

Starting to feel I've got lots of training in the bank ready to use with interest earned on race day!

I'm a big fan of Gallowalking--for myself and whoever else likes trying it and it works for them. Lots of very good reasons! And that was a terrific run.

You absolutely have lots of training in the bank for race day--the endurance you're building up is outstanding and any speed you need will kick in on race day. Do keep practicing bike skills and bottle handoffs though, that kind of thing

Got a run in today.  Still sore from my race last weekend. I'm stressing about the missed workouts last weekend (long bike and long swim) plus the fact that I have to fit my 3 long sessions in to 2 days this weekend and fit 6 of next weeks workouts in before a trip to Denver for the weekend! I have a race in two weeks but its not my A race so I'm not super worried about my results (but I'm sure I'll be dissapointed if I don't do well).

Vent over.  I hope all my fellow Manatees have awesome weekends!

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. It's been a tough semester for parenting. As Chris mentioned, my oldest son is living with us now, and he is challenging. Amazing, but challenging. He's "home schooled" taking college classes and he even though he's 16, he gets the highest grades in his classes . . . when he turns his work in. It's just so frustrating. He is at serious risk for bombing out this semester, and there is absolutely no reason for it.

And then there are good things about him -- tonight he was in a one act for the directing class and did a great job. Monday night, his Improv group is giving a show, and he is absolutely hysterical.

Ben is the same way as his brother regarding school work -- blows off stupid work and gets Ds and Fs (not in everything, thankfully). So at his conference this week, I seriously asked his teacher if he needed to go to summer school or if he was going to have to re-do 5th grade. The teacher looked at me like I was insane, and said, in front of my son: "Oh, we don't really base anything on these grades. It's all about state assessments, and he's at the 98th and 88th percentiles in reading (he reads at a 12.9 grade level) and math, so of course he'll go on to 6th grade, and of course, he doesn't need summer school."

I was so mad. On the way home, Ben was giddy, "These grades don't matter at all!" I told him that they do indeed matter, to me. Is it any wonder then, that he blew off the late paper?

Rant over. We will get through this.

Thanks for listening and understanding.

I have a swimming question.

I did a 45 minute swim workout this afternoon -- one of the longest I've ever done. I know that's still not much, but I'm hoping to extend it to a real workout by the end of the summer.

Anyway, my shoulders are really sore tonight. I'm wondering if that is okay or if that means that I'm not powering my stroke from my lats. I was thinking about so many things while I was swimming today, I'm afraid I wasn't using my lats consistently.

Sorry, I don't have pictures, but I'm hoping maybe Yanti can give some advice just by the description of where I'm sore.

I had a case of the sore shoulders last year at one point. My coach watched me swim and noticed that when I did my pull through the water, I basically was entering the water with my hand on level with my arm and keeping it there--so I was pulling with my whole arm instead of bending my hand at the wrist. I started pulling with my hand only, the pain went away, and my stroke became more efficient.

That might be it, or not....its one idea, at least, and something you can easily check on your own! Smile

No, its a little local race--part of the "Weekend Warrior Games" they put on(There's an adventure race, the X-treme run and a kids race--I'm doing the X-treme Run: 1/2 mi. beach dash, 6 mile trail run w/orienteering, and obstacle course)--I think its only the second year its being done--last year, there were only 9 racers! I hope there are more this year...

kgore - 2012-04-27 9:34 PM No, its a little local race--part of the "Weekend Warrior Games" they put on(There's an adventure race, the X-treme run and a kids race--I'm doing the X-treme Run: 1/2 mi. beach dash, 6 mile trail run w/orienteering, and obstacle course)--I think its only the second year its being done--last year, there were only 9 racers! I hope there are more this year...

Cool!  I haven't done orienteering since high school--loved it!
