Yay for the skinny comment Kim, that's awesome!!!

So today I did a 40min swim workout.  There were a lot of rests because I followed one of the swim workouts on here and I was pulling and kicking and swimming.  Doing all this which I haven't done before, I just plain swam, I realized that my swimming sucks because of my kick.  I always thought it was my weak arms but to my surprise when I used the floaty thing that goes between your legs and I just used my arms I just flew through the water no problem it was awesome!  And my kicking with the kickboard took me forever.  So, I have decided that I need to get my body flatter in the water like when I use the leg floaty but I'm not sure how.  I could kick faster but I'm not sure that's all there is to it.  Should my feet be coming out of the water and splashing when I kick or should they be just under the surface?  Also any other techniques to keep my body flatter in the water?  I'm thinking I need to pull my chin down toward my chest a little too, I think I have a tendency to look up while I'm swimming and I assume that would translate to my legs going down into the water a bit.  Any help would be great!  I feel like I'm right on the edge of being able to really enhance my swimming here.

I'm serious.  Check out Mr. Smooth.  The website and the avatar give great instruction on these kinds of things.
Your head needs to be down, you are absolutely right.  Lift it and your legs sink and you are plowing through the water. Relax your neck, look down and let your body find the right level.  Turn your head only as far as you have to to breath.  One eye remaining in the water is just fine.
And you are right-on about the kick.  Swimmers kick hard because they don't have far to go.  They can afford it.  But a HUGE percentage of energy is used on the kick.  Our aim is to kick just hard enough to keep our lower body up. Use fins for kicking exercises.  They will give you the "feel" of what your kick should be like without them.   Wet suits are a big advantage but they won't correct all the deficiencies. We need to have the right form too.   You can do it!

I agree that it sounds like a body position problem.  I would try keeping your head low, especially during breathing.  I've noticed that may beginning swimmers lift their heads way up for a breath, then their hips sink and they try to compensate by doing a crazy kick.  Aside from a light flutter to maintain balance, you don't need much of a kick at all.

Good luck!  It sounds like you're off to a good start.

All good comments.  Also make sure you are exhaling with your head under water.  You should have already exhaled before you bring your head up. Also when leaving the wall try to get a good streamline push.  That will also lift your legs into the correct position.

Being a former swimmer, I have an awesome kick and love kicking. The kickboard is my fav! However, I probably expend way too much energy. Also like to pull  - maybe I just like the gadgets Smile keeps the boredom away.

The kick starts in the core and hips.    The kick shouldn't churn up a lot of water, mostly offset the body roll.  (It should be more than just dragging your legs behind you though.)  And the floaty thing that you put between your legs is a pull-bouy.

Head position:  Aligned, so not quite tucked all the way down, but also not looking forward.  At first, it'll feel "tucked" because it's not what you've been doing all along.

I have been swimming for about a year now, and this was the first time I bothered to take my camera to the pool.  One of my training buddies shot this for me so I could see my stroke.  Not perfect form by any means, but overall I was not unhappy with it.

Here is a link if anyone would like to see it.

Good morning McFuzzies!  I hope everyone has a great training weekend.  I get to meet a fellow BTer who wants to drive out from Salt Lake City to swim at Blue Lake since he's seen me post about it!   Pretty cool!

Is anyone racing this weekend?

Thanks for all the kudos guys!  This training is really changing my life more so than anything I've done before!

Well, I finally did it - bought a new bicycle!  It's a Felt ZW75. It's a huge upgrade from my 1990 heavy aluminum Trek.  I'd post a picture, but my camera's batteries are dead.  Now i am ready to hit the road - after next weekend's marathon that is.

Happy Friday all.

Why are my forum pages all drifting to the right? Just the forums... there's a big blue field on hte left and all the posts are out of the frame and to the right side of the page. Weird.

Hello my fellow McFuzzies!!!

I'm back, busy with work last week & this week.  Sorry I haven't checked in lately...

I hope all of you have had a great training week.  It looks like we're going to have a break in the weather soon. Come on earlie spring!!! It's going to be great to go out and run outside.  I like to run when it's at least 30 degrees.

Kim  - Congratulations on your weight loss & I'm sure more compliments are to come Wink
Stephanie - SWEET BIKE!! I know your gonna love it.
Mike - WELCOME BACK, did you miss us? ( You know you did )
Nicky - Your bike class sounds like a lot of fun.  Keep going it will get better.
Angi - You try your 305 yet?  How do you like it?
Shannon - I checked out the Mr. Smooth that Scott's talking about and it's VERY helpful.  I swim when the local swim team swims, and I watch them underwater when I swim to check out how they're moving.  That has helped me also.
Ann-Marie - Congrat's on your new felt, enjoy!

Everyone keep up the great work on your work-outs, and ALWAYS keep your eye on the prize!! - Maria

I had my longest run week ever - 18 miles!!! My longest run was just shy of 7 miles.  Every week should be a new PR until my Half Mary on May 1st. Just need to keep my motivation up now.

Morning McFuzzies!  I posted this question in the Triathlon Talk as well.  Thanks for any insight!

I am confused so I'm hoping someone can help me out here.  I have a KK Road Machine that I've been riding since Jan.1.  When I set it up, I set the resistance and have just left it.  My rides have been, on average, around 16, 16.5 mph.  It's been difficult to get my heart rate up into zone 2 and keep it there.  Reading other posts about mph, I realized this fairly slow.  It got me thinking maybe I've had the resistance too tight.  This morning I loosened it.  I rode 20.63 miles in 57 minutes. My heart rate stayed consistently in upper Zone 2 with occasional jumps into low zone 3 on some timed intervals.   On Wednesday I rode 23.20 miles in 1:26--much slower.  So now I'm wondering if I have it too loose?  How do you know where to set the resistance for maximum benefit?  My logs are current from Jan. 1 if that helps.  Thanks for any input!

Excellent!  I'm right there with ya, sister.  I have realized that we're all heading into the long haul.  We'll help keep each other motivated...you until your race in May and me until my HIM in June!  We can do it!

Loving the Garmin 305.  Have only used the very basic functions so far but just set my profile info today so I can see how many calories I burn tomorrow.  It is a bit bulky but doesn't bother me once I get moving and the data is going to be invaluable.  Might try the heart monitor tomorrow also if I get it set up tonite.

Congrats on building those miles.  You are going to be in great shape by May!

I had my biggest bike week--6.6 hours.  I wish I had a way of estimating pace and distance on my trainer. Are there any affordable options that you guys know of?
