No run focus, off Sunday, bike Monday and swim yesterday, all lowish intensity. Back to hard work tonight with interval training with my running club. On the menu tonight, hill repeats.

I should focus on running though from now on, as I have signed up for a 10k in October, well, a 10.5k as it’s a marathon I’ll be running as part of a team of 4.

Today is the last day of my Summer holiday but the first day won’t be too hard as I’lI be playing Golf at a charity event tomorrow. Did it last year and it was a lot of fun. Food and drink at every hole.

Woke up early (still struggling not to snooze a few times though) and was ready to run but then also needed to do some meal prep, so after some calculations, determined I really only had time for one of those activities, so I chose meal prep.

Cut up a bunch of stuff, roasted some veggies for salad, cut up some peaches (I LOVE peach season), hard boiled some eggs, and felt SO on top of things. Got to work with my salad and realized...I didn't bring any dressing. FAIL! I ended up just having the two hard boiled eggs, half an avocado, and some tomatoes from my salad for lunch, which should get me through until I get home.

Playing some vball this evening, so will luckily still get some movement in!

Finished up my double (triple??)...3000 yards in the pool this morning, 45' of sweet spot work on the bike and a really short run (like 1.5 miles) to get some run frequency in.

3K is a little high for sprint training but I'm working on some specific things (4/2/2 and 3/2/2 breathing, trying not to drop my lead shoulder when I turn to breathe) and want to get a little fatigued.  Did some fast stuff at the end which felt great.  Nailed the intervals on the bike through they were getting a little harder by the end.  Mailed in the run but that was the point, just getting easy miles in to build to five days a week so I don't flame out again on the run.

@Nicole:  nice work on food prep and I would have been starving with that lunch

@Nicole, Nice job on the meal prep. Other than leaving the dressing at home. At least you're sorted for the rest of the week

@Mike, Nice swim. 3k is about what I managed all month! Who says I need to swim more. 5 runs a week is a lot of running. Good luck, but be careful with your back, don't be afraid to pull that back a bit if you need too.

Don't forget, half the time a poor run in a tri isn't due to poor run training, it's over biking/poor nutrition etc.

@Nat, I think when your first day after summer holiday is a golf day, that's part of your summer holiday enjoy.

Me, 90 minute zwift last night as planned. Included some top of Z2/bottom of Z3 intervals. About what the book says is 70.3 race pace. Not sure I'm holding that for 90km and then being able to run, but a good hard workout. For each of the last 3 intervals I negotiated with myself to either cut it short, or turn down the resistance. Did neither and got it done.

60 minutes on the treadmill tonight, with some Z4 intervals mixed in, so will be a harder run.

Got in some bike time, finally. Total of two hours of easy riding that I split up on two bikes. I did 90’ on my tri bike and then 30’ on my cyclocross bike. I still have a traditional oly and HIM and then also a gravel HIM and 28mile gravel bike race on the schedule. Since I couldn’t remember when I last rode my cyclocross bike, I figured I needed to get it out soonish.

Yesterday was my first day with new personal trainer. It was leg day. I am actually sore. Like, needed the handicapped stall at work kind of sore I think more sore than after MiTi. Tomorrow is upper body.

@Nat—golf on the first day back? Sounds like a plan!

@Mile—def counts as a triple in my book! And five days a week of running is intense! I was doing four days a week Jan-April and I was worn out!

@Nicole—i hate it when I do something like forget the dressing! It makes me scramble at lunch. Good job on the meal prep though! I wish I could get on that bandwagon!

@Andrew—lunchtime swim!! I love lunch swims! Great job getting it done

Two hour run this morning. Second session with my trainer at lunch. It had better be upper body and core day. If it is leg day (as Tuesday was) I won’t be able to move! As it is, I’m still using the handicapped stall at work so I can get on/off the toilet!! I’m a bit sore from Tuesday and a bit embarrassed to say I scoffed at him when he said I would be. How can I be sore after 30’ of strength training?!??? I’m a multi-140.6 finisher!! Anyway…are a bit of humble pie over the last couple of days.

Hey, all.

@Gretchen:  I'm a mess after legs day.  I was sore until Sunday from a Thursday workout last week.  Hopefully today's will respond more positively LOL.

@Andrew:  5x/week isn't as intense as it might sound, as I have some really short sessions (under 2 miles) planned; I'm just going back to what worked a long time ago - frequency.  I'll adjust if it bothers me.

@Nathalie:  good luck on the 10K this weekend...you're probably going to crush it coming off your fitness from the Oly and a little bit of rest this week.

As mentioned, legs day today after a 5K run on the dreadmill, then a short (500 yard) cool down swim.  The weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend so I'm going to head out for a couple of long-ish rides just for fun.

@Gretchen, I know exactly where you're coming from with strength training. 10-15 minutes doing pushups/planks/lunges etc has me more sore/sweaty than the previous hour on the treadmill. Your pushing your body hard in a way it's not used too. It shouldn't be a surprise it's hard. Good job getting it done.

Having to decide how to split your ride between your 2 race bikes, is a very nice first world problem to have

@Mike, Hope the legs survived the run and strength combo.

@Me, an hour on the treadmill last night as planned. 1/2 hour of Z2, then 4x2.5' Z4 with 5' Z2 rests. Felt good. But as always not 100% confident with the treadmill pace being in the right zones.

Big 2 days coming up, Sunday is fathers day in this part of the world, so I'm sleeping in before getting breakfast in bed. So hard. Unfortunately that means I've got to fit a 2 hour ride, 90min ride and 90min run into Friday night/Saturday. It'll get done. But I will have earned that sleep in

Have a good weekend guys.

End of the month summary time. And I'm officially back on track after the sh1ty middle of the year.

Swim, x4, 3,000m, 1hr 20
Bike, x16, 16hr 45 All zwift so km means nothing
Run, x13, 91km, 12hr 7
Strength and Mobility, x3, 30min

So all up, about 30hr 15 minutes for the month. Not quite the biggest of the year, but within an hour of it.

Weight, down about 5 1/2 lbs during the month, which is about 24lbs for the year and 37 since my high point September last year. It also puts me lighter than I was at my last 140.6. Long way to go but happy with that progress.

Goals for next month, just keep following the plan as closely as I can. I'm making progress, long may it continue.

How's everyone else's months? (although I do realise I'm a day in the future for most)

@Andrew:  great job on your consistency at the weight loss - that is awesome; and Happy Father's Day in advance!

Not quite as sore as last week...did 90 minutes in the yoga oven this morning and it loosened up the rest.  Bike/run outdoor brick tomorrow.

ETA...monthly totals for August.  Not great volume but there was a taper week, a recovery week, and a vacation week so not unexpected to have a down month:

Swim: 5h 07m 11s - 12434.03 Yd
Bike: 8h 56m 55s - 166.49 Mi
Run: 6h 32m 30s - 34.38 Mi
Strength: 7h 41m
Hiking: 5h 07m

My YTD totals have me on pace for 150K yards, 3K miles, and 300 miles - I'll be happy to hit those totals.

Nice monthly totals guys! (despite taper and vacation, still very good Mike)

Gretchen, I see what you mean, how can 30 minutes of strength training leave you so sore? I never understood it but it means it’s working, right?

Golf went well on Thursday, although I woke up yesterday (Friday) with a sore knee. Nothing major but I am glad my 10k is not until Wednesday evening, I think I’ll skip the planned social 10k tomorrow, will go swimming instead, make the most of it while the lake is still warm enough.

The fact that my last tri which was supposed to be today was cancelled doesn’t feel too bad

August totals, including races

Swim 3h39m 8524m
Bike 11h45m33sec 194.4km
Run 12h12m14sec (would have been cool if I’d stopped my watch 2 seconds earlier once) 105.4km
Strength : not much, that’s my winter project, need to start doing this properly

Have a great weekend!

Solid months Mike and Andrew! I’ll post mine when I get home next week (visiting parents for the holiday). Yesterday I did 2600yds at the pool and then in the afternoon a three hour ride on the trails near my parents house.

Today I’m going swimming with my mom at her pool. It will make me appreciate the facility I swim at.

Happy Father’s Day, Andrew!!

Happy weekend all.  Got in a nice workout yesterday with about 23 miles outdoors in perfect biking weather, then after a quick shirt and shoe change did a couple of miles in Z2 running.  Both felt great.

I see Andrew has been busy on the trainer on Zwift.

Thanks for asking. It’s not this weekend but on Wednesday evening. Just as well, my right knee is a little sore, not sure what it is. So I skipped my run today and went swimming for an hour instead. Don’t want to risk it developing into something more serious before Wednesday.

Have a great weekend!

@Mike, Nice job on your brick workout. That's great news everything feels good. Yup, definitely a big week on Zwift, and the treadmill too for that matter. Nicely balanced month, especially with a taper and vacation thrown in.

@Gretchen, Enjoy the different to usual lap pool. And of course spending time with your Mum.

@Nathalie, Sounds like a good thing your 10k isn't till Wednesday. Hopefully your knee will be feeling better by then. Congrats on a good, solid month too.

I finished the week off almost as planned, I was a swim on Friday short though (went to swim to discover the pool was hosting a high school underwater hockey tournament for 3 days, no lanes available). 2 hours on zwift with some VO2max intervals Friday night, Did not do a double on Saturday as planned, so 90 min run Saturday night, and 90 min easy zwift ride Sunday night after Fathers day was over.

For the week

Swim, x1, 21min
Bike, x3, 5hr (all zwift)
Run, x3, 3hr 30min (all treadmill)
S/M, 0. And my legs are feeling it. Need to stretch this week.

And because I know you've all become closet fans (looking at you Nat), the regular season for the Warriors ended this weekend, had a loss because we rested 1/2 the team. Finished with 4th place which means we get at least 2 playoff games. Saturday we play the 1 seed, the winner goes to the last 4, loser plays the winner of 4v8 for a place in the final 4 next week. 3 wins away from a championship.

So no more zwifting while watching games. Playoffs demand more attention than that.

Yeah! Go Warriors!
Hockey season starts in a couple of weeks, can’t wait! I mean the Swedish hockey league, the Lakers have already played (and won) a couple of games in the European Champions League but I am not very interested in that league.

50k ride in the beautiful late Summer weather we are having on Saturday and 2k OWS on Sunday. Mostly low intensity with some Z3 efforts when I got bored.

Nice solid week Andrew (other than swimming but it’s not your fault. Under water hockey sounds brutal)
Weekly numbers then
S x2 1h39 3143m
B x3 4h00 89.18k
R x1 1h25 8.24k (hills repeat with my club)

Didn’t get to the pool on Saturday. I don’t know if it was Thursday’s training session, or the 90’ of wrestling with two teenage boys, but I woke Ip on Saturday morning with an extremely sore right bicep. One sided suggests maybe it was the wrestling. (I won, btw…two pins…and I refuse to discuss weight class differences. :D ).

Yesterday the arm felt better, so I did my planned brick 25 mi bike, 5 mi run before spending the day setting up a slack line obstacle course for my nephews. Watching them try to climb an unteathered rope ladder was hilarious…until I tried it!

Tell me more about the wrestling with 2 teenage boys!

My son (19) finally beat me for the first time this Summer. He’s been bigger and stronger than me for a few years but my superior technique (did judo when I was a kid) always prevailed until now. Oh well, I guess it’s good for his self confidence that he (finally) can wrestle down his mother! (it was a little embarrassing I guess)

Don’t worry, we only wrestle down teenage boys we are related to (well, in my case anyway)

Yes…I’m with Nat…I only wrestle teenage boys I’m related to! I still outweigh these boys by a bit (one is a string bean and the other is 13…hasn’t quite hit his growth spurt yet), but I also have a good bit of grappling experience from my days in Tae Kwok Do (not a grappling sport, but we dabbled around in others) and growing up with two brothers in wrestling.

Well I'll stick to my premise of not angering women in my orbit.  Or anyone's orbit.

Great three days of training...two really solid outdoor rides, a brick-ish run and a long walk with the wife (see the above ^^^ ), plus a bunch of core work keeping everything together.  Up a 6 AM tomorrow in the Pain Cave.

I grew up the youngest in my extended family and my "family" of my mom's friends and their kids and routinely got wrestled down handily.  Then I got to be 6'3" 200+ pounds.  LOL
