Hey Everyone! Happy Monday!!!

Well, I did it! I went out and dropped the largest amount of coin I have ever dropped on a non car/house purchase.  I got the Cervelo P2C (Ultegra version).

Using the review Lisa sent me and other research, I had pretty much made up my mind going into Saturday but I still was going to test-ride the Orbea Ora.  It was really sweet, smoothe, everything you could ask for.  But it was also the DA version and there is a big step-down from the Dura Ace to the Ultegra on all components on the Orbea.  So I decided to go with the P2C.

Saturday night, after I got the kids to sleep, I said to my wife "If I don't go ride, I'm going to be up all night like a kid on Christmas Eve..." so I went out and did 5.8 miles at 21.35mph.  I wasn't even crunching too bad.  I was just enjoying the ride.  I love having accelleration as opposed to my road bike where I feel like I'm on a diesel truck.

I'll post some sexy bike pics sometime this week.  Basically, if you type in P2C and then just imagine red bar tape and a seat-mounted bottle-rack, you've got it.

Congrats.  I am going to be looking for a bike soon.  The bike I am using is borrowed from a buddy that is moving to the UK for a couple of years and is taking his bike.

This link http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/reviews/2500wars.shtml and how good of a fit it was were the key drivers to getting this bike.  The article kinda says it all.

I've got 3 guys who are definitely interested in starting triathlons but they keep coming up with reasons not to.  One is going to ride the bike part of a relay, one is going to watch the Loggerhead Tri (Aug 9th), and one may watch the Loggerhead.  Any ideas on how to push them off the cliff?  They almost all say "I would, but I couldn't make it through the race right now.  I think I need a year..."  Trust me when I tell you, these guys don't need a year to get ready.  Two are former Air Force Officers who are decent athletes and one is a fresh college grad who can smoke people at a 24mph bike pace for about 20 miles.

I was thinking about trying to offer to start a training group at some point and pick the Feb 10th season opener as the target for them.  Any thoughts?

Tell 'em there are a bunch of hot tri chicks at races?? j/k

I do think offering to start a training group would be a good idea if they're into it.   It's nice to have other people to train with and hold you accountable for workouts.  Do they know how to swim?

Matt, I think a training group sounds great!!!  Go for it, for sure, then it would be more fun for you too.  Accountability always helps in consistency .  And congrats on the P3C, that's a sweet bike...awesome!

Also, this weekend I did my first Olympic ever!!!  I had a great time, hit all my goals pretty close, and am happy with what i managed to do, considering my training.  it was a very well run race, the tragedy notwithstanding   (a man died during the swim, but i didn't know about it until this morning).   it's very sad, i can't stop thinking about it.

but i just put up my race report, which took me forever to write.  phew!  now i can do something else.

i hope you all had great weekends!

Maybe it's because there are more people getting into triathlons than ever before but there do seem to be several stories of people dying during the swim.  My race a few weeks ago, someone died during the swim, the NY Times had a thing about the NYC triathlon and how two people died (one in the swim, one on the run), and how there have been at least 8 fatalities in tris this year.

Still, the statistics show you're more likely to get killed or severely injured in a bike accident training than swimming.

Great job on the Oly.  Any key lessons learned?

I did my longest ride in a long time (9years) this morning.  I rode out to the north end of Jupiter Island (where Tiger Woods' beach home is and Greg Norman lives) with 3 other people and kept needing to slow down because I was blowing them away.  Then I turned south to come back and the wind and the lack of hydrating and nutrition hit me.  I need to get better at the during workout nutrition.  I guess I need a bento box.  It's tough to find stuff and eat/drink on the road like that.  I think for the sprint a week from saturday, I may just go with one aero bottle for the 13-mile bike and then use the fuel belt for the run.  Getting in the aero position is actually pretty comfortable on my new bike.  But when the abs get tired (20+mile mark this morning) it's tougher to stay down.  Gotta ride home this evening.  hope the t-storms stay away...

Congrats on the new bike!  You're gonna love it!!!  It's hard to find a bunch of people to train with that ride at the same pace.  I end up training by myself most of the time when it comes to cycling.  Glad to hear you are so comfortable in aero!  That's important!  As for nutrition during your sprint.....I had one bottle on my bike.  I was only out there for 35ish minutes!  I left a bottle at T2 so I take a swig after the bike ride and then I just grabbed what I needed from the aid stations.  Don't bother with the fuel belt for your run if there is a well placed aid station.

I think I'm gonna do another race this weekend.  It's a 7 mile, hilly run.  I may not actually "race" it though.  Depends on who shows up!

Great job on the Oly. Any key lessons learned?

I learned that I need to run more.  A lot more!  And that I am very bad when it's hot.  I am much better in cooler weather.  And that I like flat courses.

Finally, I learned that it is VERY VERY VERY important for me to eat substantial amounts of food not long after i finish a long race like this.

I guess I need a bento box. It's tough to find stuff and eat/drink on the road like that. I think for the sprint a week from saturday, I may just go with one aero bottle for the 13-mile bike and then use the fuel belt for the run.

I love my bento box, it makes grabbing gels so easy!

I'm with owl_girl, there's no need for a fuel belt in a sprint as long as you drink enough on the bike.  and for the bike a single bottle should be more than enough fluid.  enjoy the new ride!

Yeah.  They're more like really, really hard training days!  The running club I belong to has a fun race series.  They have at least one race per month all year.  If you want to be ranked within your age group, you need to run in at least six of the races.  There are awards given out every January.  Currently, I'm ranked 2nd in my age group.  If some of the faster girls in my age group show up this weekend, then I'll race.  If the slow ones show up, I'll just run.

Oh yeah, to reply to Traci's comment about checking out hot chicks, there's an article about that in this month's triathlete magazine.

That's one of the things I like about being in the clydes group.  I get to pass the ladies group on the bike.  That's where you see the friendly ladies, not in the age groupers who are passing you.

That angle though is something to keep someone interested in triathlon, not get them into it in the first place because they wouldn't understand until they got out there.  ya know?

The good thing about the Fuel Belt is that I can bring cold water (I usually freeze the bottles the night before and then break them out at the start so they're melted as I start running) whereas the aid stations always have air temp water.  That sucks.  I usually only bring two bottles on the belt and drink them at mile 1 and 2.  I may not need to soon.  I guess I'll try without at my next brick (Saturday).

Racing more like Tracy would be nice but it gets expensive doncha think?

Sprints around here are running as high as $90 these days. I paid $85 once for a sprint-distance duathlon (2/12/2). They did give us a hot breakfast afterwards, though .

Hey everyone.  Training is going good for me this week.  Melissa is still moving things out of the apartment so things are a bit awkward at home.

I have been trying to focus on the biking this week since next week is the big bike event.  I have also been doing a bunch of cross training in the form of Rock Climbing and strength work.  If all goes as planned, I will probably have around 14 hours of working out done this week, but only about 7 of them will be tri sports.

I'm really starting to get pumped up about the bike tour next week.  It may not exactly be a race, but I know that getting the miles in will be a whole lot of fun (and painful).

Hope everyone has a great week!

NICE!!   I think ours are $1, but they have them mid-week at 6:30 PM.  I think I'm going to start making it a priority to go and race though at least once every few weeks.  I can never seem to get my butt moving that fast during my training runs.  When I'm racing, it helps me kick it up a notch.

Exactly!  Speedwork can hurt.  It's nice to see that everyone is hurting and that I'm not alone.  No whining alowed!  There's nothing like a little friendly competition between friends!  The faster guys usually run back on the course when they finish and encourage the slower ones.  It's a fun time.
