Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ernestov - 2012-05-25 8:58 AM By the way, how does the group feel about a June edition of the challenge? I know we always let a month in between, but most are gearing up for the season or already in it and the folks on the other hemisphere need the frequency to stay fast... Periodization is key to a good season so I'm counting myself in, anybody else? I am up for a June challenge, especially since I will get to start swimming regularly again, starting this weekend. My kids are two weeks ahead of me I just can't do 45 deg water |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll do it again, however there's little point since after Alcatraz on the 10th we're spending 10 days on the road with the kids visiting Yosemite and Sequoia national parks, so my training during that time will be at a bare minimum, at best I'll get a run in each day, but won't even have my bike with me and no access to a pool or body of water to train in. That's also my 2 week down time before my actual plan for AZ starts. Its cool that you are doing Acatraz. That is on the list of events I need to convince my wife it would be a good idea for me to do. Edited by JBacarella 2012-05-25 10:02 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Attempt number 2 today at an MAF run, here the link if anyone wants to let me know how I did: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/181855370 My magic number I believe is 143. The book is scheduled for delivery tomorrow, I'm looking forward to reading it and learning more about this method.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch, way to go with the challenge, keep it up! Andy, awesome that you are doing Escape from Alcatraz, a good friend from Guatemala is also doing it and its now also on my list! Jackie, any news on your new Garmin 910XT? I'm now back in Guatemala (back to reality) and got my first recovery workout today, an easy 45 min on the bike. Fortunately I'm feeling well and taking it easy with the workouts for the next couple of weeks. I'm also in for a June challenge, but I need to make-up a lot of time at home with the family after the time I put in for IMTX. Hope everyone has a great Memorial day long weekend! - Mitch: S 6 / B 15 / R 16 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 37 ; 24:57'47" |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samyg - 2012-05-25 10:27 AM Today 1,600 swimming. Reverse pyramid (600,400,300,200,100). Second good swim in a row, finding my rhythm and breathing pattern, getting that glide feeling. Keeping up the same (slow) speed (2:05-2:10 / 100) throughout the swim but finishing fresher. I believe both of my races were affected by me being too tired after the swim, so "easy" swimming is my first goal. Great to hear that you are happy with your swimming. Don't worry too much about your speed until you really have the technique down, then the speed will come naturally. Love this kind of workout in the pool. When I swam competitively and coached we did these a lot at varying distances and intervals. Just so you have the terminology correct, what you did was a ladder set. A pyramid would involve ascending and descending distances. Keep it up!
Had an absolutely horrible run last night. Bad asthma attack came out of nowhere just over half way into an out and back run. Had to walk almost three miles to get my breathing back under control. Haven't had an attack like that in over two years, so needless to say I wasn't carrying my rescue inhaler. Lesson learned. On the positive side though, great swim today. 4000 meters in just over an hour. - Mitch: S 6 / B 15 / R 16 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 37 ; 24:57'47" |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today is a rest day. I did have a short swim that doesn't count 400 yards for 10 minutes. Lake Huron is still really cold, so I could only tolerate 10 minutes. I don't know how my kids do it. Tried out the new wetsuit Xterra Vortex. Ernesto, great call! I couldn't believe how much easier swimming was. Prior wetsuit is a shorty that I bought when I was 30 pounds heavier. It was so big on me that it looked like the rapper vesion. - Mitch: S 6 / B 15 / R 16 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 37 ; 24:57'47"

Master![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ernestov - 2012-05-25 3:28 PM Uh-oh! Gabe's back... Mitch and Andy watch it, hahaha! Yep...missed my window this morning to workout - now "stuck" getting the decks cleaned, lawn tidied up, drinks bought, etc. for a BBQ tomorrow. May have to try to triple up tomorrow morning... |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First OWS of the year today, it was excellent! Just like riding a bike, the hardest part about it was putting my wetsuit on again. Water was quite cold, maybe close to 60 degrees (F). I used a neoprene swim cap for the first time with a regular bright orange cap over it (good visibility) and I think it really helped with keeping me from feeling cold. I seriously never felt cold or chilled at all. I walked in, sank down and just started swimming, which is what I need to practice because jumping off the ship at Alcatraz there's no "getting used to it", you better go or you'll get jumped on!

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I also got a 43 min, 2k swim at lunch! BTW, not sure if I shared this on my race summary, but with 1 of 3 laps of the run still to go, I did not want to know anything about Ironmans again! However once I crossed the finish line along with the thrill that comes with it, then it became evident that we were hooked and that the only way to deal with the sense of emptiness that comes afterwards, was to start planning for the next one. So we talked with Ernesto about doing IM Cozumel at the end of 2013 and I already got family clearance for that one. So if anyone else wants to pencil that one in, that will be a lot of fun! And then we are also pending to see if they are going to offer IM Texas, The Woodlands again in 2013, which we might do again. It was such a great course and experience, that is worth considering as a repeat IM (I still don't have clearance for that one, but my wife loved The Woodlands, so that should help

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Been MIA for a couple of days due to work. Tues - 54' swim Weds - Rest Thurs - 2hr 16' - 16 mile run - last long run before the taper Friday - 2 hrs on trainer and 33' swim. Day started at 3:45 am. I think I need help, but the end is near.
Saturday will be all about pain. Hot and humid back in the East which means race conditions for Eagleman. 3-4hrs on the bike and 30'-45' run. I may even try to swim outside as our community pool opens Saturday. Taper madness starts Sunday.

![]() | ![]() Great news from Orthopedist (an MD) today. Checked out my achilles. Yes I have Achilles Tendinitis and probably irritated bursa around it, but no ruptures, and in his words "I'm fine with you running through this. Just make sure you ice it afterwards." (This guy is a sports medicine specialist. He works with athletes a lot.) To celebrate, went for 6 mile run with my lovely wife at HER MAF pace. So my average heart rate was 125. 6.06 miles 58:15. I'm icing it now. It still was sore, but I'm no longer running with fear that I'm causing damage. - Mitch: S 6 / B 15 / R 16 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 37 ; 24:57'47" - Andy: S 9 / B 11 / R 14 /Rest Days 5 ; Total = 36 (Two extra from two races); 31:03'43" - Gabe: S 10 / B 11 / R 11 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 33 ; 43:33'11" (One extra from one race) - Scott: S 3 / B 7 / R 15 / Rest Days 6 ; Total = 30 ; 27:40'00" - JoeP: S 10/ B 12/ R 9 / Rest Days 3 ; Total = 21 ; 38:09'50" - Ernesto: S 6 / B 11 / R 11/ Rest Days 4 ; Total = 28 ; 34:38'55" - Barry: S 6 / B 7 / R 14/ Rest Days 4 ; Total = 27 ; 22:39'17" - Mike: S 10 / B 4 / R 8 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 26 ; 25:34'08" - Jim: S 0 / B 13 / R 10 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 24 ; 22:41'18" (1pt post race) - Samyg S 7 / B 8 / R 8 / Rest Days 3 ; Total = 23 ; 20:15':52" - Rachel: S 5 / B 8 /R 7 / Rest Days 4; Total = 20 ; 25:49'10" - Marcia: S 4 / B 8 / R 8/ Rest Days 6 ; Total = 20 ; 24:21’ - Jennie: S 6 / B 5 / R 9/ Rest Days 5 ; Total = 20 ; 12:56'36" - Markz: S 2 / B 7/ R 11 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 20 ; 27:02'00" - Chris: S 4 / B 5 / R 8 / Rest Days 6 ; Total = 19 (2 extra from race); 18:15:11" - Adrian: S 3 / B 8 / R 7 / Rest days 1 ; Total = 19 ; 21:12'53" - Jackie: S 3 / B 6/ R 3 / Rest Days 6 ; Total = 16 (4 extra from two races) ; 12:28'29" - Lynne: S 3 /B 3 / R 8 / Rest Days 5; Total= 14 ; 10:51'41" - Ted: S 0 / B 5 / R 5 / Rest Days 1 ; Total = 10 ; 9:56:00" - David: S 2 / B 2 / R6 / Rest Days 3 ; Total = 10 ; 08:48'15" - Charlotte S 1 / B 3 / R 5/ Rest Days 5 ; Total= 9 ; 06:12':00" - MatthewS: S 0 / B 3 / R 1/ Rest Days 1 ; Total = 4 ; 06:14'00" Edited by chris2533 2012-05-25 6:05 PM |

I need to have similar conversation with my Sports Med Doc (he was the physician for last two Winter Olympics for TeamUSA) about my shin discomfort. I want to make sure it's not worse than I think. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Was able to convince my 2 year old to let me pull her behind my Mtn Bike for about 45 minutes (she got chocolate chip cookies after). Nice intensity on the ride and was able to get my HR elevated a bit. Had hoped to run today but decided to let my shin rest a bit. Goal is to swim and then run easy tomorrow morning. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/181979668 - Mitch: S 6 / B 16 / R 16 / Rest Days 4 ; Total = 38 ; 25:42'03" |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went out for a quickie bike ride, wore the heart rate monitor for the first time except my ride is getting lost transferring between my Edge and Garmin Connect, so I have no idea what it was. Should MAF apply to bike rides as well, or do we just stick that to running and ride at another target heart rate?

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() chris2533 - 2012-05-25 8:32 PM Andy, Just got back from Tobacco Grove. Hmmmmm.
Did you ride your bike there at least? Just kidding, I sure wish we had a decent cigar lounge anywhere around here. Tobacco Grove is actually the closest one to me! Other than my garage, which at least is heated during the winter. What did you have? |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() I live a mile away. I didn't "have" anything. Just bought a couple of cigars, both pretty cheap. One Cusano and one factory reject I wanted to check out. I will smoke the factory reject on my deck tonight. I should try the more expensive ones since I smoke so few, but I just can't make myself do it. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gabe, I knew you'd get hooked. If you can manage your environment to put in all the training (and obviously you can) - great! Chris, good news about the foot! So good to have real doctors around who know what to do (unlike the quacks we deal with here). It was cold this morning here and I did only 1hr on the bike. Question for Ernesto (and others): Is an investment in an aero helmet worthwhile? There's a pretty good deal out there for a Giro aero helmet at $120. Thoughts?
