Hey Belted, welcome to the forum! I am doing the Derby half this weekend (I wanted to do the full marathon, but the coach put the nix on that because I take too long to recover) and I can't wait to run through Churchhill Downs! It has been raining non-stop for the past week in Indy, but the weather looks like it will be nice on Saturday.

I started tri a couple years ago and was also a complete newbie to two of the three sports, but mine were biking and running. I must say, if you are a marathoner already you have the hard part down. Also being a local to Louisville you will be adjusted to the heat and humidity on race day, which is the other major obstacle. As for the "newbie" lack of experience, that can be managed by paying attention to forums like this one and doing tris (of any distance, really). You have all the tools, bottom line: train with confidence my friend, you will do this!

Thx Sam, coach re-adjusted my HR Zones. Last time I tested it was on my Madone(rd bike) and the gearing is much different. The Argon just flys with a lower HR.

Belted and Tulkas:

I too am running the Derby-half this weekend.  I am a little sorry to see that Iroquois Park was removed from the mini (growing up a south-end boy, I've ran that park a thousand times).  On the brightside though, I hope to PR the new pancake flat half-marathon course.  Good luck and be sure to bring your water wings; I think the great lawn is under water!  Cheers.

I bought some pre made powerbar ironman perform at GNC to see how I would react to it. I have used it on bike and run workouts and am happy to report I have had no GI issues using this stuff. It tastes pretty bad, but I can get past that.

I am running a half as well this weekend!  Just a little further North than the Derby, I'm running in my hometown Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon/Half Marathon on Sunday.  I, too, am looking to PR ~ would like to break the 2 hour mark (PR = 2:00:22).  My husband, also a duathlete (and much faster than me...lol), is looking to PR the Marathon and break 3 hours (PR = 3:08).

Good Luck to all!!

Thanks!!  I will keep my fingers crossed for everyone that we have decent weather, ie. NO RAIN!  It has rained non-stop around here for weeks, I'm about ready to build an Ark....lol, some of the parking areas could be flooded out, but I don't think the course will be affected.

Good Luck everyone racing this weekend!!  My first Half is next weekend, so I'm going easy this weekend.

I, too, have been using the Ironman Perform drink (and Jillian, I agree.....it doesn't taste very good).  I know this is kind of late notice but it is the sports drink of the month at REI and is only about $1 dollar per bottle.  Not sure when that will change but Sunday is May 1st, so the sale may end Saturday. (I think you can also order it online).

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!  I'm jealous!  I'm not racing again until the Macon Half in June.

I too bought some Ironman Perform recently to try it out but I bought the powder.  I've been using it while I run.  So far so good.

It was on clearance (.54 a bottle) at the GNC here in Madison about two months ago so I cleaned them out. I can tolerate the Lemon Lime (Bike course flavor) but for some reason if I use the Orange Mango (run course flavor), I throw up. I have been out on a couple runs where I find myself doubled over in someones yard. I switched my running mix back to infinit and it seems to have solved the issue. This weekend I am going to test a long ride using perform followed by run using infinit to see how that works.

One word of advice. The powerbar drink stains waterbottels and makes them look really dirty.

I too have tried the Perform drinks.  They seem OK to me so far.  JHouse, where did you get that info that the lemon/lime is on the bike course and the orange mango is on the run course?  That helps out a lot knowing what I need to train with.  Any idea what flavor gels will be available on the course?

Thanks,

Nathan

Just wanted to tell everyone good luck on their upcoming races. Also, to those with injuries I hope that they will heal quickly so you can perform at your peak come the big race. I know how frustrating an injury can be. I crashed my bike last year and had to DNS my half iron. I think it affected my more mentally than it did physically.

I am currently using Ironman Perform as well. I have a weak stomach and have had no problems on my runs and rides.

Good luck to everyone this weekend!

That is what it was at Ironman Wisconsin last year. I have a friend that finished later and she said that they ran out of the Orange Mango later in the day and started handing out Mixed berry at about mile 18 of the run.

Every Ironman that I have done Ironman Lou 2007, Ironman Wisconsin 2008 & 2009 was Gatorade Lemon lime on the bike and Orange on the run. IM WI 2010 was the different brand but same.

Okay, so Ironman perform is what's on the course...I will have to train with some.  My stomach is usually okay with most things.  If anyone does have the info on the gels on the run course that would be great.

Good luck to all those racing this weekend.

Next race for me is a 50k in May, if all goes well. It's 10 minutes from my house so I HAD to sign up :-)

The gels are usually a mix for flavors. Vanilla, Latte and I think there was chocolates at IM Wisconsin last year.  The thought of those just made my stomach turn.

At Wisconsin last year all I wanted was pink Perform on the run. They had it at the first aid stations but I couldn't find it on the 2nd half of the run at all. I kept asking "PINK? PINK?!" as I approached the aid stations LOL

First race of the season today: Tri the Parks, John Tanner Sprint.
Tm: 1:16:37 = 10th/31 in a "stacked" AG. Only 6mins between the top 10 guys.
OK swim, avg 20.7mph on the bike (13.6 miles). 22:57 on the run, avg 7:38 min miles, not great for a sprint.
Legs just didnt have that "5th" gear today. Lack of "speed" training showed today in a painful way.
Training LONG sucks for Sprint races!!
Eye on the Big Prize, IMLOU!!

Cube-Way to knock it down. Will you have a race report in the BT race report format?

Confession: I have my first event for 2011 tomorrow. It's a 5k/30k/5k duathlon. I registered before my Achilles issue. It will be the first time I've attempt to run in a week. It's a "C-Race" at best. It was a "B-Race," but it got demoted. Here are a couple examples regarding the extent to which I am not taking it seriously: I rode a windy 56 miles today (Ave. 19.4-ish). I stopped a few times to adjust my aerobars...still trying to get dialed in. Furthermore, I'm going to ride the 8 miles to and from the event. My goal at this point is to 'jog' the first 5k, then just see how I feel on the ride with no plan of pushing the pace, and only start the second 5k if the first 5k goes well. If the first 5k doesn't go well, I'll drop out after the bike.
