Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Yes I have an Olympic on Sunday. Should be pretty warm so a great opportunity to work on nutrition, calories, sodium, patience, discipline .... Hawaii is AWESOME! I would go every year if I could. My favorites were the helicopter ride around the island and the scuba diving (manta ray night dives). If you have a chance to do a puddle jump over to Pearl Harbor and do a day tour ... well worth it. Just a totally amazing and humbling experience!!! |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by jarvy01 Scott, Larkin, and Carrie are racing this weekend. Right? I'm doing a local sprint this Sunday. The bike course goes close to my house, so the kids can ride their bikes out to the main road and wave to me . I had really good splits at this race last year and I'm just looking to better last year's time by a bit (1:15 last year). It's supposed to be 90 with t storms. Hope the storms don't roll in until after my race or Lake Erie will be rough. Kick @ss everybody. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed My son got put on the A medley relay team swimming the breast leg. He is swimming with some fast kids. He must have put up a smoking fast breast leg in time trials the other day. I remember the coach from club swim saying this was his strong suit. I'd forgotten that. So proud of this kid!!!! He's also swimming 25 individual free and A team free relay. My daughter is doing 2 x 25 free exhibition. Most of the 6 year olds aren't swimming for points (a handful will be!). It should be an interesting evening. I'm going to take some pics and post one here |

I hope it holds off. My allergies have been epically bad this year so maybe it's that since they can feel the same. Hope it holds off if it's a cold. |

I believe race day it is on their main page. You don't have to look for that particular race. They do a video feed of the finish as well. |

Extreme Veteran 490 Higganum, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed question regarding heart rates: During the early morning training sessions: I really struggle to get/keep my HR in the right zones - for example, today I was supposed to do a 1:30 Z2 ride, which for me is 132 to 143 bpm. At the end of the 1:30, my average HR was 111 with a MAX of only 129. I was really trying to sustain a decent pace at 20 mph but actually ended up around 18, and it was very hard to "push" much faster that early in the morning. (4 to 5:30am). During the afternoon hours, I have the opposite issue, where it's way to easy for me to get above my HR Zones and not realize it - meaning I could spend 2 hours in the 160+bpm and not have any issues. (at a 21 mph ave pace) My coach is ready to kill me, because my HR is so variable and with an IM distance event, that's nothing but failure... Is this really a factor of me being lazy in the morning? Me hating the trainer so much, that I refuse to do what I should be doing? I just couldn't get myself to increase the pace from 18 to 20 and sustain it for any significant length of time this morning. Do I get too carried away riding outside on the roads? I was advised to cut out all caffeine, that didn't help much. I will say that trying to train in the right HR Zones has been my biggest challenge by far - and I'm failing miserably at it. Does anyone else struggle with following HR Zones while training? Just curious as to how you stay disciplined, especially in the early mornings. |

I think there are a lot of things going on here -- trainer v. road, stress during the day elevating your HR, daily eating patterns, etc. -- but the huge shift from AM to PM makes me wonder if something is going on biochemically. I almost wonder if there is a hormone inbalance at play. |

Does anyone else struggle with following HR Zones while training? Just curious as to how you stay disciplined, especially in the early mornings. For me, I find that it is easy to stay in HR zones if I am on the trainer. Outside it is more difficult, which I attribute to the fact that I live in a hilly area. It also seems that it is easier riding outside vs trainer but I have never noticed such large gaps in HR as you describe and I can always get it up to the max of where it should be. My HR tends to be lower in the morning. So when I run later in the day or in the evening, my HR is elevated a bit, which reduces my pace somewhat. I doubt this is what you are looking for but this has been my limited experience thus far. |
