I am working on having a good base averaging most months 75-80 miles. Last month was a drop cause I irritated toe peroneals but so far rebuilding higher mileage isn't an issue.QueenZipp - 2013-05-16 11:33 AM Asalzwed - 2013-05-16 12:15 PM Yes, I have been running since about 2005. Probably have done a dozen 10K's, half a dozen HM. I hate doing stand alone 5K's cause I am too cheap to spend that much money on a race entry to have a 5K run. QueenZipp - 2013-05-16 6:18 AM bcraht - 2013-05-15 10:03 PM Thank you!!!! I seemed to have a mental block every time I tried to rearrange the days!
ETA: added the dates. Well, first I am glad you got the schedule part solved! Yay! Go Kirsten!!! I sometimes struggle with counting backwards with that stuff too. I run out of fingers... Second, can you tell me a little about your running history? I think you said you have been doing tri for quite some time (like 7 years or something?) Also, what are your goals for the marathon. And don't say "just to finish" if that's not true. I did do track in high school, but that was ancient history and I did the shot put, discus and mile walk. This is my first 26.2. I have been injured a few times mostly soft tissue stuff, torn hip flexors and torn gastroc.....The hip flexors were from a fall when I tripped in the pre dawn hours (blinded by headlights), the gastroc was levaqun induced tendinopathy. Spent 10 months in PT and rehabbing. My goal is to be in the 4:00-4:20 range which would put me at about a 9:20 pace....the course is moderately hilly. Late in the course there are about 4-5 miles of solid up and down (it's the part that the half marathon course has in the middle of the course) and it ends on a pretty steep down hill. Really 4 hours is probably pretty aggressive, but I may surprise myself there--the 4+ range is definitely realistic. Alright. So you have a very solid running history. THAT is great. What I first recommend (and I am being very lazy right now, so I didn't check to see what you are doing) but work on building up a solid base of running before you start the plan. Get used to getting out there as frequently as possible and slowly ramp up your mileage. You have a few months, which is a great position to be in. I wouldn't worry about speed or anything. Now, my comments on Higdon, and of course these are subjective. BUT what I felt, was that his plans were lacking. I don't think they have enough weekly mileage to support the long runs and I don't think the long runs in the beginning of the plan are long enough. The biggest things I noticed in doing a plan that addressed both of these things were exceptionally better recovery after the weekly long run, injury prevention and AMAZING post marathon recovery.
*Additional thoughts: How do you feel about that FRI/SAT combo of pace + long run? When I first started running, I had a difficult time with stacked workouts like that. Now I can handle them, and believe them to be a fantastic tool but it's something to think about. So definitely adjust the schedule to what works for YOU
Well, first, it seems that the injuries you have sustained were from outside forces, correct? Soooo, I think you should just start with building up your mileage and seeing how you do. And what I mean by that is how your body handles a ramp up in mileage and how you feel in terms of how much time you are willing to put into it. I think once you get an idea on what you can handle, then you can select a plan. Or even just modify the one you have by swapping a cross day for a short run, etc.

It was probably the most difficult workout I have done. Additionally, I made the huge mistake of eating jalapenos before the workout. I am a freak of nature and can pretty much eat ANYTHING before running EXCEPT jalapenos. I knew that, but I did it anyway. IDIOT. I had to RUN to the porta between rep 4 and 5 and do the 5th solo. So proud. Clearly, it's that you're the kind of person who needs to be tortured And it could have been worse ... you could have been using your phone to time and, err, dropped it ... and CAUGHT IT. Should we tell her that 93 sec/lap is only 6:12 mile pace? Guessing she's also picking up on some things that have helped me run faster. |

One of the instructors also runs the local water park. The park is only open over the summer. She offered me a job. Since I'm not teaching this summer I just might take her up on it. Oh yeah, you have to do that! It is one of my dream jobs. Absolutely!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBRJ6jQfap0 (Iapologize in advance for getting this ridiculous song stuck in your head today!) lovelovelove I was a lifeguard! In high school! We'd spend all day hanging out at the pool anyway; why not get paid for it? Some crazy crazy times. Go for it my dear mad polymath!
JM, thanks for the blast from the past. Flashback city.
The movie Breakfast Club is on cable this afternoon. Will fry up some hot wings and indulge with a beer or two. After that I will go to HULU and look up a couple of episodes of Magnum PI. Yanti, dear, this song is for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuN6gs0AJls
... Maybe this job will finance a bigger boat. The Cal 20 is seaworthy but is only big enough to make it to Hawaii. Need something in the 30 foot range. What is it about day dreams and mad schemes? Survival technique, per chance? |

Mom had a relapse so a night on her couch and then a night on my couch makes mememanateeme very tired and unwilling to work out because memesleepyheadme just wants to snooze. So I got her squared away before I leave for a conference in St. Louis where I fully plan to do my workouts like a good girl. Then I leave for vacation to Hells Canyon where I will be out of commission for almost 2 weeks. So if you don't hear from me rest assured I will be starting my first of many 17 oz Gin and Tonics by 10 am mountain time daily, taking photos of the Snake River Canyon, hiking, hanging with my peeps, celebrating a 50 year birthday (not mine) in Hell, thinking up a lot of Hell puns and generally goofing off and not thinking about work or work outs. Please don't judge me.Might squeeze in a run today.I'm so inspired by all of you. Wow. 11 in a lane. Still can't wrap my mind around that. I guess its good race training huh? Very sorry to hear about your mom, she will surely be in good hands. Conference - yuck. Awesome sounding vacation, yay!!! Gin and tonics, mmmm. We'd get along just fine (as long as it is Tanqueray, Bombay Sapphire or Bulldog gin). But seriously, that sounds like a very fun, beautiful trip. Live it the h*ll up (Hell's Canyon, get it?)! |
