Well, I skimmed TI and pulled some useful things out. Very simple concepts really. Just the ones involving relaxing and looking at the bottom of the pool/body of water. DUH! It hadn't occurred to me. But I think that is just because I literally had no idea what I was doing. I grew up on a lake and swam all the time but it wasn't 'real' swimming.

I'd love getting my stroke butchered by you. I'm sure it's just laughable.

The TI coaches pull their hair out about people who just "pulled some useful things out" ... the whole basis of their system is (basically) to erase everything you're already doing and re-build your stroke from the most elementary aspects up.

However, I agree with you. There's good stuff there to be piecemealed out, and the whole system does help a lot of people.

If you can do a killer doggypaddle, you already have all the makings of the perfect stroke. It's just putting it together and yardage.

I'm told it's a most enjoyable process getting butchered by me. Really.

I keep thinking when I swim better I'll post a video for help... Kinda defeats the purpose, no? I guess I don't want anyone to see how pathetic i really am...

Well, it's safe warm protected-waters bay here in the Pod, so consider just posting a link here.

I'll post run vid if you post swim vid. Trust me, that far more than a fair trade.

Oh I wouldn't DREAM of putting it out in "main BT"!  Sometimes it feels like ST "out there".  Besides, I've got the bestest swim expert right here!

Chris, I am so sorry for your daughter.  That is a tough one to get through.  I'm glad to hear she is moving on, even if slowly and painfully.

Is that CA intl? I have wanted to do that as well, I know a lot of peeps use it to qualify for the trials. It's in Sac, too, no? I have family there.

Indeed CA Int'l, and in Sac. Where is that family? Would they be able to get you to the start or where shuttle buses take you to the start? And home from the finish?

It is an outstanding, well-organized race. It's not the Most anything (Most scenic, Most people, Most whatever) but it's one of the best marathons to do because it ranks solidly in every category, without any downsides. It's a fast race because of the slight net downhill, but it's not flat.

A possible downside is that the weather could wind up being just like it is in Seattle. But while it might be chilly, it won't be as chilly as Seattle, and while it might rain, it's still much less chance of rain in Sac.

Oh, and Kate lives there. She'll take you to the zoo ... be careful, or you'll wind up an exhibit and might not be able to leave. But I'm sure you'll be cared for and fed very well.

She lives in Arden-Arcade near the American River. Whatever that means. I am too lazy to look up how close to the start/finish that is. But, it's something to keep in mind. Lynn has done that marathon a few times, right?

Ohhh yeah, the zoo!!!!!!

I've done it once and LynnLynn's done it at least once, yes.

Hey, I need a favor. Would you please look at the last post in this thread and tell me if I'm going to roll my eyeballs? 'Cause I really don't want to waste an eyeball-roll.

Uhh yeah, I'm thinkin' you'll roll your eyes. He posted a link to Bernoulli's principle...

But this may be out of my league.

She. And guaranteed she didn't read my post closely, and misinterpreted BOTH what I posted and exactly how Bernoulli's principle does (and doesn't, which I clarified) apply.

But what the hell do I know, it's basic math

Also, I don't slip turn. I'm scared. Embarassed I have tried...but I end up doing this like...half twisting front flip and a nose full of water.

ok, sorry to interject, but anyone who can do 1:50 100's a few days after a mary and NOT HAVING BEEN IN A POOL IN MONTHS, does not have a laughable stroke.  Unless you were wearing fins.  But not even then.

I think he missed the point.

What does everyone have on their plate this weekend?

Tonight I'm going a local park where they are rebroadcasting TdF stage 17 and projecting it on a huge inflatable screen. Plus is has a beer garden. Now I'm just trying to find someone to go with me. All my friends say something along the lines of, "Bike racing ewwwwww"

Tomorrow I am going to the Cap hill block party, which is a music festival and then doing some other stuff around home. I was supposed to go camping with the fam but I just need some time to move at my own pace for a few days.

This weekend will be another trip to Orlando. Both of my daughters live there. The youngest was planning a wedding, but that has fallen apart. But it seems to have opened a few other doors that she wouldn't have knocked on in the past, so silver lining and all. And she is figuring out how strong she really is.

Sorry to hear, Chris, but I suspect if she is anything like her dad, she will be 'painting a masterpiece' before long.  Glad you are able to go and support her through.

Yeah, agarose ... it's okay, he's the font of both unsolicited and unuseful advice.

There are quite a few people, and quite a few posts, and I know you feel the same way because you don't post in Tri Talk much, where I want to ask ... "You have reading comprehension problems, don't you? I'm sorry about that."

WARNING

I have recently had my medications adjusted so if I seem meaner or snarkier than usual, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Or it's just my true self coming out. Whichever.

YET another new account (I think he was up to 7 or 8 by the time he FINALLY got booted ... just could not change his posting style) ... I think I'm the only person here who actually liked the guy. Or at least his advice, which most of the time was razor-sharp spot-on.

It's okay. Clearly Ernest Maglischo, as well as all the theoretical hydrodynamics guys at Harvard and Princeton, don't understand basic math either.

Damn, I'm glad the mentor groups aren't modded.

Don't think some of them aren't closely observed ... they are ... but they are not modded and that is exactly as it should be.

I keep thinking when I swim better I'll post a video for help... Kinda defeats the purpose, no? I guess I don't want anyone to see how pathetic i really am...

Post now. I did it, and no one can be as poor a swimmer as I am. I got a lot out of not only posting it, but looking at it, as well. I didn't really know what I looked like when I was swimming.

Yep. I don't know that many Olympians and I cannot imagine how or why this managed to come up in conversation with every one of 'em, but troof. I can only imagine what SCALE upon which it happens at that level ...

It was certainly the case when I was traveling internationally for swimming, and we would usually get housed in some kind of dorm, hostel or budget hotel. There was also an awful lot of booze and due to far less stringent drug testing back then, lots of other recreational substances. You wouldn't think so with a bunch of top athletes, but then again we were all also mostly teens to mid-20s. It was like unleashing a bunch of starving Labradors on an endless sea of Alpo.

heh heh heh

Well, speaking of eye rolling, did you see that persons post in the thread you created to fatten my head? He said I should use a Garmin so that I can avoid walking the end of my marathon. Huh?

I think he missed the point.

Whichever.

I wondered about that too.

I wouldn't be giving ANY kind of advise to someone who'd been running a year and SMASHED a race like Salty did.  Rather, I think I would be begging for said smasher's advise!

hehe, thanks. I had to hold my tongue. But what I really wondered is why they had the idea I walked. I said I slowed down but that's more like... down to an 8 min pace vs low 7s.

I just have a hard time believing that looking down at a watch is miraculously going to make me run faster.

I admittedly screwed up on my pacing early on but that was because of the A. the tunnel and B. because I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone so that I know my absolute limits. Looking down at a watch wouldn't change that.

She's really defensive whenever anyone says anything slightly negative about TI. Shelia's book was pretty critical of it, from what I know of TI, and the criticism was only thinly veiled. But hey, people disagree. We're supposed to disagree. If everyone shared the same opinion about technique on any subject, we, as human beings, would never grow. It's only a problem when people take the criticism personally, and I think sometimes she does when it comes to TI.
