Last night it was freezing cold, dark and raining - getting off the couch to the pool was a big ask. I told myself, go to the pool do 15mins, if it still feels crappy you can bail. So I went - it was packed. Eleven in my lane. Crazy butterfly and backstroke with that going on. How I didn't get knocked unconscious by one guy who is a middle of the lane swimmer (it's the OWS types, they don't have any sense of space) Anyway workout below. I love Johnny. Warm up with fins 200m Free 3x100m IM (25m fly, 25m back, 25m breast, 25m free) Main Set no Fins 6x200m (2 sets of) 6x100m (3 sets of) 6x50m (3 sets of ) BOOM! Holy schmoly!!! 5K????? The "Gone Nutty" varieties, which both contain a peanut butter filling, pack a sugary punch -- the peanut butter flavor is topped with a sprinkling of sugar crystals and the frosted chocolate flavor features a frosted chocolate crust. I will be all over the frosted PB!! Gone nutty? Sounds like people around here would enjoy them. You are what you eat, after all, so we're already there. |

I would worry about miles or time walking per se.jmhpsu93 - 2013-05-15 9:18 AM What I was thinking was one mile every morning next week, then two miles the week after, and then three the week after that. I should be good to go after that. Agree?cdban66 - 2013-05-15 9:04 AM ponderingfox - 2013-05-15 6:15 AM Went for a walk this morning and my knee didnt bother me at all. If this continues through the week, I'll begin running again on Sunday. Great to hear! Slow and steady gets you prepared to prepare. Keep after it. And make sure to ease back into it for sure...easy mile here, easy mile there. Don't run until it hurts. rut roh. that all sounds ... uh ... wise. Since they haven't been able to do anything, the PT has been very non-specific, and is only quad-strengthening exercises to stabilize the patella. It doesn't seem very compelling to me. They taped my knee for the first week, and took the tape off after I didn't feel it was doing anything. We'll see what they do/say tomorrow. Soooo, what was the diagnosis? Regardless, I would be very consistent with that quad strengthening and then, the same advice I gave above. I'm not thinking the walking is really going to do anything for you right now while you are trying to let it heal (from whatever it is.) I think, as Ben said, adding the walking while you are working on building your base mileage is a great idea. The walking is how I came back from my knee injury (still a mystery even after surgery where we expected to find a torn meniscus and voila! it's perfectly fine). Lots of incline walking (I do 12%) gets your heart rate up, strengthens your glutes and hamstrings (and lower back) and is easy on your knees. I think there are a few knee conditions that are contraindicated to this sort of thing but most are fine. It almost builds a running base without actually running (and you'll be a maniac on the hills afterward!). The quad strengthening stuff is really important, too, but make sure you keep balance with your hammies and glutes. And don't forget your core!! The whole kit and kaboodle is intertwined. |

I think, as Ben said, adding the walking while you are working on building your base mileage is a great idea. There is no diagnosis. That 'do' should be 'diagnose', I guess. I would say that the walking is giving me a temperature of where my knee is actually at. I have no idea what was injured, but my bet was that it was something that would take about six weeks to heal, like if I had sprained an ankle. The walking is how I tell how far along I am. If it's getting to the point of not hurting, then that means I can start doing things a little more strenuously. I can do the walk/run thing. I don't want to come back too quickly (I do have to run a 5k come June 2 in a sprint), as I know what that's like with other injuries. But hey, if I run an easy 5k (24 min), I think I can still break an hour on this course. |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes) Marathon plan training question. I really want to use Hal Higdon's Intermediate 1---if I find it too much I would drop to Novice 2 without a problem--My issue stems from calculating the actual start date right. All his plans put the long run on Sunday, but the target race is for a Saturday. When I try to count back weeks I get my weeks/ days messed up from readjusting the long run to Saturday and tempo runs to Friday.(thus giving me Sunday to cross train) The other thought is using the 20 week marathon plan here (silver plan). I used the silver plan for the fall half marathon and had pretty good results in November. I just think I will be happier using the Higdon plan overall..... Sooooo, race day is November 16 and the Higdon plan is 18 weeks so it would start July 14 or there about. The silver plan here is 20 weeks and would have to start last week of June.(and if I add it to my log would come pre calculated for days) Help me get this training plan straight---please! |

*Kate answered it by luring me in with beer and I started to register but came to my senses and though I should clear it with someone. Any other distance and I'd pull the trigger but I massively respect the M Yeah, you're right. I vaguely remember this now. Hate to say it, but ... natch. It's not so much that you need a training break sometime; it's that you don't need to do a marathon to gauge where you're at or for training purposes nor would you be in a fantastic position to train for it as an A race. WHAT!??! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! This is the only time I get a manatee visit!!!! I will now stomp my foot and pout. Or...Salty can just visit for the a beer tour. ...and happy burfday Yanti. |

I assure you that a one day scheduling shift will make exactly ZERO difference in your training. It also really doesn't matter what day you start. I'd go with Higdon over the BT plan. What really counts is just DOING the runs, day in, day out. You're incredibly consistent and will be very successful. |

Mom had a relapse so a night on her couch and then a night on my couch makes mememanateeme very tired and unwilling to work out because memesleepyheadme just wants to snooze. So I got her squared away before I leave for a conference in St. Louis where I fully plan to do my workouts like a good girl. Then I leave for vacation to Hells Canyon where I will be out of commission for almost 2 weeks. So if you don't hear from me rest assured I will be starting my first of many 17 oz Gin and Tonics by 10 am mountain time daily, taking photos of the Snake River Canyon, hiking, hanging with my peeps, celebrating a 50 year birthday (not mine) in Hell, thinking up a lot of Hell puns and generally goofing off and not thinking about work or work outs. Please don't judge me.Might squeeze in a run today.I'm so inspired by all of you. Wow. 11 in a lane. Still can't wrap my mind around that. I guess its good race training huh? |

Judi, the only plan I've ever used was to get me to start the WDW HM a couple years ago. HH novice was the plan, it was my first. So, I have a soft spot in my heart for Mr. Higdon. Kirsten did all the work you need on the plan, how cool is she? Now, you just have to go out there and execute. If I'm not mistaken, you've done this sort of thing before. And looking at your logs reveals a fairly consistent individual. So, I am looking forward to November 16th, because you will rock that race! |

I heard it on a tv show a few days ago so i thought I'd try it. The first night I slept well but figured it could be concidence. I've been eating about a Tbs of honey before bed for about a week now and I sleep better! Granted this is N=1 but I think it's better than the melatonin supplements. I'm in a "meeting" all day today so I'll be keeping up with the Manatee chatter via email. Have a great day all! |
