I got in my last 100 miler today and got run off the road in the process, nice road rash. Remember to becareful out there. The hardest part of Ironman, is just getting to the starting line. On another note, what a difference a year makes. July 2009
July 2008
**Note** All my 09 swims include rest intervals, 08 did not. All my 09 runs include a 5 min warm up and 5 mins of walking for cool down. |

Master 1485 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Tri Sam - 2009-08-02 9:52 PM Reading all of these impressive workouts is inspiring. Sorry about the rainouts to those who had to deal with that. I did the same thing at Steelhead (5:13:04). I was a great "training race". Today, I am right back into training with a long swim (5000) and a spin on the bike to keep my legs flushed out. I hope everyone has a great day!Finished Steelhead Ironman 70.3 about the way I expected to. It was a solid, yet controlled effort. All my pieces and parts held together ok for the most part. I had some issues with my right hip and left foot around 12.5 miles of the run, but I expected this possiblity much sooner, so it was a good deal. I still don't know what the official results are since they have not been posted on the website, but if you are curious, my UNofficial finish time was 5:05:39. I expected to be between 5 and 5.5 hours, so this was good. I didn't try to crush the course so that I could recover relatively quickly and still have a solid race-like workout. One more LONG ride and LONG run, a couple LONG swims, and the rest is filler and rest. Gettin' closer baby! My bike's going in for a tune-up tomorrow. Peace, Tri Sam |

Even a HIM in 5 hours (while holding back) - very impressive. That's fantastic for the serious IM athletes living the life - wish I were there. |

What century did you do? I did Covington this past weekend and was wondering what the course was like compared to Lou. |

Veteran 269 Macon, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I did the Covington Century this weekend and my Garmin said it was 6100 feet of climbing, which seems like alot more than it was. I think IMLOU is around that 6000 feet mark - I have talked to a few people that have done Covinton and IMLOU and they all said that the LOU couse has more hills. |

Met many athletes using that as prep for IM-Lou. My thought is that if you take Covington and add about three larger, longer climbs and a few more rollers, it would equal Louisville. (isn't it crazy how they advertise Covington as a flat, fast course?) So ... take Covington, add about 10 degrees to the heat, take away the rest at the water stops, add a few rollers and a few climbs, warm up with a dip in the Ohio and cool down with a marathon ... that's IM-Lou. Can't wait. |

I read that there's some flooding in and around the Univ of Louisville, so some of our run course may be under water. Any locals have any news? I always heard that the Ohio was okay for swimming unless heavy rain causes a sewer release into the river upstream. Guess it's safe to assume the pipes are overflowing today. I know it will be well downstream in three weeks, so nothing to worry about - correct? |

Extreme Veteran 510 Louisville KY | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread This has been a tough year for louisville, hurricane Ike blew through during Ryder Cup week, then we had an ice storm that shutdown the whole state, now a major flood. We had about 6 inches in one hour, then another round of storms with pretty good wind a few hours later, they are predicting some more overnight. The main library basement was flooded that had brand new books for a new branch, Uof L had major flooding to about 20 buildings, Churchill Downs was hit horses needed moving, etc. When we get about two weeks out I'll start giving out water quality info like I did last year. It will take about week to get the river settled down if we don't get anymore rain. So keep training folks, concentrate on what you can control, and don't worry about what you can't! |

I was also using it as a training race. I blew a couple of tubes on the bike which, I suppose, was a good thing in that it gave me some experience in dealing with adversity during the race. I just went out on the bike for an hour and am feeling great. This week was a "slow" week (11 hours) according to my training plan anyway so it'll be nice to have some time to get back to it. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread TIM- I'm sorry about the weather in Louisville. However, thanks for keeping us all posted and keeping a positive perspective. I'll look forward to the water quality reports. JOSH- Great Job at Steelhead. I'm glad it was a positive experience for you even though you had tire issues. It sounds like you handled it well. EVERYONE WHO IS FEELING A BIT...RIPE- I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought maybe I was just being weak-minded when thoughts of "Sheesh!" crept in. I love the training and the Ironman is a helluva' payoff, but there are certainly times when I just think, "Man, this is a LONG freakin' way." Staying Positive- Had a great 2.4 mile swim in our lake today and I'm looking forward to riding 100 miles tomorrow. Good stuff. I love this sport! Keep it up folks!!! Peace, ~Sam |

I'm still on the partially capable team.........tried to run two miles last night after a ride and my calf is still showing signs of soreness!! I am taking another full week of from running and going to be doing more overmileage bike rides and hope that I'll be O.K. come race day.........looks like a 1 week IM taper for me......yikes! Anyone else have any thoughts on how to keep things together while injured this late in the game? I was able to run 13.1+ at camp on July 25th and then the couple of miles last night.....I think if I can get the calf healed before race day, I should be able to suffer out to a decent IM marathon....
