Just got in from about an 11 mile run I think 17.5K and it is a bad thing to not run for 2 weeks then go this distance lol. My calve is killing me. I need that massage must remember to call tomorrow. But I did get it done. It was slow but I finished it.

MrsUSMC - 2008-04-06 8:36 AM Oh Erin that sux the big one. Manatees...as soon as I hit "submit" I'm walking out the door for my first *race* of the season. As much as it pains me to do it, I'm walking today instead of attempting to do any running; however, I am going since I know you'd all virtually kick me in the azz if I didn't! LOL. I'll post my little RR when I get home. Wish me luck - I have a sore throat.

SUPER CONGRATULATIONS TO TERRI THE AMAZING ATHLETE FOR FINISHING HER FIRST RACE!!!

Here's the link to her race report:

Congratulations, Terri! Everyone, you need to read her race report right now. It's really amazing.

Sorry I flaked off the forum this weekend. It had nothing to do with my race woes -- my parents were in town and I just haven't been around.

I did end up doing a race on Saturday -- a 10k in Napa. A good friend of mine suggested I come up and run it with him when he heard my triathlon was cancelled, and I'm so, so grateful he recommended it. Running a race was the very best thing I could do for my spirits, in more ways than one. I felt a lot better about everything after the race (partly because I did well, but mostly because I put my self pity aside and got out there and did something). Then last night I went out with my parents and a big group of friends and got my drink on. *g*

Anyway, my race report is here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

Thanks for all the support, gang. It helped a lot to hear from you all. One of the most frustrating things about the race being cancelled was how many friends (non-athletes) said I must be relieved. Um, yeah. Relieved that I worked my a$$ off for a race that is never happening. Sure. But you guys, obviously, knew exactly what I was going through, and that helped so much.

I haven't figured out what I'm doing next. There's just no way I can fit another oly into my schedule until June 1, and to be honest, I'm not sure I want to. But I'll be talking more about that in my logs in the next few days. I just wanted to stop by here and say you guys are the greatest, because you totally are.

WONDERFUL! I left an inspire in your blog not sure if you wanted comments on your RR (which is EXCELLENT and I'm so glad you did the race, and you did *so* well) ... I am really bummed about your Oly ... that is just terrible ... there really isn't any upside, except that you could really sharpen your training and speed for a later Oly. See if there's a sprint you could do in the meanwhile as a tune-up.

Thank you for the race feedback, Yanti! I am always a fan of gushing. *g*

It's true, there's not really any "look on the bright side" to the race cancellation, but what are you gonna do, right? I'd already signed up for a sprint in May, so I've still got races planned.

Man, you guys are making me *cry.* It's been a *tough week* but watching you guys do amazing things ... Shawn gutting out his 17K ... Terri finishing her first recent race ... Erin rising above terrible disappointment with grace and pulling off a marvelous 10K ...

Thank you, thank you SO MUCH.

You all give me so much hope.

I don't check in as often as I'd like, but my heart sings every time I do.

Typical game we lost. My team is like 3 people that played growing up and 18 that are trying to play at over 30. It is always fun though that is what we are all about just friends that play some ball together. Except when my competitive side comes out then my team doesn't really like me cause I yell at them

Good morning everyone!  I hope the week is off to a good start with you all. I haven't done my scheduled run yet due to multiple factors...but by nightfall I will have done that or a trainer ride.  I will get that pink square in the calendar no matter what!  I am fighting a cold and tired and it is pouring rain, so I have a lot of challenges to work through.  None that are all that bad.  Plus we got a new computer which is super fast, hopefully allowing me to do a lot more inspiring!  You all have a great day, ok???

You're doing great keeping up with the training, Leslie. I don't know how you folks with kids manage it!

I'm having a pretty good week so far. I'm definitely taking it easy -- even if I didn't do the oly, I decided to make this a recovery week anyway, since I finished three months of intense training. Plus, the pool at my gym is closed, so that gives me a great excuse to take a break. I'm planning to do a race called "The Shortest Triathlon Ever" on Saturday. They aren't joking: It's a 100y swim, 2.5-mile bike, 1.2-mile run. The winner finished in under 17 minutes last year. Ha!

I think I'm leaning toward not training for another oly any time soon and focusing on running instead. I just spent close to an hour mapping out run routes and putting together a training plan in Excel -- yep, I'd say pretty excited about the running thing. I still have a sprint tri in a month, so I'll be keeping up with my biking and swimming, but using it more for cross-training. I still haven't made up my mind for sure, but this feels right.

Does anyone have a favorite half marathon training plan? Also, I'm seriously thinking about doing my first half on May 31 and a second one on July 20. That seems like plenty of time between races, but is it possibly over-ambitious? I'm thinking about using the Hal Higdon novice plan for the first race, and then jumping into the intermediate plan for the second race.

Sounds great, Erin. Whatever keeps you happy and in the game. Running is very beautiful and pure.

Hal Higdon is great. Does the novice plan involve a quick bump in the mileage you are already doing or not? If it does, there are other plans I can think of ...

Segue to Intermediate should be fine, as well, again if it doesn't increase total weekly mileage too much.

Thanks, Yanti! I'd have to start a couple weeks into the novice plan, but it's not a big jump from where I'm at now -- weekly mileage starts off at 16-17 miles with long runs of 7-8 miles, which is almost exactly where I ended my oly plan (a little under, actually). Same with the intermediate plan, although that one includes some speedwork, which I'm a little iffy on. But I don't have to decide that until June.

The only way I've ever been able to do two-a-day workouts is to do them both after work, which makes for a very, very late night. I've managed exactly one morning workout this year. So basically, good luck! And let me know if you figure out the secret.

So the thread in the main tri forum about athenas/clydes reminded me of a question I have. (I'm asking it here, because obviously this can be a delicate topic, and I feel safer talking about it with you guys.)

The next tri I'm doing has an athena category, which I signed up for in part because -- and I'm a little ashamed to admit this -- there were only, like, three women in it last year, so I thought it'd be fun to maybe have a chance to podium. (Just to be clear, I'm not saying I'd have an easier time against other athenas, but the law of averages says I'd have a much higher chance of placing third out of four women than third out of, say, 100 women. Hee.) The problem is that I don't know if I fit the "spirit" of athena. I'm 5'8", 165 pounds, so I definitely meet the technical criteria. But I'm really not a big girl, and, more importantly, I really don't think my weight has any negative effect on my performance. I suck at swimming because I suck, and I'm not good at biking because I don't bike enough, and I'm decent at running.

Is it wrong of me to race as an athena? Should I switch to age group for the race?
