Veteran 419 clayton | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Finished the month with a last minute sprint for the top - well metaphorically as I did a MAF run - and what an awesome run it was - I managed 35 mins with only one walk - woohoo, its working!! Looking back on the three runs this week I can see the HR and pace stabilize a little bit each time - feeling great and enthusiastic for next months challenge ... ! Veteran 419 clayton | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Hi All – I have compiled what I would like to be my race schedule this year, but would appreciate your feedback first. This will be my second year in Tri; prior to that I was running for 2 years (5K, 10K and 13.1), prior to that I was on the couch. NOTE all these races are B or C – I am not naïve enough to think this is easy and plan to use most of the races as training/stepping stones to the next distance level – ultimate goal of 70.3. Now I can already hear you say, not enough base; but I have already started to build my MAF/base now and will continue to do so throughout the year. Could I achieve this schedule without too much risk of injury/failure? 4/27 pool sprint (B Race)- 5wks recovery/training6/2 ows sprint or oly (C Race)- 7 wks recovery/training7/20 ows sprint (C Race)- 7 wks recovery/training9/7 oly (C Race)- 2 wks recover9/21 ows sprint (C Race) – swim is 1500m and uses same course as 70.3- 5wks recovery/training10/26 70.3 (B Race) Thanks for the comments! |

Why are you calling them recoveries? all you need after a sprint is to get going two days after... you can certainly do more Oly's... Also, at least one race should be an "A" race, meaning is the one where you intend to be "top shape" regardless of the distance of that race.Edited by ernestov 2013-01-31 1:48 PM |

Mark, I think this is a very doable race schedule. I am assuming that by "c" race you mean that you are doing the race more for the experience of going the distance or going over the course than to test your fitness/speed. If that is the case and you will not be racing hard the last two races before your HIM, then you should be fine. It's ambitious, but I'm a fan of that kind of racing attitude. I think you are giving yourself plenty of time to get your body recovered and ready for the nest challenge between most of your races. My first year of tri's I only gave myself 4 weeks between races. (2 sprints, oly then HIM) |

Mark, last year was my second year, so I'm no expert. I am also female and older. FWIW, I think the schedule looks doable. Just listen to your body and be sure to adjust if you need to. Last year I won free entry into a series of races. At the end of the season, I was tired of training and racing. I did 8 races; 4 sprints, 3 olys and 1 HIM. This year I am not planning to do as many tris. |

I'm not used to having to look so far down the list to find my name! Big congratulations to Mitch, Trevor and Derek. Said in my worst Austin Powers impersonation, "3 in a row, Baby!". Trevor - thanks for the constant motivation! This month was a grind. With a mid month trip where I forgot that I was no longer in college, to fighting a nasty head cold for the last 6 days, and nasty cold icy weather all month, I am glad to be done with january. The big positive is that I matched my overall volume for December, had my biggest running month ever, and my left leg continues to feel healthier and healthier. Bike volume was also steady. I'm anxious for February so that I can work on getting in a rhythmm of swim sessions, get more runs outside, and refine my cycling workouts so I can have regular intensity while not impacting my running. Weekly running volume will get up to the 50 range by the end of the month - exciting! On unrelated notes, I was playing on Strava last night and I found a couple run segments on my regular runs that I need to hit and become KOM - completely doable in my mind. I also found a bike segment just over a mile in length that I'll look forward to a warm day to try to KOM - should be doable. Wife amazed how competitive I am about someone running a segment faster than me (note: I am not truly fast), told her if the segment is essentially in my backyard I need to own it!

Veteran 487 Nova Scotia, Canada | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Pretty good month all around. Last week was spent on the road for work. Unfortunately that made it far to easy to get out of my swim and bike workouts. Also made it far to easy to stay up late "socializing". I think Mitch said it best "I'm not in college anymore." On the plus side my running is coming along great, my knees feel good, and I'm finally starting to see my average km times drop with my HR still under 150. Going to make a better effort to get in the pool at least 3 times a week, I'm seeing my times come down but I'd really like to get my 750 time under 12min and my 1500 time under 25min by the summer. Thanks to everyone for the extra motivation to get out of bed in the morning to get those workouts in, some mornings it wasn't so easy. Congrats to Mitch, great month! |

Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Missed my swim yesterday due . But today had a really good swim 3300 at 1:58 average pace including my rests. Did 16x100 at a pace between 1:35 and 1:40 starting every two minutes for the next set. I think by far this has been my best workout for swimming. I still felt strong at the end. So I must finally be doing something right with the swim. Followed up the swim about hour later with a 58 minute run that didn't go as well. I would have liked to waited a couple more hours but didn't have time. What a month of training it has been. Mitch Swim 3 - Bike 20 -Run 24 - Rest 6 - Total 47 Time 37:16:55 |

Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed So based upon what Ernesto has said I am going to get 165mm crank in a compact. The LBS is going to price match a place I found online that has it for 275. That is the best I can find out there for an Ultegra in that length. the LBS I am using also is going to be doing the fit and will resize my cables and cut my aero bars down to size after he gets me fit. He isn't really charging all that much either $80. I told him that is cheap and he said well they are just getting into it. I figure that while they are still getting into the whole fitting, it will still be helpful to me because they are willing to go the extra mile to make sure things are right for me.

Yes, the 'recovery/training' meant recover then restart training, and the use of 'C Race' was as Scott said, more for experience , which is why I didnt add any A's as I didnt want unecessary pressure - this year was meant to be a trial into upping my race distance and if I enjoyed it then 2014 would be the A Race season - although I am sure the HIM will quickly become my A Race!
