Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I am not an expert, but I would say to try and get a bit more rotation on both sides so that you can get more extension out to the front with both hands. You will be more aero, and you will get a slightly longer pull by enlongating your body with the additional extension. |

I thought you looked really relaxed and comfortable in the water, which is great. The 2 things that stuck out as areas to improve upon were (1) sinking hips and (2) dropping your arm too quickly (staying long and streamlined). I've been doing catch up drills myself to work on staying long, and they really seem to be helping. Kelly has looked at lots of videos, so I'd be curious as to what she has to say. What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses in your stroke? |

Kelly said to ask you about Zoots, because I'm interested in getting a pair for racing. Any particular model you'd recommend? I'm focusing on oly and HIM this season. Neutral runner......only been at it for 2 years....small frame. I looked at the Zoot website yesterday and several models seemed to fit the bill. |

Thanks Jen, that's a good question and one I hadn't thought about. I would say my strength to me is like you say, I am relatively comfortable in the water and smooth (it's foreign to me when I read threads about people that panic in the water for some reason; never enters my head I guess). My weakness is I'm slow . I don't think I have any power in my stroke, honestly. My arms just turn over and then the next one comes around and keep repeating. |

I just read the responses to your vid in Tri Talk. Lots of good info there. Some of them said what I said about staying long - or gliding. Your arms turn over too quickly, so you aren't getting a full stroke. That's probably why you don't feel you have any power. It's not that you don't have any, but you could have a lot more. |

I think its a catch issue actually. That is using your pull to actually catch the water and propel yourself forward. |

You don't do open turns in open water, or push off a wall, lot's of things are different but not an excuse to not train like a proper swimmer. Flip turns are also useful when swimming with other people, they let you maintain your pace so you don't mess with the people behind you. |

Between being sick and my new asthma medication my HR is sky high whenever I do anything so my paces are slow. Its frustrating. I know my body is still recovering but I feel like being sick for a week was a HUGE step backwards. I'm also a big numbers person, so seeing my pace and power numbers go in the wrong direction is not fun. |

Stressing isn't going to get you better quicker and might prolong the issue. You know you have the base so your body will bounce back. You know how to HTFU and put the work in, so you'll make sure you're ready for racing come that time. I know this isn't very triathlete but roll with the punches on this one and focus on getting better. |

I agree with you, Scott, but I'm guessing you'd feel every bit as stressed as Kelly's feeling right now if your training were messed up for two weeks You're just as structured as she is about her training. That said, I agree that you have to roll with the punches, Kelly. I know it's hard, but go with it. Your asthma medication is most definitely causing your heart rate to remain elevated (I'm an asthmatic, too; remember?). Stick with it and your body will adjust to the medication. Maybe you should ditch the heart rate monitor while you're adjusting to the new inhaler. What did they put you on? Advair? That stuff works really, really well if taken as recommended. |

I have the Vision minis and they are tiny I can barely fit past my wrist on them. I was not happy with them at all very hard position to hold and lots oof shoulder stress. I am 6'0 and run my regular bars at 290 mm though. |

Kelly, you'll be ok. It may take your body a week or so to catch up to where it's supposed to be by the schedule but you have the work ethic to get there. So listen to the docs.
