Are you going race again this season Carla?

Not sure about this season... trying to "financially secure" next season, which is cutting into the budget for "this season".

* Kathleen is talking me into a few Century Rides

* I'm interested in a 4 week Time Trial Series (which I may talk Kathleen into)

* 2013 Any one done Wild Flower?

http://www.tricalifornia.com/index.cfm/WildFlower2013-course_descriptions_long_course.htm

I have been thinking long and hard about Wild Flower - but am intimidated by the course - everyone says it is one of the hardest courses and it will be my first HIM.  Timing and location is perfect, just the course is not.  There is another smaller HIM in CA (Napa area) that same day - may do that one instead. Would love to do Wild Flower though!

[Challenging First Half Ironman]

Hark!  Did someone say something about Wild Flower! ???

Robin Gray - I do think the course will be challenging, which is why it is on my "radar"... however, if you are a strong cyclist, there is no reason to be intimidated by the bike profile.

While the Half Ironman Distance will be new to you... as long as you train and plan to be prepared for the challenge, I don't see anything wrong with taking on a challenging course as your first Half.

Others share your thoughts on a "Challenging First Half Ironman"

HIM's are challenging regardless of the course and take a reasonable amount of training to safely complete.  If you are going to do a hilly course you just need to train in the hills.  I know that a hilly or challenging course can be intimidating, but if you taylor your training to the challenges of the course you will be fine!

Both of you should do the race!!

The one main concern I have for the Wild Flower is most of my bike training will be done indoors due to Alaska winters (aka snow packed trails and roads).  I will probably only be able to get safely outdoors the last month up to the race. Can I simulate the hills on the trainer?

Spin class on taps for later this morning - getting my workouts back on tap - yeah!

We use the Computrainer to simulate hills when the weather outside is not cooperating. Do you have access to a Computrainer? They may have a "Real Course Video" that will allow you to see the course and experience the hills!

Carla is right if you have access to computrainer.  Personally I just put the bike into a gear that forces a harder effort at a lower cadence.  As a matter of fact I have a tendency to do most of my trainer rides like this which will help if and when I get releases outside again.  I do need to put some higher RPM sets together though just to get the legs used to a variety of RPM,s.

But back on point, yes you can successfully simulate hills on the trainer.  That is what I find very useful about the trainer is that it allows you to simulate a variety of situations.  So if you live in a hilly area that doesn't have a good place to do extended rides in aero and you want to do a race in Florida, you can simulate that on the trainer as well.

Robin, I go to computrainer classes in the winter at a local tri shop/tri culb.  They don't do too much as far as hills though.  What I do is simulate them on the my trainer.  I have a KK trainer and KK power computer on my road bike and I also have a powertap on one of my TT bikes that I use on the trainer over the winter.  What you can do to simulate hills is create workouts that use a low cadence and higher power.   For example, here is one of my favorite hill workouts:

20 minute warmup

6x4 minutes build 85-100% FTP (or CT) over the 4 minutes, at 60-70cadence

3 minutes rest between sets

5 minute Cool Down

Thanks for the tips on getting quality hill workouts done on the trainer everyone.  I will have to check into computrainer classes in Anchorage - not sure if there are any, but worth a try.

That workout sounds grueling but fun Brian - thanks!  I also have some sufferfest videos that do some longer climbs that always kick my butt!

On tap for today - short run and weights.  Then blueberry picking with the kids!

How's everyone's week so far? :-)

I had the highest volume in cycling this week (140 mi) and one of the hardest climbs I ever did (VERY slow, but it was a freakish hard climb...3-5% for 13 miles w/ 4000' elevation gain! Surprised).

Today, I was hit with a blow - my car was making some really weird noise when I use the brakes, so I had to take it in, and was told that all four brakes are completely shot. So...had to fork over quite a bit of money to get them all fixed. It was considered unsafe to drive (and I've ignored this problem for months).

What does that mean for me? There's a chance that I may not be able to do my HIM. Cry  I have not registered yet (the price is fixed, so it's not going to increase).  I'm not sure what I'm going to do. It really depends on how I do next month. Especially with my wedding coming up in two months.

I was invited to an extended bike ride in Prescott, AZ with a group of friends in a couple weeks, and I've been dying to go out of town ride for the past three years! So, that's not going to change.

Sure I can put off a HIM until later, but this would be after I have a kid...I guess I'm afraid that my fitness that I worked so hard this year won't really come back.

UGH....This is driving me bonkers!! :-)

I'm alright, a little disappointed, but it could have been worse...I'm not injured, I'm healthy, I am safe, I have a home with 6 animals, I'm getting married, etc... We'll see how it plays out the next couple weeks.

Hope everyone is doing well...it's been awfully quiet in here!

Great cycling DJ!  That is an awesome climb!

Tough deal on the HIM, has anyone ever put race entry fees in the wedding gift registry?

Either way, your fitness will comeback and even if you do wait till after child birth a lot of people train far into their pregnancy and get back to it fairly soon after so you don't have to lose your fitness if you choose not to.

Nice job on the bike.

My transmission went out right around Christmas last year and right after having our baby.  The finances are still in recovery mode.  It stinks, but it's part of life.  At least you're worried and thinking about it and not a person that automatically whips out a credit card.

On the baby front - obviously, I can't speak to it personally exactly, but my son just turned 8 months and my wife just got back to her per-pregnancy weight and is training for her first HM in September.  It may be faster for you, she's pissed because several of her friends got skinny faster than she did despite all the work that she put in (I've heard this a lot).

Anyway, don't let it make you think that your fitness will completely end after - you'll lose a year, but you can get back.

Good luck

Nice riding - impressive climbing!

Sorry to hear about the car.  We need to take both our cars in for new tires, brakes, etc.... Been putting it off due to $$$ - sucks.

Also understand about having to drop a race - dropping the oly this weekend is a bit of a bummer for me. Problem here is there is only 1 oly distance event per year in all of Alaska.

I like the idea Ken had - can you ask someone close to you for an early wedding present in the form of race registration? or help with new brakes?

Swim later today - getting back in the swing of things.

DJ - That's a crazy climb.  Congrats.  Sorry about the bad luck, but glad you opted for safety first...

I have been race-less for a whole week and half now and won't have another until a 9/9 HIM.  I'm not sure what to do with myself, so might as well keep up with the increasing volume I'm supposed to be doing...

I'm recovering from a cold that I've had since Saturday.  Funny, but it's hurting my swim way worse than bike/run.  I think its an equilibrium thing since my head feels like its filled with mud.

I've got a new side effect from s/b/r to deal with.  Sore, raw thumbs.  I mounted my first set of tubulars last night and I guess my soft little accountants' hands weren't made for muscling those things onto rims.  After a lot of work, I should finally get to try out the new race wheels on Saturday's long ride.

Happy training All!!!

How do you like the tubulars compared to clinchers?  Do you notice a difference?

I think we have a couple of people racing this weekend!  Speak up!  Smile  Good luck!

Me, I am racing to Atlantic City for the weekend for our anniversary and a Jimmy Buffett concert!! Should be a great time!!

Awesome, you'll be in my home state! I'm from North Jersey, AC is in South Jersey...two different worlds. LOL! If you pass Boonton/Morristown, think of me! :-)  I'm not sure if you're coming down on 287 or Rt 80 to GSP, or going through PA.

Have a great time!!

I am not sure which way we are going yet, I need to google it but I think we will be going through Pennsylvania and crossing into Jersey near Philly.  Interesting side note, I had an interview yesterday with a gentleman originally from this area that now lives in Morristown but is looking to return back here.

Have a great weekend all!!

Thanks for the info Carla!

Good luck Kathleen!! Have a great race!!

Carla,  you are to funny

Thanks Ken!

I have been struggling to get motivated for this race. I am not prepared for it  but my training has improved since I started working with a coach.   I tweaked my shoulder a couple of weeks ago and I haven't been swimming. There is talk of the race being non wetsuit legal but I am not in a position to podium so will wear one regardless.  I could gut it out without it if I had to but it would not be my preference. I really need to get swimming more.  The run on this course is brutal because it is always really hot! There is not a bit of shade and it is supposed to be 95 on Sunday. I have done this race twice before so I know what to expect. I don't have any real goals except to try and prevent heat stroke

Have a great weekend everyone!
