In February, I will start my 18 week HIM plan for Rev 3 Williamsburg. Two months of rehab on my piriformis and I am feeling mostly well. Back and hip pain has been subsiding while work load has increased. I will wind up on some variation of a swim 3x, run 3x and bike 4x weekly program. With a rest day mixed in and work so completely out of control, my schedule will be on overload. This injury and the slow road back has killed my motivation and when I look at my nominal "A" race I am questioning whether I can or want to put forward an A race training effort. In 2012, I crushed my goals and now I lack direction and focus. 2014 will be about IMAZ, but what about 2013? Help! Simul post with Randy - added him in ! Joe- I too am battling a lack of focus due to an injury throwing off my training plan. The turned ankle in November forced me to cancel the Ultra I planned for this month and now I have very little motivation to get back into serious training. Part of that I think is a little fear that I'm going to re-injure the ankle. I am still getting to the gym despite a crazy work and home schedule but that is mainly because I know if I don't burn off the stress in some constructive way I'll have to burn it off in a destructive way. The workouts I'm doing lack focus and purpose. I'm mostly just going through the motions. I'm currently trying to find myself a coach/ mentor/ training partner that I can start working out with to help in this area. Perhaps that would work for you? I can't wait! I know that there is no 21 month training plan, but AZ 2014 IS my goal and I am building toward that race. Since that is my goal, I've opted to strip everything down and rebuild it. I started on a HIM plan last week. Since swimming for me right now is hit and miss, the goal is to replace those with the bike. Keep your eye on the prize all of this is base training for the BIG ONE! A 21 month focus on training is nothing for you. You went to law school, so you can handle a long tedious goal. Plus any saddle sores from the bike are nothing compared to the pains in the A$$es you deal with at work KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE! Scott- Rehab always stinks, If you keep to the grind you will work through this, and it will be better. You might want to sign up for a race to put pressure on yourself. Getting injured sucks. Mine came last year right when I was seeing real gains and gearing up for a long season of races. I honestly was depressed when I accepted the fact that I had to stop running and really clear my calendar of all races for the year. I knew I had to let my body heal and tell me when it was ready to go hard again. I did one race at the end at the end of the year and it was really just so I didn't lose my entrance fee. Ultimately i think the injury will be a positive in the long run as it has forced me to build the base i lacked. I think my advice is to continue to go slow, ensure that you are healthy and slowly start adding in some scheduled intense workouts. I think once your training plan starts you will start to be motivated by the workouts being planned / scheduled. Decide at a later date whether your race is an A or not. Too much pressure on top of our everyday lives can't be good, this is all supposed to be fun at the end of the day!Mitch51:52 - 6 miler is the longest run since November. Great Testimony, Joe, Thanks! I read all last year as each of you E-Vets tried the MAF method of training and resisted - until now, and already I can see the benefits, especially with my patience :-) |

Almost all of my running has been on the treadmill (advertised as 7x more cushioned than concrete...). My plan is as the weather improves is to migrate my runs gradually back to concrete ensuring speedwork is done on the cushioned high school track. I will also try to do some of the long runs on rail trails. #1 goal is to stay healthy! |
