WHATEVER!!!!

Suzy, I have a Blue Seventy Reaction (i think that's what it's called).  I got it for my first tri and wasn't sure how much I was going to like tri-ing.  In retrospect, I wish I had gone with their higher end model like the helix because it has much better flexibility in the shoulders.  The blue seventy fit was better than all of the others I tried...the others were all bunchy in the torso no matter what...I had tried desoto and zoot.

Havin'Fun - 2009-05-14 1:09 PM I'm right there with you Janet.  Why does the bike leg have to be so long?

Anyway, why is the bike leg so long?

Different strokes for different folks.  I wonder why the heck the swim is so long! I want an IM with a sprint length swim!

Can we talk wetsuits?  what do you have? why do you like it? are the bells and whistles worth it?

My tri group gets a great discount on Blue Seventy.  Just looked at both the Syngergie and Helix.  The Helix is $119 more expensive, but has greater stretch in the shoulders and zips down versus up which I kind of like, etc .  I can't try on either because there are no XS, but I can return it if it doesn't work.  Any thoughts?

Suzy
I had to laugh 'cause I'm silly..Wouldn't it be funny if they came with whistles?
Anyway, in all seriousness would an XS small even fit you? Reason i ask, is i'm 6 foot 200lbs and I just bought my 1st one and I'm a medium.  I guess you''d get the XS then they would hem it up or something?

Suzy, one of the brands, I'm sorry I don't remember which one. makes a 2 piece wet suit. This obviously allows for greater variety in custom fitting the top and bottom.  Maybe that would be an option for you if size and fit become an issue.  Who makes these......anyone?

Kim,  you are too funny.  I love the smart a*s come back. Perfect timing!

Anyone have socks they just love?  I recently got a pair of Asics Kinsei Socks which I only ordered because I needed to meet the free shipping amount on a purchase, and I just LOVE them.  They are anatomically corrected with a L and R side and they are just so comfy!  I am trying to find them cheaper than the 15.99 listed price because that just seems like an incredible price to pay for socks.  otoh, i haven't gotten any blisters on my long runs with them and they go onto a wet foot easily!  yes, I tried this out already   maybe they are worth the $16 bucks.

well, anyone have favorite places to buy socks for less?

balaga by far.  i wear the hidden comfort model.  if you put socks on in transition these are very easy to get on...no need to roll em'  $8-10 a pair.  if you have a marathon or big race coming up in your neck of the woods...I think July is the SF marathon right?... you can usually get 3 pairs for 2 and other great deals.

Wetsuit - QR UltraJohn.  I like it, feels good in the pool, but have never worn it in a race.......never been legal.

Socks - Balga - Hidden Comfort.  They are a bit thick, but very comfortable.  love 'em.

Training plan question ... do you guys & gals follow a training plan that is training time based or mileage based?

In the past I have used mileage based training plans.
However, I've read about the time based plan theory, and used that to train for my first marathon earlier this year.
My IM training plan uses mileage (yds) and time for the swim, but only time on the bike and run.  My concern is it is the longest bike plan on BT has a max of 6h 45m on the bike.  Don't get me wrong, that is a lot of biking (especially for me), but being slow on the bike I am not sure it will get me the mileage that I need for the bike.  I hope I am making sense  Smile

TIME TIME TIME!!!  You want to train the mind and muscle's about TIME TIME TIME!!

If you are really concerned about miles I am sure there is an organized century ride you can do in let's say September in which most courses are open for 8 hours or so.... My favorite is when you do these rides then go for a 15-20 minute run!  The people riding the course with you look at you like a FREAK of nature!! It is great....

But you really want to focus on BUTT IN SADDLE TIME!! NOT DISTANCE!

LOL with all my gear socks are one thing that I don't seem to care about.  I run in whatever I can find in the house.  Every so often when I can't find 2 that match I roll out with 2 different ones.

Do socks really make that much of a difference for you?

BTW, I will get the teams set up tonight, just going to pick names out of a hat or something similar.

Suzy I am really leaning towards the Desoto but probably not until next year, I only have 1 wetsuit legal OWS this year that I know of, rest are going to be too warm for the suit so didn't see the need to pay $400 bucks right away for a new one.

The one I have now is an Ironman brand, don't even remember which one, bought it for 90 bucks on ST last year.

After talking to my wife, I registered for the NYC triathlon.  This past week my wife has been pushing me to sign-up and has been very supportive in everything.  She believes that even though in face the tri is expensive ($225 registration plus $300 charity donation/store credit) that in reality it's not more than we would have spent if I did another one someplace else due to travel costs/hotel.  She also thinks that I won't have time next year to until I pretty much retire to train and condition my body for the next distance..

I think this should be a good first olympic for me because supposedly the swim can be very easy if you're in the earlier starts/waves due to the current and the swim is a straight line (hopefully there will be no jellyfish like last yr, it was weird the whole NE area had jellyfish last yr).  All in all I just have to get my butt in gear and train harder at everything..  BTW I ended-up using the $300 store credit/charity donation to pre-order the Garmin 310xt.  My wife told me she already pre-ordered one for me for father's day but now we're just canceling her order and using the store credit so I guess I we saved $300??  Not really...  So now I need to look at the bridge training plans (sprint to olympic) on BT..  Does anyone have any recommendations?

Stan- wtg on signing up!  How exciting for you!  Last year I used the bronze 16 week olympic 3x/wk balanced plan for my first oly.  It was just enough for me.  If I could have swam in a straight line, I actually would have said I did great!

I just looked at the 8 week beginner oly plan for silver members and it looks pretty comparable in volume.  When is the NYC tri again?  You are probably doing about that amount of training right now maybe except for the bike.

Tony, I used to not care much about socks until I developed those odd blisters (on long runs of 10+ miles) near the tongue of my shoe.  Odd, that I was using anti blister socks (made by Wright), at the time.  but they were maybe getting waaaayyy too old.  But thanks everyone for the feedback, I will look into the balaga. The nike dry fit are a little thin for me.

Best of luck to you and your training Stanley. Way to step up to the challenge. I'm sure you'll do great.  BT does have some Sprint to Oly bridge plans available. Don't have any feedback though - sorry . Don't worry too much about the swim, it is the shortest part and a good warm up. As long as you are comfortable and don't burn too much energy in the swim you should be fine.  As we were saying earlier in the thread the bike is always the longest section so don't burn yourself out there. Save some for the run.  High cadance spin, at least at the end, will help work out the kinks on the brick.  That's my back of the pack finisher two cents anyway.

All this info about the socks is interesting.  Like Tony, I never really thought about it. But I do get blisters so maybe I should.  Guess I'll be sock shopping soon.  (say that three times fast)

Tony

Not to complicate things or anything on this virtual race, but my thought to make it a little more fair:  I mean if there were a team that just so happened to have all the weaker players, there would be very little motivation there, so I have 2 thoughts on picking the teams.

1.  You pick the teams and pair everyone up as close as you can with abilities.  We trust you ( I think)

2.  The 3 "fastest" triathlets hold a draft

I think either of these would secure more equal teams than just drawing them out of a hat.  I mean imagine Steve, You, and I on a team...we would KILL everyone else...  I am just KIDDING about the I part of that.

I haven't had a chance to figure out how many per team, maybe we just do 2-3 teams, that should even out the fast and almost as fast on the teams.  There are also some of us that are much faster than others in certain aspects so that should even everything out.

Ok, I gave everyone numbers and told my wife to call out 4 numbers at a time to me.

If I accidentally left you off I apologize, I went back and think I got everyone that said they wanted to race.  We have one team randomly with 5 people and the rest with 4, but we are averaging out times so it all should work out.

Team 1Team 2Team 3Team 4
TonySteveRobTracy
TrevorBarryHollySuzy
StanLindaKimJeremy
MattJanetReubenAndy
John

So between Monday the 18th of May until Sunday May 31st Each person needs to do:
400yard swim (we will adjust for those that swim in meter pools)
12 mile ride
5k

Post your results for the day you do it and we will average out the times.

Remember this is for fun and trash talking makes challenges even more fun : )

If there is anyone I missed please let me know and I will put you on a team, or if I added you and you didn't want to do it let me know and I will take you off.

Stanley--way to go on taking the plunge.  I am sure you will do great!  Your wife sounds like a peach.

Tony--good luck on forming those teams.  Honestly, this is totally for fun so I don't care what the teams look like.  WHile it would be nice not to have all the HIM and IMs together, do what you can!

Barry--you aren't competitive at all, right?

Thanks for all of the great advice on the wetsuit purchase. Tracy--I like the Orca features.   In my OWS class today, a woman 5'4" and about 40lbs heavier was wearing the XS Helix. Kind of confused on the whole sizing thing.  I might see if there are any XXS out there.

PS. OWS class was A-Ok.  The water was only 50F and my feet were numb at the end of an hour, but the newbies swam around a few buoys and are starting to learn how to site. There were about 10IMs swimming around us which was a little unnerving.  I got my first shoulder kick and swam over someone so it was the perfect night!
