Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got a 3.5 mile run in yesterday on a mix of asphalt and trails, plus a swim and core workout last night. Invented a new swim set - this is designed for sprint distance to build your VO2 max while forcing active recovery: 500 SKIPS WU (that's 100 each swim/kick/IM(back)/pull/swim) - last 50 build)MS: n x (25 hard/50 hard/75 hard/100 pull easy, recovery is 10% of interval) n is the number of times you can complete it in your workout, each set is 250 This is almost a non-stop main swim set, your max rest is 10 seconds but that 100 recovery really resets everything. |

I actually have an account with them too. I like the idea of MFP b/c it connects to Garmin Connect, but that doesn't help me if I don't use it ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by Fourteenkittens Originally posted by nicole14e I've been really unhappy at my job lately. I leave feeling like I didn't accomplish anything, and feeling extra tired. Actually in the process of applying for a new position at UA and the prospect has me really excited. I would interact with people more rather than sit behind a desk crunching numbers all day, and I would work for a company the is all about fitness, which I think will inspire me more to be consistent with my workouts. I also need to get my boyfriend out on runs with me to help motivate me as well. We'll see about that one ![]() Good luck with the job application! I haven't been super enthusiastic about my job lately either (work has slowed waaay down and I feel like I'm not earning my keep), but haven't had the motivation to find something new. So you've impressed me! DQ - I love the board! Thanks! I was actually on a webinar one day and was like, what on earth am I doing with my life? Just happened to look at the UA career openings and found this job that fits me perfectly. Hopefully they think so too! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It has definitely been a slow rumbling start today. Went back to bed when my alarm went off, fell asleep for two more hours, so I guess I needed sleep. Then did some SLOW strength training and a gentle yoga session (#136) for my "off" day workout. Finally rolled into work about 10am (gotta love non-teaching days!). Now I'm trying to figure out how to motivate myself to write. Never an easy challenge for me. In other news, if they don't cancel it, I'm going to my first tri club meeting tonight! I wanted to go to the last meeting, but they cancelled it due to "lack of availability", which is something that seems to happen frequently. Not sure I'll like the disorganization that seems like comes along with this group, but I'm interested enough to give it a try (pun intended!). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gretchen: glad you were able to get some extra sleep – it sounds like you needed it. But I also love the fact that you're able to get in some weight training as well instead of blowing that off. God knows I would've been tempted. I thought about your Tri club – what would happen if you offered to help lead the group. I know that the group would benefit with your discipline and be inspired by it. Plus with all that you've learned over the last two years I know that you have a lot to share and the people would benefit from working out with you. You come along way and now it's your turn to do some mentoring! DQ |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nicole – sorry for not being able to reply directly to your message but I'm on the trainer getting in a work out, so I don't have my computer with me. But I have two thoughts for you. First it totally sucks when you hate your job and you owe it to yourself to take action so that you can find a job that not only you like but that values you as an employee. Second I'd like to propose a challenge to you because I need to make it my mission to lose weight in the next month which I will explain in my next post… So here's the challenge which of us can go the longest with recording all of our food every day? Whoever is the first person to not record something within the course of a given day either on paper or M FP earns a Coors light penalty. Deal? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yesterday I went to the trainer and two interesting and exciting things happened. First he was able to show me just how incredibly weak my painful shoulder was and how my core is not working in conjunction with that weak shoulder. I was blown away… With my arm lifted he was able to push it down with one finger… And this guy is about is as muscular as a mouse. Besides the fact that it was embarrassing it shows me the need to really focus on the PT exercises he has assigned me so that I can get better. The second thing he did was make me an offer I couldn't refuse. As you know I've gained 25 pounds in the last two months since getting fired from my job and he made a bet with me to try to turn that around. He bet me that if I lost 15 pounds in 30 days he would train me for free for my Iron Man. That's an $800 value and in my mind the guy is worth even more than that. While I think the 15 pounds in 30 days is unrealistic – I think he's trying to get me to think of all the things that I can do to help myself and believe it or not I'm going to give up beer for a month. I'll still try a beer but I will spit that out after giving it a taste just like all those snooty wine people do right- Juan? It's going to be royally tough… But if I can drop the weight and change my mindset it will be worth all the pain and frustration. Today's workout is 45 minutes nice and easy on the trainer followed by 15 minutes of yoga and PT. Tomorrow if my calves and Achilles feel better I'm gonna go for a walk… Nice and slow because I hear what you guys are saying about healing up |

Sounds like a great bet: 7.5 kg in a month for a free IM training plan!! I wish I could find someone like him around here...... Go for it!! Juan |

Take the bet and get on it!!! I would kill to be able to afford a coach! - I can't afford the gear I want (race wheels and a power meter) much less a coach; but I am totally seeing the value in having one - I'm feeling a little lost with my plan and my back. Take the deal!!! A month off beer is worth it! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question for y'all.... I have my longer trainer ride this Saturday (with any luck, outside), and I'm not sure my back is up to a 2:30 ride. Should I just try it or break it into two rides, each 1:15? Or maybe try for 1:30 and do 1:00 later? |

Or maybe try for 1:30 and do 1:00 later? What I would do is a loop course around my house/car (if outside) so that I'm never more than 15 min straight ride to the end and then start with the intention of doing the whole ride, but stop if the back acts up. Of course, loops are boring and perhaps logistically difficult for you. Take this with a grain of salt though, I've never had back issues. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I overslept this morning! I cannot remember the last time I overslept my alarm. I wonder if it didn't actually go off (I use my fitbit as an alarm to not wake up my wife). Anyway, oversleeping by 45 minutes scarpered my planned 2:15 trainer ride and brick run for the morning. Went into work early and will leave early to get that workout in. Up side is that doing it in the afternoon means I *might* be able to do it outside. We are forecasted for 58F and windy. If that temp creeps up just a little and the wind dies down, I'm outside! |

I mean, it's going to snow here in Baltimore so Lord knows what you're going to get up there. I'd stick to the trainer, for both the logistical issues Gretchen mentioned as well as having the ability to break it up like you mentioned. You could probably do an hour, then some stretching, then an hour. At 2:30 you're probably all Z2/endurance, so you'll still get the same training stress even with a break. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, everyone. Happy Friday! Starting to build out my race schedule for the year...looking at two sprints and maybe a non-IM brand half-iron. All are within 45 minutes to an hour of here so it's easy logistically and I like the RD's races. It spans like a total of 22 weeks, so I need to be creative in my training plan so I don't get bored to tears. |

It would be great to meet up at one of the races near here! I am almost definitely doing the Baltimore Tri in October and I guess there is one in Perryville that my boyfriend wants to do, but I think that is an Olympic distance. Would love to add another sprint in! |

Or maybe try for 1:30 and do 1:00 later? Jenn - Absolutely. My suggestion would be to break it into two rides. You should ride your first leg until the very moment that you start to feel even the slightest twinge of pain in your back - and really even 10 minutes before if you can predict that. That way - you get as much beenfit from the LSD as possible. Then eat a good meal with plenty of cards and proteins and head out for the rest later in the day. Be aware of your position on the bike and do what you can to mitigate the sore ness - pick the flattest pot hole free road possible. Also think about taking some ibuprophin or maybe even an ice bath after the first ride to reduce inflammation. Good luck and great idea PS - Listen to Mike - He know's what he's talking about. The trainer is the way to go. You're muscles won't have to work as hard and you'll reduce the risk of pulling something. God, I love this group! Edited by Qua17 2016-04-08 10:09 AM |
