Leah - I love that top too! I have a trisuit but I'm thinking of getting separates this year as trying to get that sucker down to go to the porta-potty is SUCH a pain!!

I'm finally out of the snow and working again. Hopefully the roads near my running store are cleared enough that I can run outside tonight, going to try. Plus, my snowshoes should be delivered today so if I can't run outside I can still get some running on the snow and a great leg workout! Back to the gym this week for swimming and looking into a Master's swim program!

To catch up with everyone I have 2 Jack Russell Terriers; Colby - 14 years old and Bates - 13 years old..not quick as energetic as they used to be but still highly entertaining!

I guess I'll have to work on getting a profile pic up later this week. I've got pics up in my profile, just not as my profile pic. Tried multiple times but it never worked!

IdealMuse - 2010-02-15 9:16 PM Nov is also a looooong way off to get where you need to be. Who makes the top? I like it.

Athleta.com.  They have a whole lot of things that I like.  I got the tri top and tri shorts (basic black on those) and one pair of shorts and two tops.

Yes, get an avatar posted.  If I can do it, you can do it.  The key is that it has to be under 50 kb,

Athleta.com - Dangerous! Cute stuff. I'll have to drop some $$ there when my size stops changing.

Kir - Love the kitties and the names too.

Lisa - Talk to me about Bike watts. I What's a good # for an "average" biker? I did 200 during our threshold test today and it's really my first test with power. That sounds fairly decent for the beginning of training but I really have little to compare that to? (I only can compare it to the rest of the group and I seemed to be somewhere in the middle)

Leah - Love the website.  (I will look like those models one of these days.)  I think I need a new trisuit.  I don't love mine.  It works but it isn't flattering AT ALL!  I wear a one piece TYR right now.  It cost $100 at a local tri shop so I can't justify a new one anytime soon.  I should have done some on-line shopping but I so wanted a suit before my fall races.  I love the two piece suits.  Unfortunately I have the Apple Shape body type so if I wear a two piece I get serious "muffin top" around my middle. Maybe I can reward myself before all IMAZ.

This weekend my bro in law is setting up Tri/brick work out.  He is having us do about 50 miles.  1400m swim, 41 mile bike, and 9 mile run.  There will be 4 of us doing it.  He thinks we should take our time on transitions and just get the distance in.  I'm dreading it.  The 3 others participating are all FAST on the bike and run.  Two are also fast on the swim.  I don't want to hold everything up.  I know I need to combine the sports but I would almost rather do it by myself. My honey offered to meet me at the pool and ride with me so I wouldn't be all alone on the bike ride.  Too cute!  It will be interesting to see how it all works out.  I'm glad I have people who support me and want to push me.

ATTN All HIM trainers!  Leah and I have 37 days until our race.  I think it is fair to say we both wish we had another month to train for this race.   If you have a race coming up.  Step it up and take it seriously b/c it is scary when you see it approaching!

Go Team NUTSO!!

37 days... wow! That came quick!

Scary and exciting all at the same time. I think you guys will do great! Just don't go out too hard.. (been there done that) and perhaps try and think about it as a training race for things to come, and not the be-all-end-all of things. You will ROCK that bigass hill.

Thanks Debb - I appreciate the encouragement.

Quick question - A guy on here named Swank Guy is doing the race with me and Leah.  He did a computrainer ride of the CA70.3.  I don't really understand it.  How does it work?  They hook my bike up to the ride and then the trainer sets the resistance?  Does that mean I still have to work my gearing and everything?  I've never been on a trainer so I am confused by this concept.    If anyone can explain this to me, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Kate- Computrainer is one gadget I don't have, though I considered getting one, perhaps next year. It attaches to a computer and can record and present all kinds of data. You can get courses of most Ironman events that include both video and course elevation profile information. It has it's own trainer base and it changes resistance on it per the data on the course software.

Debb- 200 sounds good to me, much better than me, I avg 153 over 20 minutes on my latest test. One guys on the Spinnervals test video did 350 for most of the test but they didn't say anything about power on the other riders.

What power tells you is no matter the course, your power can be reliably monitored. I could do 2 25 mile rides, one could be completely flat, one completely hilly. But the power output could be roughly the same if I'm trying to work on consistency so when I do a long ride or an unknown ride I can monitor my power output and not burn out to fast.
Here is an online webinar about training with power for trathletes:

Avatar pictures can only be 50kb.  If you post a picture in a message, those can be 100kb.  I just did this, but I got Chuck to make the pictures be the right size, I didn't have to go to irfanview so I didn't have to figure that one out.

I'm thinking about getting a Computrainer in April when I get my new tri bike.  My Ironman goals are Arizona in November and then a European one in the Summer of 2011.  I would like to do Nice in June 2011 because I have family there, but it is a tough, tough, hilly, hilly bike.  I think that a Computrainer would probably be the most effective way of training for that.  But, I am only doing a European Ironman, with all the expense, hassle, trouble and planning that that would involve, if I do OK in Arizona.  So it is tough to justify the Computrainer in April because it would primarily be for the Nice Ironman, when I won't commit to that until November.

I have (or will have by then) $6-7,000 saved up for my new bike and gadgets.  I know I have enough to get it, or at least I think I do.  I just haven't started seriously planning yet how to spend the money.

I only plan on doing two IMs - Arizona and Nice.  After that, HIMs and Olys only.  This training is hard on my elderly body!!!

I'm sorry - I thought this was a forum for HIM's...All I see is pictures of cats?  It was bad enough hanging with attorneys and artists..but cat people?  How is everyone?  Sorry for the absence. The computer issues took two weeks to fix at work..don't even ask about productivity.  I went through my training schedule with a new friend I met..she has only been doing tris for 2 years and is already qualified for nationals in her age group.  Gave me a lot of good advice. She will also be indispensable when it comes to nutrition.  She is big into supplements during the race..I am not a convert to that but will give it a try at some point.

I am here to stay... So. Lent starts today..any fellow Catholics out there? I am giving up white bread, white rice..etc.. That will be huge for me.

Later.

Yes the computrainer changes resistance for you Kate and they can be programed with resistance to mimic the rides of different courses. You change gears w/ resistance in order to practice gear shifts and how you'd handle hills. You can try not switching gears if you want to really workout the legs but you won't last long on the tougher hill profiles. A normal fluid trainer changes resistance as you pedal more/shift gears but won't change the resistance on you by itself.

Catholic? Well I was Baptized as one but I'm not a religious girl.

Anyway here is what coach says about power zones: (Mine is 2.3 apparently which will improve with weight loss and training)

*2 - 2.5 watts/kg is what you see from most beginner to average triathletes
*2.5 - 3 watts/kg is from more of the middle of the pack triathlete, comfortable with pushing more on the bike but not necessarily a 'strong' cyclist
*3 - 3.5 watts/kg is from more of the top of the middle of the pack triathlete, good potential here, stronger cyclist than most
*3.5 - 4 watts/kg is from someone who might place in the top 5 at their AG at a larger event, strong cyclist, might be strong runner (depends on body composition)
*4 - 4.5 watts/kg is from a top age grouper, might place in the top 3 overall/in AG at a larger event, strong cyclist and likely strong runner too because of their body composition
* 4.5+ watts/kg is generally pro triathlete-level

Weight loss this week 3lbs. (184)

I had a little trouble sleeping last night since the LT test was all "all out" kind of thing and between that and it being late at night... had trouble winding down.

Today is a rest day for me. Might walk to the P.O. or something but that's about it.

Lisa - Sounds fascinating. Let us know if you pick up any good/unusual tips. The how to improve X in 10 minutes intrigue me.

I'm off for a "taxing" stroll to the post office to mail a package. I donated a handmade journal on Etsy for Haiti Relief / Doctors w/o borders... so that's going off to its off to a new home.

Sunny and 60 - which ya know isn't really short weather, but it is!
Of course this same unseasonably warm weather is wreaking havoc up in Vancouver.
Any other Olympics fans?
I also used to be a pretty rabid skier so I love all things winter olympics.

Kiri,

I was running slower and slower for the past couple years.  As much as I hate to admit it, the treadmill really helped me learn that I could run faster than I thought.  Start with a comfortable pace on it and push your intervals.  The run program I used for my half mary a couple weeks agohad me start aerobic intervals 2x30 seconds building up to 3x 4 min by the time I peaked.  It also had me doing goal pace work (for me 9:00 was around goal).

If you can do intervals on a track with others you have the same effect and no machine.

Another thing to help you is music tempo. You can train with it and use it in most run alone races.  Pick something that will make you MOVE.  I have the Curves fitness music which is set at 140 beats/minute.  If I really keep to the beat my foot strike turnover is really fast!

Thanks for the info everyone!  I am going to sign up for the computrainer ride.  It is $25.oo at a local bike store. So worth it to me to get a taste of the course.  I'm also going to try to get a photo up soon.

Scott - Glad you made it back.  We were missing your craziness around here!
