Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Aero helmet or not? My tri bike last summer came with an aero helmet. By far not a top of the line one. I have yet to wear it on a ride either so I don't even know if I would tolerate it or not. I've done some reading online and after watching Kona this last year, it seems that some like them and some don't. One of the things I have read is that if you don't keep your head in that aero position you actually lose efficiency because of the tail. I know regularly I move my head around quite a bit while riding. IM CDA I have heard can be windy on sections of the course and with a side wind the aero helmet doesn't help at all either. Or at least I have read that. So thoughts on using one or using my road bike helmet? |

Or at least I have read that. So thoughts on using one or using my road bike helmet? I was speaking with the LBS the other day about getting an aero helmet. They recommended the new Giro Air Attack. Its one of the new style aero helmets that are like a regular helmet without the vents, that all the pros were sporting at the TdF last year. They apparently are testing better then the regular style helmets in the wind tunnel, and eliminate the air brake effect with looking down. There was an intresting video that I watched online the other day when searching info on the Air Attack that described the features. Might be an option. Edited by BigDaddyD79 2013-01-30 1:51 PM |

Or at least I have read that. So thoughts on using one or using my road bike helmet? I was given one last fall, after my HIM. I got to use it for about a month and a half. I've read the reports and they are supposed to be more helpful than a disk. I also deal with a sturdy crosswind off of lake Huron, but even with a cross wind, you still have to break wind (a don't know what it is really called, it just seemed a funny way to say it) for foreward momentum, still making the helmet effective than not having one. Since I have teen aged daughters, mine has rules. I can't wear it in group rides. I can't wear it if I go through town. If I ride to one of their sporting events or from one of their practices, I can't wear it. If they have friends over, I can't wear it. All of these rules also apply to tri and bike shorts. Ah yes...last year I had to pick my daughter up after school from a cross country meet at Stoney Creek Metropark. I figured it was a good excuse to bug out of work early and get some miles in outside. The problem was I had to meet up with my daughter to find out what time she would be done and where to meet, etc. I showed up in a matching DeSoto bike kit, helmet, gloves, etc. She was absolutely mortified. Also, my girls are still mortified that I strapped on the ol' wetsuit in the middle of our group camping trip last summer. The trip is all dad's and daughters. My response was be happy your dad's in decent shape and looks okay without a shirt on or in a tight wetsuit for that matter.... |

From what I've heard from Ernesto and other friends, the aero helmet is the best bang for your buck in terms of equipment that you can get to improve your performance on long bike segments. Last year I got a really cool Rudy Project aero helmet from our mentor Ernesto, which I got to use for my 1st Ironman in TX and then a 1/2 IM in Guatemala. It was comfortable enough and I like to think that I went faster because of it, and if not, at least you feel faster which has to count for something. Also, I would not use it for anything less than a 1/2 IM and haven't seen many people using them for Oly tris, at least down here in Guatemala

Teen aged daughters still love their Daddy, but they will be ruthless and say their unfiltered opinion, especially about my clothing choices. Mine are all good about wetsuits, because they grew up wearing them. Lake Huron is too cold to swim in without one for most of the year. |

I'm not as thin as I could be, still have a few pounds in the middle to loose (5'9" - 160). Bottom line with aero helmet - if you wear it, you better be able to walk the talk. There is a definitely a real aero benefit and I felt that it gave me .25 mph - .5 mph benefit over a HIM distance. Not huge, but some time savings. Oh yeah, and I love embarrass my daughters with it too. I once picked them up for a carpool after a ride and left the helmet on.
