Subject: RE: Aaron Davidson's Group -- Closed.
Jennifer,

Congrats on a super race! 20 minutes faster is awesome!

And to all others - congrats on signing up for your big races - that's very cool to read about!

Hope everyone is doing well.

ray6foot7 - 2010-07-23 3:09 PM Warren - I saw your flat coke thread in Iron Distance talk.  It's great at the end of a looooong training session.  You can feel as soon as it hits your system.  It's like crack, amazing.  I've also heard that Chris Lieto uses Red Bull at the end of his long bike sessions as a pick-me-up to get him to the end.   Next time you are out on a 5-6 hour day or longer, try a little at the end.

Lots of Red Bull at Ironman races. Macca used to be sponsored by them and often talked about it, two cans during a race I believe.

You said maybe Aaron and Ray can give some IM training advise.  All I've got right now is to make sure your wives know what they have actually agreed to.  I don't think mine quite understood what 13-19 hours a week really meant.  It affects your social life, your household chore productivity, grocery bill................................

As to "how to train" - I guess I'll know which mistakes I made in 65 days.  If I lived in a perfect world I would have tried an IM my third year back instead of my first, but it just wasn't in the cards.

It truly is a major commitment in time and effort. No guarantee you will make it to the start line either. A friend, Bobby did not race today. His training has been awesome leading up, but he started having some pain when cycling. Got two bike fits, fitness was great, but the pain came back very intense to the point he can not ride.

itsallrelative_Maine - 2010-07-24 4:40 PM No official race results posted yet (it is a small, local race)...95 people participated (we had 65 last year), it was raining at the start and was just misting by the run. I finished! Woot! My time (according to my watch) was 1:41:38. Last year during my dry runs, I was finishing almost 20 minutes longer, so I'm very pleased with the result. The swim was a melee, the bike was slippery (due to the rain and some seriously rough roads), but the run felt good. It's really nice racing with a bunch of your neighbors.

Race Report here...thanks for all the positive thoughts and words - they really did help motivate me to push, push, push.

(and about the Significant Other maybe not being as aware of the overall impact of training time for IM on the household...I think that will be one of my biggest challenges...its a significant chunk of time.)

Awesome. No one here doubted you.

Awesome race Jennifer, and couldn't agree with Aaron more.  Now onto the next one!  Do you have anything before the Mainiac?  Bob's big race is next up I think.  You'll rock that one as well.

I agree with everyone about the commitment of long course training, especially IM, training.  Maybe Rene did it right - easier to ask forgiveness than permission! Smile

That's one of my reasons for waiting to attempt an IM.  We went over everything it takes - time, money, food, all the stuff, lack of chores (glad someone else thought of that!) and my wife wants to be sure I'm really committed to this tri thing before she signs up for it.  So after two years of halfs, if I'm still hanging tough, we'll be ready to rock.

But in the meantime it'll be great watching all you guys progress and we'll all have the CDA 2011 date circled.

Nasty about your friend Aaron.  That's gotta be one of the toughest things to deal with.  To get through all that training and then not be able to display it.  On a similar note, Leigh missed her last half, which she planned to try to qualify for nationals, because she got hit while biking by a kid texting in his car.  Luckily, nothing too serious, but enough to knock her out of racing for a while.

That's really my main goal this year - show up at the lake Sept 12 healthy and ready to go.  The rest will fall into place.

The next big race for me is an Oly on Labor Day weekend (also a smaller, local race - so I can practice the routes a lot before the actual race). As I was headed out for the run on Saturday - I got a little panicky thinking that the next time I did that I would have swam and biked twice as long and would need to run twice as far on Labor Day. Serious props to you all for the HIM and IM distance.

Yesterday, I spent the day on the beach with the kids - it was a beautiful afternoon...wish I had brought my wetsuit so I could have gotten a quick swim in - but my husband told me I needed to take a day completely off. He's right. Felt really good this morning for my run.

Bob - I am thinking positive thoughts for your race this weekend. Calgary is a beautiful place - enjoy the scenery! You will do great...I heard a quote (for a friend that competed in IMLP yesterday) that I thought was helpful, "Start at a pace you want to finish at". Best of luck. Enjoy your day. (We'll all be cheering for you in the States!). Enjoy the taper this week and safe travels.

Aaron - so sorry for your friend. I'm with Warren on this one - my main goal is to make it to the starting line healthy. It seems so easy to get derailed. In the long run, I am just so happy that my body can do all of the things I am asking it to do and that I get to spend so much time outside enjoying the scenery and the wildlife. I think I would be extremely frustrated with a serious injury, especially when I was gearing up for a specific race.

Have a great week all -

That's awesome, Rene.  Great job hitting the podium!

Well, IM Lake Placid 2011 is off the table... just checked the website and it sold out in less than an hour.  There's a local full ironman distance race called the Chesapeakman... maybe I'll look into that one for next year.

I always thought "podium spot" just meant top 3.  I have never seen an actual podium at any of my races.  That's pretty sweet.  Nice job Rene!

Awesome race Rene, and more than a little nutty riding home afterward.  Great picture, and it's cool to see some good sized guys up there.  It seems like the top 3 in the races I've done are all 140-150 pounders!

Some busy weeks coming up for the group - good luck this weekend Bob and taper well all.

This is good advice Ray and one of the primary reasons that doing an IM in early 2011 versus later is best for me.   My wife is taking graduate classes and she plans to graduate next year, so while she studies, I train and it keeps us both from feeling slighted on time that way.

My only hesitation at this point is the soreness in my hip.  I believe it has healed from the main hip flexor injury, meaning no more sharp pains.  However, I still feel soreness from sitting long periods, running and biking.  My swimming is unaffected.  It feels best in the morning after getting up.  I can bike ok and don't get much if any "pain", but feel a soreness afterwards.  I'm now wondering if my bike position is also part of it or if it just is taking a long time to heal, recover and restrengthen.  I've started some light core work and think that too needs to be strengthened. I'm kinda lost at what to do about it now and only hope that I will figure it out eventually like the handlebar palsy.  It just feels like I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what it is.  I still think I will be signing up for IMCDA.

I think I may have just bought a new tri bike.  A friend of mine, who is an avid triathlete and does a lot of work for charity, is selling a 2005 Quintana Roo Caliente bike with Ultegra and Dura Ace components.  It's at a bike shop right now getting a full tune-up.  I offered him $500 and he said "SOLD"!  The cool thing is the front wheel for it is being donated by Jeff Devlin, who is a two-time Kona 3rd place finisher (5 top 10's), 2x national triathlon champion and 3x national duathlon champion.  I may just hang that one on the wall.

I should be able to sell my 2002 Felt B2 for at least that much, so it'll be a free upgrade!
