Jason-we have some nice mild winters but the Summer (mid April to mid October) is pretty brutal. I don't ususally even wear my HR monitor on runs in the Summer as walking out to the driveway gets me in low Z3

Treadmill run done this morning. Swim at lunch. Picking up my team tri kit this evening. Looking forward to seeing how they turned out. Kit is suppose to be really nice (LG brand)...just like the kit Crowie races in. It will be fun racing with a team this year. Lots of really fast guys that are alot of fun to be around. Hopefully, it will keep me motivated through the long hot Summer. Membership on the team is year to year. To be included you have to earn points in specific races for overall or age group podiums. Unfortunately/Fortunately, the other guy on the team in the 50-54s is a beast....ran 38min 10k last weekend. Won AG at Augusta 70.3 last year.... Oh well, something to work toward.

Guys, I'm so dang nervous about the race this weekend. I cannot focus on anything! I've never been one to feel like I can't do something, and it's just eating away at me.

Is this your Xterra you were worried about? You got this. You just have to keep telling yourself that. Don't psych yourself out. Good luck!!!

Jason-I'm with you as far as the winter goes. I live in SC, and we have mild winters, but I'm so tired of being cold, or worried about the cold. I've always been a winter person, but now that I exercise 1-3 hours per day, I'd rather do it outside, which means that I'd prefer not to be shivering all the time!

Blanda-what are the race distances? I can understand nerves though; I have a sprint race this weekend, and am not worried about the distances at all, but I'm getting a little nervous/excited just thinking about it. It's nice to be reminded that all this training leads up to something! You'll do great, I'm sure!

Blanda-I still get nervous/anxious before all of my races. Not so much about whether I am ready but just the anticipation and the hope that I will race well. I bet you had the same nerves/butterflies before big soccer games. You have trained hard and prepared well. Be confident in your ability and have fun!

Randee-Happy Birthday! I vaguely remember 40. Enjoy your day....if you can find time this time of year. Good work on the treadmill. Sounds like you are gradually building your run back.

Randee: Happy birthday, young lady! Hope you're enjoying your day. The 5K sounds like it's gonna be very slow going for a bit. Hope you you fun though!

Jamie: It's a 1500m swim, 21 mile bike, and 5 mile run. I didn't make cut-off to run last year, so I'm worried about missing it again.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I'm going to do my very best. I'm going to have to get uncomfortable with the swimming and biking, which scares me a little. I know how far I can push myself running and playing soccer, but this other stuff is new.

OK. Done. Time to visualize and think positive thoughts. Thanks again.

Randee,

Happy Birthday. I had so much fun in my 30s and I am convinced that the 40s are only going to be better. So far so good (racing as a 42 year old this year).

Blanda,

You will do great. You have been over that course a bunch haven't you? Nerves are normal and good.

I stopped on the way home and bought a ticket for the $260 million lottery tomorrow. Work is once again getting in the way of my training. $260 million would free up a lot of time to goof around. I get 24 hours to dream about what I will do with the money......

Swam slightly better today. I feel like my reduced run mileage is starting to affect my run paces. I will have to talk to my coach about that. 20 minute test on the bike tomorrow is something I always dread. It will hurt no matter how you slice it.

Jason-they lottery dream is a fun one.  I would take lots of naps and get massages all the time. We don't even have a lottery in Alabama but I do pick up a ticket sometimes when I'm in Florida.

I know Blanda will be crushing the Xterra race this weeeknd. Anyone else have a race on their schedule?

Swim and bike  for me today.

Randy: I'm going to tackle the race, for sure!

Happy training, guys!

Best paced 20 minute TT on the bike yet. I felt like I was dying at the end (which you are supposed to) but I never fell apart which is an improvement over the last time and a victory considering how bad my legs have been feeling for every workout for the last few days. Power was 2% higher than the last test and I am satisfied.

Jason-- don't forget us when you win the lottery.  I could use a power tap disc wheel!

Had a decent run last night.  Today I am a bit under the weather so am taking the day off.  I'm so looking forward to this cold weather to end.

Randee - belated Happy Birthday! Enjoy your young days!

Blanda - You have put in the training, you know the course and you will do well! I am getting nervous before every race. I usually race with my buddy and my first tri this season two weeks ago was the first time that I raced without him which was really weird. In general sometimes I feel like just not even particpating. I am standing in transition with everything ready to go and I want to just go home. Once I am done with the race I can't wait for the next one. I am counting down the days until April 21st when I have my next tri.

Jimmy - I think sickness is going on everywhere. My wife just got over strep throat and now has the stomach bug I had on Monday. Don't want to talk about the kids .... :-(

My training is coming along nicely and I can't complain. I took my Newton's out for a nice 30 minute run yesterday and they felt really good. Its just different running with them and I like it.

Blanca, I believe your training will take you through beautifully! Maybe the nerves will work to your advantage.

I finished my last swim lesson tonight, they really helped my form and endurance.

I am starting a group training program this Sunday in preparation for an October century ride. They have SAG covered rides each week building up to the century. I have never done a group ride before so I am a bit nervous but I know it is a great supportive way to build those skills and gain a comfort level with it.

Mary,

Group rides are a lot of fun as long as you find a group that is willing to coach you along and help you with the group dynamics/rules of the road. I suspect that if this group is one that is training for a century that it will be very welcoming of new riders. The nice thing about riding with a group is that it makes the miles go by, sometimes without you even noticing it----unless of course someone is hammering it and you are trying to keep up--then you notice

15 days post blood donation and I am finally starting to feel back to my old self. Recovering my endurance and pace in the pool. This has been my experience in the past. Giving up 500 cc of oxygen carrying blood just really sets me back for a couple of weeks. At 63 kilos it is more than 10% of my blood volume and it makes a difference. It is a great thing to do but it is not without consequence Next time I do that it will be after IM Tahoe when I have no heavy work to do......

Jason-glad to are returning to normal....your normal is much faster than my normal.

Learned something this morning. I don't think I'm an early morning swimmer. I used to do it all the time but now swim almost exclusively at lunch. Don't know if it was the time or the fact that it was my 4th day of swimming in a row but every lap felt hard regardless of pace. I finished the swim but I kept telling myself if I could do one more interval I would bail on the workout and jsut swim the remainder nice and easy with my pull buoy. Finally got so close to the end that I just sucked it up and finished. More relief thatn satisfaction at the end of that one!

Last night I was lowering the seat on my bike and the seatpost clamp cracked. My bike has an integrated (one piece) seat post that had to be cut when the bike was fit for me. There is a sleeve with a clamp that fits on top of the seat tube. I was tightening the clamp, with a torque wrench as recommended, when the clamp cracked. The seat styed secure throughout my ride but I am scrambling to find a replacement with race season only a week away. Have emailed All3Sports in Atlanta where I bought the bike and also Blue the manufacturer.  Hope to get a replacement SOON!

Blanda-you're going to do great in the race this weekend!

Jason-glad you're feeling back to your old self.

Randy-that sucks about the seat post! I hope you can get it fixed soon.

I have my first tri of the year this weekend, a Sprint on Sunday. I'm pretty excited for it, but the weather is looking really weird right now. It's a 500m pool swim, 10 mile bike, and 5k. The only problem is that I've heard that the course is crit style, with no long straightaways and some sharp turns, and the weather looks rainy on race day. It had been looking cold, now it's at least looking warmer, but the water will be a concern. This is a new race for me, and definitely not an A race, but I'm really curious to see how I do. I'm definitely at a different level as far as conditioning goes, and this will be my first race on my tri-bike. However, I've had no taper, and I plan on working out Friday and Saturday leading into the race, so it won't be my 100% potential. I still think I'll do well compared to last year's results, though. To be honest, I sure as hell hope all this time training this year has paid off some!Wink I'll update late Sunday.

Jamie-hope the weather outlook gets better. Is it a pool swim or outdoors? This is early for an outdoor swim in SC. If it is outdoors I would get in the water if possible for some warming up to get used to the water temp.  You will see big improvement this year. Maybe not as much now, since you are training through the race, but definitely as the season goes on. Be careful on the bike if its wet. Push hard on the run and see what you have....I think you might be surprised by the run pace you are capable of with this year's training.

Bike update-talked with someone at ALL3SPORTS and they are confident they can get me a clamp as they still sell the frame w/clamp. Hoping to hear back within the next couple of hours with price etc...

Whoops. Sorry. Pictures are of team tri kit and team shirt. The gear is really nice. I've always worn Desoto tri gear but the team kit is LG and the material is really nice.

Jason-nice kit! It must be something to be racing as part of a team! It's a pool swim this weekend, which makes it, ironically, my least concern. I'm going to see what the course is like, but definitely back off is it seems wet; I've heard there are some tight turns. As far as the run goes, I am going to see what I can do, try to hold a good hard pace. I have a much better idea of what I can do than I did last year.

Things are a little slow here the last couple days. Everybody OK?

I have had a pretty light week overall. I don't mind. I think I needed it.

100 and 200 yard tt in the pool today. 1:20 and 2:49. I 'feel' like I should be able to eek out a little more speed. I may try to repeat them on Sunday at the high school pool. I always feel faster there.......

I had probably my best swim workout ever thing morning. 3,000m straight at 2m12s/100, which is really good for me. More importantly, I felt good and strong the whole way, enough to push the last 5 laps. Got a run in at school, and that felt good, too. So, I'm feeling good heading into the race this weekend. If only the weather looked better, isn't it supposed to be Spring? Yell
