I'm starting to transition into specitivty training for Boston.

Got the details on what is on course. Powerbar (that makes that part easy) and of course, Gatorade (the yellow crap, boooooo.) I am not a fan of that flavor of Gatorade  I need to buy some and learn to like it as I won't be carrying liquid and I will need it (and water of course.)

I've also made a folder with so much info about the course elevation changes it will make your head spin.

This kind of information exists , specific to EVERY hill:

"Elevation (top): 51 meters (167 feet)
Elevation (bottom): 15 meters (49 feet)
Length: 951 meters (.59 miles)
Avg. Grade: 3.8%
Steepest Grade: 5.6%"

God bless the internets!

I've been studying (obsessing) about the elevation info for Oceanside too. I love having the info, though!

As for on course nutrition, Oceanside has Powerbar PERFORM. It doesn't state which flavor and I can't find the stuff at any local stores so I might have to order some off the interwebs so I can try it out. I've been trying the gels and chomps to see which flavors I can tolerate to supplement the waffles I'll be bringing along.

I was only able to find it by the case online...  they have one flavor on the bike, and the other on the run.  and i hated that stuff so much I started the bike with 2 full bottles of gatorade, and had 2 full bottles in my SN bag...  i have friends who like it so much they'd drink it for fun if it was more available though.  anyway, definitely get some to train with...

Asalzwed - 2013-02-19 2:29 PM How do you all handle massage in your training schedules? Do you do it after hard days? Or do you just fit it where you can?

The first step is to find a massage therapist that you like and trust.

Then I schedule them kind of on an as needed basis and let her know when I have an event coming up and let her influence the schedule.  I had one on the 7th so nine days before Myrtle Beach and I wanted one this week but my work schedule did not allow it so I have one schedule for next week (she has not evening availability this week and I can't take a long lunch this week).  I feel pretty good from the marathon so no worries.  With the Gator half coming up next month, I want to be sure that there is nothing lingering.

I figure that maintenance is less expensive (and more fun) than fixing me up in PT.

Salty, I'm sure that you kind of know when things aren't quite right and your stretching is just not quite cutting it.  It's at the moment that I would get on the phone to make an appointment.  Then, as the as an A race gets closer (Boston, Milwaukee), I'd let your trusted person influence the schedule.

Wait a minute... i'm totally out of the loop... Salt, what are you going to Milwaukee for and when??  I'll come cheer for you!

Ok, it just took me a 10 hour overnight shift to catch up (although, I did read that fallen snow article...holy crap...and it really did take me like, 3 interruped hours to get through it all... Thanks for sharing Salt.)

I'm about 30 min away from being done with a 9 day stretch, the last two of which have been the 8pm to 6am shift...  Did I tell you my biggest race of the winter is on Saturday?? Why do i ddo this to myself - I'm am more tired than a ....  i don't know... something that's always really tired. i'm too tired to think about it!

my birthday is april 21.

I laugh at salt and jo and yant.

There were neeked people on my screen! That helped wake me up!

I'm going to be away for a few days at the Birkiebeiner (GOOGLE EEEEETT!).  Cross your fingers for a killer PR...or at least not falling asleep at the 30K mark...  Good god, did I mention I'm tired?!  Anyway - try not to post 30 pages while I'm away.  I'll try to sneak in before I leave...  but really, hopefully i'll sleep for the next 24 hours   ahhhh.... bliss....

Yant - safe travels to NZ if i'm not back before you leave... i'm sure you'll visit us while there

everyone, happy end of the week and have a great weekend!

SWEET DREAMS

Oh, btw, I lister to the BEST PUBLIC RADIO STATION EVER: 89.3 the current. STREAM IT PEOPLE!  Right now it's playing Macklemore - Thrift shop!  RAD!!! http://www.thecurrent.org/listen

For Big Sur, last year, I scheduled massages every 2 weeks and swapped it for crosstraining.  It worked well.  It hurt like hell but I firmly believe that it made me a better runner.  Breaking up all those knots was definitely a workout.  There was no relaxation.  Drink lots of water after a sports massage.

Question! Registration for the Chicago marathon opens up tomorrow.  Do you think a two month ramp-up period is enough once I finish my summer tris (or can I still do tris while training for a mary)?  If I maintain 13-15 mile long runs through the summer after my April HM, will that work?

It just hit me that I might be able to make this work financially...

You asked for it

DO EEEEEEEEEET!

EXACTLY!!! DO EEEEEEEEET!!!

(And yes, I think you could jump into mary training for a couple months after your summer tri season ends and be just fine)

Did you get into Chicago?  I tried but the website was clogged up and wouldn't let me in and then they shut it down completely.

I didn't get in, but I'm monitoring the site to make sure I'll hit it as soon as the site goes live again.  It would be cool to see another Manatee there!  I should be there with a number of people from my running/tri club (if they can get registered themselves).

I ripped my pinkie toenail off. I actually run on those toes on the side, so half the bottom of the toe that I ambulate on is now a raw open wound. FUN!!!

I love taper!

Better now than later, and frankly than before too since I got pretty much all the necessary training in.

Unfortunately I'm leaving in 3 days and got places to go people to do and things to see ... (wait, what?) and I kinda need that toe to walk on. It's all swollen and gross, too!

Unfortunately, I only lose toenails in accidents, not for some cool reason like pounding from tons of running. Waiting for this round of ibuprofen to kick in ...

And I plan to bake some fresh cornbread, because I just feel like that would make everything better.
