Can't blame the mailman, that's my husband! We can't deny our boys. The oldest looks like my side and the youngest looks like DH's side. Except the oldest has brown eyes. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, hope you are all well! Thanks to everyone who left me inspires. I've been so out of touch lately, with my pod and with training in general; not sure why, just soooo busy with work and activities. I'm back in business this week, with a quick run, Computraining and boot camp on the logs. I've got an 8miler on tap for this weekend, got to get the HM training back on track too. Looking to be more present now ![]() |

He let me check out the tooth and tissues that he cut away (and a bit o' bone as anticipated) and damn they were disgusting. I wish you a speedy, painless recovery! My dental surgeon let me keep my nasty wisdom teeth when they took them out---talk about motivation to keep my teeth in good shape! The worst part was not being allowed to eat real food for 2 days! I remember watching "Bizarre Foods" thinking oooh, that looks REALLY good! "You know you are really hungry when...." Okay, off to classes for me... First off, that is great news about school. Phhheeeww a huge relief I am sure! Second, hahaha about the above comment. I am probably supposed to get my wisdom teeth out but the thought of not eating real food is a HUGE deterrent. I was supposed to get mine out when I was in high school. Instead, I finished high school, graduated from college then law school, worked as a prosecutor then defense attorney and then general counsel for the sheriff and then had them out. Needless to say, they weren't impacted. Okay. Nobody hate me. This is one of the only really cool things about me: I have no wisdom teeth!! Never had them. I am an evolutionary freak of nature. Yeah, that's a little weird. For me, wisdom teeth surgery wasn't too bad. Mostly because the surgeon convinced my mom that general anesthesia was the way to go for me. Thank goodness. |

I try to buy "highlighter" colored biking apparel whenever I can. I got a new bright yellow zip-sleeve lined jersey a few weeks ago that i am excited to wear when the mercury drops. I really like the Brooks NightLife gear. I also have a biking jacket from Performance that is totally reflective and bright yellow. During the day, it just looks like a bright jacket. At night, if headlights shine on it, it reflects and is very hard to miss. |

I've done no training at all since Monday! I thought about getting up for 5.15am squad today but really it was dark and my bed was so comfortable. I'll get back to it all tomorrow! I can't train today - lunchtime we got a bbq at work, and tonight I'm out with my girlfriends for dinner. Oh I seem to have signed up for something.... I haven't done any training since Monday, either, but I didn't sign up for an IM. |

It's hard to talk to anyone about this stuff because they just don't understand, so ... sorry pod, you have to listen to me.
I had a choice last night to either hang back with the group that is a little bit slower or move a group ahead (who are admittedly better runners than I.) "Well sh*t," I thought, "I don't come all the way back here to take it easy." So I joined the other group and off we went. The workout was a 3.5 mile progressive run, going faster with each mile then faster yet with the last .5 miles. We did: 6:46 6:38 6:30 and 3:11 for the final half I was barely hanging on (per usual) and since I don't run with a watch I am at the other people's mercy. It was hell. Every second of it. But it's hard to explain, it was also somewhat euphoric. I know ... After that we had to jog to "the hill" (by the way, this group doesn't jog. They run. You can't fool me.) We had to do 5 repeats at full strength, just pushing as hard as we could to the top of the hill. It was dark by now and the hill was a gravel trail that is pretty steep. Anyway, I beat the 5 ladies and one guy in our group every single repeat! Ahhh the small victories!!!!!!!!!! Our coach said he is really happy with my progress in a short period of time BUT, (agh, the dreaded but!!!) I need to desperately work on my flexibility. Damn, busted! It's so true though. Hooray! A triple awesome. Did he make any suggestions about working on your flexibility? What does that mean exactly, in the context of running? Yeah, he gave me a series of flexibility exercises to do. In the context of running he said my inflexibility is limiting my stride. He said I am doing more work than I should and once I become more flexible I will have a little more flow. If that makes sense. He worded it really well and it's unfortunate I can't remember exactly how he said it but that is the gist. Hmmm. Interesting. I have a short stride (that comes with short legs), but when I watch Mirinda run, I think differently. She is about the same size as I am, and she definitely does not have a short stride. And I'm not tremendously flexible. What type of exercises, more specifically? Yoga and pilates type? I just want to be clear that we aren't talking about changing your stride. You are not Mirinda, you are not Salty, you are Felicia and you run in your own unique way. There are plenty of very successful runners who heelstrike, overpronate and everything in between. Strength and Flexibility both contribute to your efficiency and, over a long period of time, might change your overall form but that isn't the specific focus. More hip extension very likely WILL give you more stride length (and therefore generating more forward energy) but once again, changing that is not the focus. It's not so much that my stride is short or long, it's that my inflexibility is making it less smoothe and less efficient. As for exercises, I was directed to do mine 3 times during our hard workouts and 3 times a day on all other days. For now I do 3 variations of this: One where my opposite arm is straight forward (being sure to keep the hips forward) one where my arm is diagonal across my body and one with my arm straight up in the air. |

Geez, I'd think house paint would be worse *shudder* don't give her any ideas ... Yup Jen ... just oral surgery tooth extraction but not the simplest for a few reasons. In any case I feel SO much better but I'm clearly still recovering from the major infection and also the procedure itself (and it's that critical time post-op when the blood clot needs to really settle in place and the wound start to cleanly close over it). My friend Jim from LA is staying here with me for a few months and he is a fellow animal lover and was a huge help (as in, did most of it while I "helped.") |

Asalzwed - 2012-09-28 1 Oh, I know. I was in a hurry and did not complete my thought. I have used my short legs as an excuse, but they really shouldn't be. I wasn't suggesting that I run like anyone other than myself, but that perhaps the way I have the potential to run is better, faster, more efficient than the way I am currently doing it. I think there is a lot of misunderstanding in the world of "running form." Running lots, doing supplemental strengthening and some stretching will make you a better, more complete runner. |
