Back to traing tomorrow with a bike ride with a friend.  And I'm considering crossfit.  I start officially training for crosscountry ski season late Oct/early Nov, but in the interm and maybe even continuing into the early ski season I'm thinking of 1-2 days per week of Crossfit.  Has anyone done it? Any thoughts?  I've been told to not go balls to the walls for risk of injury - so I wasn't planning on going all out nuts, but just though it would be something new and fun for a few months...  ???

Oh man, so do you compete XC skiing? I tried it for the first time last year and LOVED it. Well, until I tried to go downhill not realizing XC skis don't have edges like downhill skis ... long story. Anyway my FIL/MIL did a really cool endurance XC competition in Canada and I would like to maybe do it with them. It's a perfect combination of running and ice skating.

As far as crossfit goes, I have a lot of friends who do it. They have experienced some pretty serious gains in fitness and also some pretty serious injury (certainly not all of them.) Overall, I would say it's a little more geared towards the 'bulking up' crowd with lots of emphasis on compound lifting and not all that much endurance. I think it all depends on what you are looking to get out of it. If it's for S/B/R or XC skiing, I'd say nothing is going to help you more than doing more S/B/R XC but if it's for overall fitness, I'd say it's a great option.  It's certainly not for everybody.

Pippa "Pace Booty" Middleton put in a really respectable time at Vasaloppet, which is no joke.

Hey, so are any of you reading Running the Edge? (The book that we were able to download for free)

I'm about halfway through and am really enjoying it. I sometimes thought I was a little crazy for all the parallels between life and running that I saw and this book gives me a little validation Wink

Good reminder. Not like I'll be doing anything (certainly SHOULD not be doing anything) the next couple weeks ...

I realized I got my training plan totally wrong ... it's supposed to be three weeks build, one pull back. I've been doing one week build, three pull back!

I am really dreading this surgery tomorrow. I just said that, didn't I? Then again I need this ridiculousness over with; this infection has really brought me to my knees.

Not that that's a bad place for a toothless girl to be, I suppose. For others, anyway.

One step forward, three steps back (sang Paula Abdul style

At least it will be over!!! I hear ya on dreading surgery but you KNOW your life is going to significantly improve, even minus a tooth

Crap that reminds me, I need to figure out when I need to start my marathon training (18 weeks) for Boston and seriously, trying to count backwards 18 weeks has been nearly impossible. I keep messing up and getting different dates. Ugh. Idiot.

I'll bet Pippa didn't crash on her skis so bad that part of the boot was still attached to her ski and the other part attached to her foot.

She's not *quite* hot enough for that, unlike some other awesome endurance athletes I know.

Echo you on the CrossFit. It can be a lot of fun (in addition to the pros and cons mentioned). If you go that route, make sure you have a very knowledgeable instructor who emphasizes form and appropriate levels, not just some CF yahoo lemming who barely puddled through the (one day?) instruction course.

I am reading it, as well. I'm not writing down all of the "homework," but it has given me a lot to think about. I like it.

I teach online, and in my posts last night, I noticed I was talking about writing and being successful in school and life, but almost everything I said applied to running -- "Set goals. Adjust goals when necessary. Don't let life derail your plan. Be willing to set aside time goals if life does give you trouble. But don't abandon the goal completely. Keep your head in the game. Keep moving forward." The class I'm teaching is a First Year Sequence class, and as you can see, I end up doing lots of cheer leading! lol

So yes. Life and running. I had a professor in graduate school who was fond of saying: "I'm sick and tired of people saying baseball is like life! They have it all wrong. Life is like baseball!" That's how I feel about running sometimes. I learn something in running and can apply it to life. It doesn't always work the other way around. So life is like running.

But Who's on first!?! Wink

I haven't done the homework yet either but I do plan to. I am actually a little nervous about writing down all of my flaws. I'm going to need multiple sheets of paper! Then I am going to need to burn those sheets.

I was considering that. I was just a little torn thinking about how a cheater is going to still win in the end, making money selling books about cheating and dragging his teammates down with him (whether they are guilty or not.) I don't know. I'm not saying I am right, either. That was just my thought process.

What say you Manatees?

*Also important, I watched the Marion Jones documentary and got a lot out of it. So ... yeah.

I'm about a quarter of the way through the book and so far it's well written.  In some ways it reminds me of the a Krakauer presents information.

I checked my hematocrit level from the bloodwork on at my last physical -- 40.6.

I asked for a copy of my bloodwork at the last physical and in the book they were talking about it so I looked it up.

If you feel weird buying it, maybe you could get it from the library?

Keep moving forward." The class I'm teaching is a First Year Sequence class, and as you can see, I end up doing lots of cheer leading! lol

So yes. Life and running. I had a professor in graduate school who was fond of saying: "I'm sick and tired of people saying baseball is like life! They have it all wrong. Life is like baseball!" That's how I feel about running sometimes. I learn something in running and can apply it to life. It doesn't always work the other way around. So life is like running.

I'm actually reading The Secret Race now.

Are you using Krakauer to reel me in? Because you KNOW that's gonna work! Smile

Hmmmm, I should get mine checked! I would be curious.

If y'all lived close I could check it for ya here at work...

Hey, so are any of you reading Running the Edge? (The book that we were able to download for free)

I'm about halfway through and am really enjoying it. I sometimes thought I was a little crazy for all the parallels between life and running that I saw and this book gives me a little validation Wink

I am reading it, as well. I'm not writing down all of the "homework," but it has given me a lot to think about. I like it.

I asked for a copy of my bloodwork at the last physical and in the book they were talking about it so I looked it up.

If you feel weird buying it, maybe you could get it from the library?

heh, that's what I would do anyway. I use out library system's digital checkout for my kindle. Workse pretty well.

I guess I was just speaking more to the concept.

SmileSmileSmileSmile MANATEES - I feel so much better this morning.  Dinner last night a block of chocolate and a beer, seemed to settle my stomach so much easier than chicken soup!

I'm not training today though, one more day's rest I think.  Then a swim and a run tomorrow.

Even funnier I was feeling so nauseous all week I even did a pregnancy test this morning - phew not pregnant, I'm 47 that would not be funny but a great get out clause for IM!

Thanks for being there for me this week, feel like I've not been there for you all but I am really.xxx

But Who's on first!?! Wink

I haven't done the homework yet either but I do plan to. I am actually a little nervous about writing down all of my flaws. I'm going to need multiple sheets of paper! Then I am going to need to burn those sheets.

Well, I didn't type it all together like that in real life. The one liners were in various posts throughout the evening. lol

And yes. I don't think there's enough paper in the world to detail my flaws . . .

So easy to write down copious amounts of one's flaws, however most of us struggle to write even 5 good things about ourselves....I've been on a few courses for work over the years and always writing down one's weaknesses - easy, strengths soooo difficult.

Glorious day here in Melbourne, very windy but goiing to be 80 degrees, lovely.  Tomorrow back down to 65 that's how the weather goes in Melbourne - Four Seasons in One Day....

AAANNNNNNNDDDDDDD--------I am a student manatee again! I got an email this morning telling me they approved my appeal. Hopefully, the financial aid money they approved will still include the extra bit for books, parking, and crap like that....I kinda laughed when I saw it too. Late last night, I could NOT sleep, I just had too much going on in my head. So I kept thinking and thinking--I finally just said "screw it--I am done with school--they'll say no, and I will move on...I will have weekends again, I will be able to focus on work stuff much better; it will be an IMPROVEMENT!" I actually was believing it and looking forward to being free from school. Hm. Maybe I should have done that a month ago. Go figure.

I guess that means I should absolutely NOT believe that I will get that job in Seattle, right? Laughing

So, of course, this all meant that I had to get some research done and right a solid book report tonight. Cause its due tomorrow...Sweep out the old stress, bring on the new stress! Oh well. 2 months left for this semester--then only one more after that!

Thank you manatees for putting up with me recently!
