Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carrie1- Thanks. QUESTION FOR ALL/ANY: I've used a sleeveless wetsuit my entire triathlon career, but I am considering trying a long-sleeved wetsuit. Does anyone have any experience with being a regular sleeveless wetsuit wearer and then going to a sleeved one? I'm curious about the transition. I'm particulalry curious about the issues of range of motion and stress on the shoulders and triceps. If you have had this experience, maybe you could rate it for me on a range of 1 to 4. 1. I didn't notice any difference at all. 2. There was some difference, but it was not significant. 3. The difference was apparent and took getting used to (my shoulders were sore after 800m). 4. Oh my goodness! What have I done to myself!? Thanks for any input on this matter...no it is not for IMLOU, I know better than that. |

I placed 6th overall, of 60 (small and not very deep field), and 1st of 12 in the 40-44 age group. If you want to read the details, you can click on the link above, but the key points are these: My Achilles held out (albeit sore), and I rode rather well. Good stuff. Good for confidence. My next Road to IMLOU vid. will have some coverage. I'm not sure when I'll get that out, but today/tonight is the goal. Peace...~Sam |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!!!! Louisville is FAST this year and ready for some Ironman PRs! My wife and I went out and crushed our best half marathon times this weekend and had a blast. After I finished I was really excited because I just dropped almost 3 minutes off my PR and it felt easy (until the last mile, when I sprinted faster than my best 10k pace). I decided I would wait for my wife so we could get our picture together, when I turned around in the refreshment area (fully expecting to have to wait for a few minutes) she was right behind me! Good thing I dropped all that time or she would have passed me, I beat her by less than a minute. I will do a race report if anyone is interested. Bottom line - Obviously everyone is going to have an AWESOME race and have a blast this year in Louisville! |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a great race weekend too. I did the Derby mini-marathon; PR'd with 1:49. I was pleased that I improved by 5 min off of my Indy Monumental Half-marathon time from Nov. Congrats everyone on their races. I am looking forward to a nice low intensity-recovery week, then back out to breaking down new barriers. Also, I am thinking that next year I may need to skip the derby races and head up to do the Flying Pig in Cinci.... there is something about getting a "pig with wings" medal that has got me interested. Have a good week. J |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First and foremost, congrats to everyone that had success in races this past weekend. Really happy for you all. Saturday I followed the Be Iron Fit Competitive plan and did a 3 hour bike/ 30 minute run. Overcast, windy, and temps in the low 40's--therefore I did everything inside. Yuck. I have a question regarding nutriotion for those that have completed an Ironman. I took in about 220 calories per hour between gels and IronMan Perform and felt great. I felt as though I could have run for days. Granted, I didn't swim and the bike was only half of what I expect for my Ironman pace. Here's the deal, I just looked at a nutrition chart put out by Infinit. I plugged in my weight, mph expectation, elevation gain, etc. and the chart suggested that I take in 277 to 462 calories per hour on race day. So my question is, should I train at those calories even though I am not doing the full distance in my training or should I train with the product at the number of calories that will get me through my training session on that particular day? I kinda feel that 277 to 462 calories per hour this past weekend would have been overkill. Any advice? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for all the congrats, guys! And congrats to everyone else who raced this weekend, too!! Lots of awesome results. Redremy ~ you've got to come up for the Pig next year, great race, I'm fortunate that it's in my backyard! I've got quite a collection of those "Piggie" medals (3 fulls, 1 half) and they are some of my favorites. They put on quite an event; awesome expo, good swag (backpack, tech shirt, poster), lots of volunteers and thousands upon thousands of people lining the streets ~ rain or shine. I hope you can make it up sometime! Recovery (much needed) week for me, too and then some hard core training for the next few months, ahhhh.....my favorite time of the year |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Nathan, in regards to your question about nutrition I am certainly no expert but I would think you probably want to try using that concentration as frequently as possible before race day so your system is used to and comfortable with processing what you put in. The long workouts are definitely the most important for ensuring it will work, but if you can determine on a shorter ride that it's not gonna work then you just saved yourself a miserable long ride. I am still trying to figure out how I am going to conquer this beast in terms of nutrition and hydration, but I learned a good lesson last year: if you are bonking in most of your longer workouts, your nutrition isn't working! Looking back on it I was basically slamming my head against a wall trying to make my strategy (Clif-shots/bloks with Ironman Perform and Salt Stick tabs) work for me, but it just wasn't. On the flip side, it worked great for my wife and she had high energy levels throughout the race, you just don't know until you try. I started out this year using Powerbar Gels with Perform, but one long/hot ride down = one bigtime bonk and I am on to something else. When I say bigtime bonk I mean three hours in and I am nauseaus, have a significant drop in power output and can't eat or drink anything else without the risk of "losing my lunch." I plan on trying First Endurance this weekend (if it comes in the mail on time) for my first attempt at a fluid only strategy. If that doesn't work I will try Infinit. Bottom line, you may have to do some tweaking, adjusting, or all-out overhauling of your nutrition strategy and the more times you practice it, the quicker you can get everything figured out. By the way, I am open to suggestions if anyone else sweats a LOT and has high salt content in that sweat and has figured out the hydration/nutrition strategy for Louisville. I have no idea how to keep from severe dehydration or hyponatremia (or both) if the heat index is over 100 all day again. Last year I was crushed by 80 miles on the bike and was cramping the rest of the way to the finish, turns out I had lost 6.8% of my bodyweight through sweat by the end despite drinking constantly. Hopefully it warms up soon here in Indy so I can start figuring things out, but so far every day is either rainy, cold, or extremely windy and I have few chances at trial and error experiments. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Two jerseys, plus a vest, heavier weight bibs, thicker arm and leg warmers, helmet liner, and toe/shoe covers and full-finger gloves--just standard equipment for Michigan rides these past days. Hope we get some warmer temps--even high 50s would be better than mid 40s. Brrrrr! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last month, when the temperatures started hitting the high 80s, low 90s, I started doing my runs around 4 or 5 pm, this month the temps are getting into the mid 90s daily, and I am doing my runs at the same times. I am getting a head start on getting heat acclimated for the big race, I hope this works. |

![]() | ![]() Did the Try Charleston Half Iron Race in Charleston, SC on Saturday. Swim: 39min. Bike: 3:03. Run: 2:07. Total time 5:55:20. Very happy with my results. It had a hot and humid run. Got my nutrition down without any GI issues. I hope this is good preparation for IM LOU. Happy training everyone.

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Tulkas - I agree, the heat and dehydration are a big concern for me too. I live in Louisville and remember my midday runs last August and feeling like I was in an oven. I brought this same issue up my coach. Basically at this point my plan is to determine my personal avg hourly sweat loss rate and try and replenish oz for oz. Also, I am experimenting with salt tabs (Enduralites) and getting my body used to them. I actually really like the enduralites b/c I think they are helping to put off my muscle fatigue for a bit longer. I've noticed less cramping too. I cannot say for sure that it is only the salt tabs though; but I have noticed a correlation. Joking we determined that I cannot prevent dehydration from happening on race day, but you can slow the progress and manage it.... hopefully. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you for the words of support, encouragement, and kudos. Congratulations to all on their respective racing and training exploits. Keep it on, but do what makes sense. I was cooked last night and was feeling not quite myself, so I passed on this morning's swim. Rest was more critical. Peace, ~Sam |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for sharing Sam, I too had to skip my swim workout this morning. I hurt my left should really bad on Monday swimming, and can't lift my arm without pain. I am icing and stretching it like crazy now, since I have an intermediate distance tri on Saturday. I think the culprit is my crappy swimming, I think it was too much crossing my left arm in the middle of my body in the stroke. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, it's not that I'm not listening. I hear my body, I just like what it's trying to tell me. You see, I'm starting to feel a little under the weather. A friend of mine once responded to this statement by telling me, "Well, it's better to fell a little under the weather than to feel a little under the weather man." "Dude!" I believe was my reply. This bad joke was told to me back in high school, and I can't seem to shake it. Now you are stuck with it. Good luck. |
