Expert 1146![]() ![]() ![]() Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSEDThanks everyone for all the motivation you are sending my way! Rebecca - for a bike computer that works on a trainer. I have a cateye strada double wireless. It attaches on to your back chainstay and crank so that it will calculate distance, speed and cadence. It costs about $100, however there is a wired option that is about 1/2 (maybe more than 1/2) the price. I have (or my husband has) had to monkey around with it quite a bit to make sure that the sensors are reading. I am sure that there are other options as well. |

I think I did something wrong as my cadence is not working. I looked the instructions and think I just put the sensor too far from the magneto, but since I'm not riding outside that much sin't a big deal. I believe the price was 49 + taxes, I'm happy with it. |

The cateye sensor is very sensative. Make sure the button sensor is as close as possible to the pickup or else it won't read the cadence. Had this problem on Thursday and we had to move the sensor back as it had moved over time. Otherwise it is a great contraption. |

And I have this big blue field over on the left. Help areas not helful Anyway I planned to run 10 miles today and I only ran 5 because of my foot pain. I have a half marathon next Sunday. I hope I can figure out how to wrap it or something. Bummer. |

Champion 7558![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSEDRobin, Congrats on the big running week! It is fun breaking new ground. Kim, It's hard to really equate trainer miles with road miles. I assume 17 mph for my trainer rides and I hope to be surprised when I finally get outside this spring to think I underestimated the pace (and therefore distance). I have a Cateye Strada mounted on the chainstay to get rear-wheel speed and cadence. (Cadence isn't picking up right now, but I'm not worried about it.) I do think my trainer is on it's last gasp. A couple years ago, it was all I could do to ride 15-16 mph. After one ride, I bent down to remove my shoe, lost my balance, and put my hand on the resistance unit to prevent a fall, and it was piping hot! This week, after a 20 mph ride (I still assume 17), it was barely warm which tells me it's not converting a lot of kinetic energy (wheel speed) into thermal energy (heat). Pick a resistance and gear setting that lets you work whatever effort you need (Z2). In my case, it's just whatever gear. Steph, congrats on the bike (I hope I got the right name attached to the new bike). |

Every once in a while my cadence stops working, then I realize that I have bumped the sensor.... That thing has to be just short of touching for it to work right... I am talking like 1/4" or so. |

Expert 961![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Illinois _ Chicago area | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSEDThis discussion on trainer mph and miles is really interesting to me. For distance I thought that since the sensor is picking up wheel rotation that one wheel around would be the same on the road or in the trainer. Obviously mph verse effort will be variable depending on the how you you set the resistance. Learning new stuff... always good. As far as running goes.... Did my first run since last sunday's run in which I put the final blow to a nagging quad pull. I've been stretching etc. and decided to do the 10k that was planned for today. Actually the marathon training was supposed to be a 12 mile run. Originally was going to do the course twice, but decided against that. Didn't want to push it. I also purposely did not take a timing chip so that I wouldn't "race". Wanted to take it slow and easy so I didn't make things worse. Well...quad is still bugging me. Time to go see my miracle worker. A chiropractor who is certified in ART. Haven't gone in as of yet because to see him is a shlep and a half. Translation: He's in the city (South loop for those of you familiar with Chicago) and I'm in the north suburbs. Depending on traffic it can take anywhere from 25 minutes to well over an hour to get there. Only good thing is he has his own parking. But he is the best around and it's time to get serious about this. I'm heading into the intense milage part of the training and I can't be down with an injury. UGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!! This sucks. |

I lived in Chicago from 91 to 98 and I'm still amazed to see ANYTHING in the south loop! The printers row and south loop areas were just kind of becoming interesting when I left. I lived in the city the entire time... loved living on the lake front. |

If you nap, you get two doses. I've heard lots about how long a nap is best, I think any nap is better than no nap, but I don't limit them. I sleep because I know I don't perform well when I don't. |

I've been slammed at work the last week and it's good to see activity in the forum, but I didn't see a lot of inspire activity over the last week. What do we need to do to make the mentor group a success? Are we meeting your needs? (I'm especially looking for some of the new athletes to tell the experienced people what you want us to do to help.) I'm still going to try getting to everyone's logs a couple more times this week. Some are looking pretty...blank... These next few weeks are what turns this into a lifestyle. |

What helps me is seeing everyone's posts on what they have accomplished with their workouts because I don't want to be the one lagging behind plus then I get excited for them which gets me excited for me. What also helps me out is when I'm called out on my training log (Thanks McFuzz) when I don't have much there. I need that little kick in the butt sometimes and I don't take offense. I didn't realize that the mentor group was halfway done!!! Oh no!!! What am I going to do?! Well that makes me sad. |
