All these comments about wrestling family members reminds me of an instagram reel I saw the other day

"I don't exercise for the health or fitness benefits, I exercise to physically dominate my children for as long as possible. I want them 28 years old and terrified of losing to me in a footrace."

That definitely applies to me.

Started the week with Monday rest day.

I did a 10 minute warm up on the treadmill, and 15 minutes doing a bodyweight and stretching routine, followed with a soak in the spa. The legs needed it.

Nice week Nathalie. But I feel like your hockey season only ended like a week ago... this year is travelling too fast.

Gretchen, Its unlike you to skip anything so I assume the arm was feeling terrible. Glad that a bit of rest and it's passed.

Mike, Nice work with 3 good days in a row.

Good morning everyone, from a newly-minted 39 year old. Of course, I have entered by 39th year sick but such is life. Hoping to come through it pretty quickly so I can enact my plan!

Speaking of my plan, it is not fully finalized but I have some solid goals and a monthly tracker for a lot of the items. I'm going to use my sick day today to try to finalize some stuff so I can share it with you all

Happy belated Father's Day, Andrew! Hopefully you can still crush your children in a foot race for many years to come!

What's a brick-ish run Mike? Practicing for a long T2?

Started the week with a nice outdoor ride after work. 5k w/u 3 x 5k at sprint pace (which is now 32km/h) with a couple of minute spinning in between and 5k transport home.

Rest day today, only 20 minutes of strength and mobility stuff.

Well considering my history...

It's running with legs fatigued off the bike without worrying about speeding through transition, plus I changed clothes and stretched a little to get my back to loosen up, something I wish I had time to do during a race but gotta be speedy in the zone.

10k race tomorrow. The knee is still a bit sore but I am pretty sure it’s nothing (we’ll know for sure after the race).

Time to beat is 2018 Nat’s : 52:35 so I need to keep an average pace of around 5:10 per km / 8:19 per mile. Sounds tough but not impossible.

@Mike and Andrew—I felt so bad for my Dad (75yo) this weekend, when both boys were trash taking how he wouldn’t even try to do the obstacle course. I can distinctly remember when BOTH of my brothers challenged my dad to footraces in their teens and both got their butts handed to them. I think this is simply a rite of passage with men and their sons (or grandsons, in this case). I could just see my dad itching to try it, but he wasn’t sure he could do it—too proud to fail in front of the boys.

For me—today was an hour interval run this morning and then an hour of strength training this afternoon. I did upper body before my session with my pt. When asked how I get last week after our session, I reported I had to use the handicapped stall to get down on the toilet last week for two days. He upped the weight on every exercise. I foresee more grab bars in my future! Seasion felt good though.

They may have been impressed if he tried, I am sure even young boys understand that you get weaker as you get older (and to them he is oooooold).
I know I would have tried, at any age (and failed with pride). Reminds me of an interview I saw of a Swedish hockey player who recalled how his grand mother used to play in goal when he was playing street hockey with his mates growing up. That’s me. Can’t wait for my son’s future kids to ask me to do that.

Does your PT specialise in legs only? If not, why do upper body before a session? It’s like vacuuming before the cleaner comes to do your house.

Race day, start at 6pm Central European time. Excited! I can’t wait to take that last record held by 2018 Nat

@Nicole-happy birthday (maybe a bit late!)

@Nat—i do two trainer sessions a week, right now. He guides me through legs one day and upper body the other. I want full body twice a week, so I figured I’d do whichever he doesn’t cover beforehand as my warmup.

^^might have been a dumb plan, though. I’ve actually landed myself in the hospital. About an hour after dinner last night I had an episode of serious chest pain and nausea. It was so bad I had my wife call an ambulance and we got to the hospital at about 7:30pm. It is now 2:15 and I’ve been admitted, I’ll be here at least until Thursday. They want to do a stress test, which requires a 12 hr fast. And apparently I can’t be trusted to not eat. They don’t think I had a heart attack but my lab readings are all over the place. I could have had a heart attack, or I could be dehydrated, or I could simply be recovering from hard training. So…fun times!

OMG Gretchen! Hope it's not serious, at least they're keeping an eye on you.

And no, I don't think you can be trusted not to eat.

Keep us posted! (because of course your priority is to keep a small group of internet people you've never met updated)

Ha! Nat, that made me laugh (which I needed). So far, I’m just a pin cushion, with blood draws every 2 hours. No news yet.

OMG - Gretchen!!!  I hope you're OK.  Yes what Nat said keep your make-believe-online-family updated.  Hoping it's nothing serious and just a reaction to training.  Sending you healing vibes.

@Nathalie - good luck tonight kicking 2018 Nat's azz!!

Well yesterday I was supposed to get up and hit the pain cave at 6 AM but I slept terribly and decided to take a day off.  This morning nailed a 2000 yard swim session and some strength work and I'll have a lunchtime bike/run session indoors (it's 100 degrees here - I'll run in the heat but that's nuts).  Also thinking about running a 5K the weekend before my sprint as some speed work on the run but I have until the day of to decide so I'll see what the weather (not going to spend $50+ USD to run in the rain or anything).

ETA:  speaking of heat...left my car outside yesterday with my swim bag in the back, which put the coup de grace on one of my goggles that was getting a little old anyway; I wear TYR Nest Pro goggles (gasket seals outside the eye socket) and the gaskets melted a little and were now wearing like the Speedo socket rockets (which seal inside the eye socket), which of course didn't work so I spent the first few lengths with water in my goggles (right side only) before I changed them.

Mission accomplished, new 10k PR 51:22 (1:13 minutes faster than 2018 Nat).

Next stop: under 50 minutes, this is a job for 2024 Nat.

Great job, Nathalie.  Way to finish off the year!  Don't forget to RR so 2024 Nat knows how 2023 Nat did it.

10Ks are the race of truth for me...it's beyond the "how much pain you're willing to endure" of a 5K but you're still moving at a pretty good clip for close to an hour, and you need to hydrate at least a little so you have to figure that out as well.

Great job Nat!!!

@mike—aorry to hear about the goggles, but at least they were an old pair!

I’m still at the hospital. They are leaning toward the pain being from heartburn (wtf?!?) and then all the weird labs being from training stress. They did an echo, ekg, and cardiac stress test and if those results are examined without any knowledge of the reported chest pain, everything looks aces (I won the treadmill test—ran until they ran out of inclines and the leads fell off—friction? Sweat? They admitted defeat?). So…they want my GI doc to do an endoscopy to see if I have severe GERD (acid reflux) being masked by my daily dose of Prilosec. Hoping to gtfo of here soon. I was promised an espresso at 8:30am and still haven’t gotten it (it. 2pm). Looks like y’all stuck with me for a while longer! ??

That's great, great news, Gretchen.

And way to slay the stress test and inflict all sorts of collateral damage.  That's how we roll around here!

ETA:  you must be the worst ER patient ever LOL

Holy Sh1t Gretchen. I did not expect to see that.

I'm glad to hear that it looks like you're in the clear, and congratulations on winning the stress test. But wow, that is scary stuff. Good choice from you and the wife to go to the Drs and not ignore it and hope for the best. A false alarm in this case, but you were in the best place to be if it wasn't.

Doesn't get much more in the clear than Drs giving you permission to race an Oly distance tri in a few days. So that is a great sign. Hope by the time you post next you're in the clear and back at home.

But like mike said, keep your imaginary internet family posted!

Great job, and a really good time.

2024 Nat is going to have a harder time setting PBs everywhere than 2023 Nat did. But I look forward to seeing it.
