Bicycle Chef will NOT be touching any of my bikes ever again. Besides, the owner likes Campy, and that's reason enough to stay the hell out of there.
(Remember the sucky triathlon club party earlier this year, where he ran out of food? Yeah, you remember that I'm sure LOL).
Last night, I rode over to The Blondes' crib for an evening recreational ride, and shortly before we got to the Slack State ped bridge to get on the river trail, my chain was going wild... and I'd just replaced the chain and cassette, but it was shifting randomly and acting goofy. To make a long story short, I had a partially broken link - the same one the owner of the shop had taken out to change out the derailleur a month ago - instead of using the master link that comes with a SRAM chain.
Well, the chain was ruined. I had to buy a new one at East Sac Bikes, which was about 5 minutes from where we were, and fortunately still open. Plus the Blonde likes the store as they have an older black lab - Jackson - as their mascot. The wrencher told me that "its OK to break chains back when bikes were 5-6 speed cassettes, but these 9-10 speed chains don't handle having a link taken out very well. In fact, he should have given you a new chain when he accidentally broke this one not paying attention."
BTW, its a little more expensive at times, but if you've got Shimano components don't swap them out for SRAM (at least for road stuff). The Shimano chain does work better than the SRAM one did.
Scott, thanks for the heads up. I put Ultegra cranks, chain and rear derailleur on my tri bike, but got a deal on a SRAM cassette. LBS said there should be no compatibility issues. Didn't have any for the HIM. Shifted smooth as butter. Of course, this bike shop seems to know what they're doing...
Sorry to hear about your hassle...
