If I go slow, is it still a TT? Just a slow one? I don't feel like going balls to the wall for 15 minutes... blech. If I had them ... I'd not put my balls on the wall. Seems unsanitary. Interestingly, the "ball's" in the expression "balls to the wall" are not anatomical testicles. Balls refers to the knobs on aviation throttles that are usually spherical. "Balls to the wall" is a rhyming colloquialism which means throttles fully forward thus full throttle. The expression has, no doubt, been adopted widely outside of the aviation field because of its suggestive name, but testicles to the wall is nonsensical and confusing. Haha. You said `knobs' ... |

Also a possible origin in locomotives where a silimlar st up was smployed.
With old steam engines, the term was "balls out". Ah Yes I have heard that phrase used as well and I always wondered about how... um... uncomfortable that would be.
Explain "balls deep". It can't possibly mean the obvious. Bathyspheres! Edited by trinnas 2012-07-17 3:08 PM |

Explain "balls deep". It can't possibly mean the obvious. Nope that is what it means. `Going balls deep' actually was first traced back to the '30s and is a euphemism for exercising derived from swimmers who would jump into a lake with a ball over their head and submerge themselves to the ball and then try to kick back up over and over. Kind of like an old-time crossfit in a pool. Next time you go to crossfit it'd be fitting to tell everybody you can't wait to go balls deep. And then explain it when they feign horror. |

With old steam engines, the term was "balls out". Hm... "Balls out" in reference to a steam engine makes less sense as an all out effort . A ball governor is a regulator that would relieve steam the faster the device spins. The centrifugal force conteracts the force of gravity. The faster the governor spins the more outward the balls swing. The position of the regulator balls would cause a valve to release steam to limit the pressure in the boiler. The balls out would be the position at maximum speed and the governor would act the most to relieve the steam pressure in the boiler (and thus reduce speed). In steam boat races, an unsafe tactic was to wire the ball governor down so that it would not regulate the steam pressure. This would be allow the boiler to build even higher steam pressure. This was extremely dangerous and there was a real chance of blowing up the boiler. So balls held down would be an even more aggressive state than balls out. Regulating boiler safety was one of the reasons the American Society of Mechanical Engineers came into being. |

Sensei![]() | ![]() So I only put one ball to the wall in my swim. Kept the other in reserve... So my T-pace is 1:43/100. I swear, 6 years of self swim training for triathlon, and I'm STILL at 1:40/100 plus or minus 5 seconds. I was swimming 1:40 6 years ago, and swimming 1:40 now (for anything over 1000 meters) I guess if I want to get faster, I need lessons - or swim more. |

Party Pooper!! Also a possible origin in locomotives where a silimlar st up was smployed.
With old steam engines, the term was "balls out". But which way did they move the leaver to accelerate? If it was outward than the statement would be correct.
Completely non related, but made me think of it. A gamer might understand. I played SO much 007 Goldeneye on Nintendo, that I have to swap my Y-axis on every other FPS from that point forward. If there is ever a game that doesn't allow it? I'm screwed. |

I thought tri talk was verboten in TAN? Bunch of rule breakers in here! I'm in the mood to break some rules... |
