That definitely sums up this year for me.  Glad you're OK.  Have been too many accidents lately.

Tri Sam - 2009-08-02 9:52 PM Reading all of these impressive workouts is inspiring.  Sorry about the rainouts to those who had to deal with that.
Finished Steelhead Ironman 70.3 about the way I expected to.  It was a solid, yet controlled effort.  All my pieces and parts held together ok for the most part.  I had some issues with my right hip and left foot around 12.5 miles of the run, but I expected this possiblity much sooner, so it was a good deal.
I still don't know what the official results are since they have not been posted on the website, but if you are curious, my UNofficial finish time was 5:05:39.  I expected to be between 5 and 5.5 hours, so this was good.  I didn't try to crush the course so that I could recover relatively quickly and still have a solid race-like workout.  One more LONG ride and LONG run, a couple LONG swims, and the rest is filler and rest.  Gettin' closer baby!  My bike's going in for a tune-up tomorrow.
Peace,
Tri Sam
I did the same thing at Steelhead (5:13:04). I was a great "training race". Today, I am right back into training with a long swim (5000) and a spin on the bike to keep my legs flushed out. I hope everyone has a great day!

Reading about some impressive ride and run distances, long weekends, and even more seem to be planned.  Even a HIM in 5 hours (while holding back) - very impressive.  That's fantastic for the serious IM athletes living the life - wish I were there.

But for those mere mortal weekend warriors (my HIM PR at 6:25 and 2 months to recover), here's where I am in my plan to be 20% undertrained in Louisville:
Rode my second century of the year on Louisville-like hills Saturday at an 18.4 average.  Georgia heat didn't come out to play, but the humidity was ridiculous.  Nutrition was nailed, so I'm feeling better about that.  Longest run has been only 15 miles.  With knee issues lurking, I've opted to stay below 15 in training and toe the line healthy.  Long swim is still just 2500, but that's mostly due to boredom.  I'll start ramping up the swim this week, have one more big weekend on the bike and run, and then taper the legs while I build the swim up to distance.

Looking forward to the real taper starting around the 14th.  And really looking forward to packing up the gear and heading to Kentucky in a few weeks.

Keep it up.

What century did you do? I did Covington this past weekend and was wondering what the course was like compared to Lou.

I did the Covington Century this weekend and my Garmin said it was 6100 feet of climbing, which seems like alot more than it was. I think IMLOU is around that 6000 feet mark - I have talked to a few people that have done Covinton and IMLOU and they all said that the LOU couse has more hills.

Covington is what I did, as well.  Met many athletes using that as prep for IM-Lou.
My thought is that if you take Covington and add about three larger, longer climbs and a few more rollers, it would equal Louisville.  (isn't it crazy how they advertise Covington as a flat, fast course?)  So ... take Covington, add about 10 degrees to the heat, take away the rest at the water stops, add a few rollers and a few climbs, warm up with a dip in the Ohio and cool down with a marathon ...  that's IM-Lou.

Can't wait.

To tell you the truth, Covington seems "flat and fast" compared to the other 4 centuries I did this past summer. Of course, fast is relative. hehe.

I read that there's some flooding in and around the Univ of Louisville, so some of our run course may be under water.  Any locals have any news?

I always heard that the Ohio was okay for swimming unless heavy rain causes a sewer release into the river upstream.  Guess it's safe to assume the pipes are overflowing today.  I know it will be well downstream in three weeks, so nothing to worry about - correct?

Anyone else starting to lose interest in training?  I hit mile 5 on a 12 miler last night and mentally just wanted to quit and walk to the car.  I pushed through, choked down my one-thousandth gel of the year topped with yet another swig of gatorade, found another gear and finished the next 7 pretty strong.

Fondly remembering when an hour was a good workout.

Keep it up.

The key is that you finished! I tell the people that I coach that sometimes it is the mental aspect of the sport that is more difficult than the physical aspects.

This pic was taken on the walk from the Galt House to the Transition area.  Swim fast and keep your mouth shut.

This has been a tough year for louisville, hurricane Ike blew through during Ryder Cup week, then we had an ice storm that shutdown the whole state, now a major flood. We had about 6 inches in one hour, then another round of storms with pretty good wind a few hours later, they are predicting some more overnight.

The main library basement was flooded that had brand new books for a new branch, Uof L had major flooding to about 20 buildings, Churchill Downs was hit horses needed moving, etc.

When we get about two weeks out I'll start giving out water quality info like I did last year. It will take about week to get the river settled down if we don't get anymore rain.

So keep training folks, concentrate on what you can control, and don't worry about what you can't!

I did Steelhead too.  I was also using it as a training race.  I blew a couple of tubes on the bike which, I suppose, was a good thing in that it gave me some experience in dealing with adversity during the race.  I just went out on the bike for an hour and am feeling great.  This week was a "slow" week (11 hours) according to my training plan anyway so it'll be nice to have some time to get back to it.

TIM- I'm sorry about the weather in Louisville.  However, thanks for keeping us all posted and keeping a positive perspective.  I'll look forward to the water quality reports.

JOSH- Great Job at Steelhead.  I'm glad it was a positive experience for you even though you had tire issues.  It sounds like you handled it well.

EVERYONE WHO IS FEELING A BIT...RIPE- I'm glad I'm not the only one.  I thought maybe I was just being weak-minded when thoughts of "Sheesh!" crept in.  I love the training and the Ironman is a helluva' payoff, but there are certainly times when I just think, "Man, this is a LONG freakin' way."

Staying Positive-  Had a great 2.4 mile swim in our lake today and I'm looking forward to riding 100 miles tomorrow.  Good stuff.  I love this sport!

Keep it up folks!!!

Peace,
~Sam

I'm still on the partially capable team.........tried to run two miles last night after a ride and my calf is still showing signs of soreness!!  I am taking another full week of from running and going to be doing more overmileage bike rides and hope that I'll be O.K. come race day.........looks like a 1 week IM taper for me......yikes!

Anyone else have any thoughts on how to keep things together while injured this late in the game?  I was able to run 13.1+ at camp on July 25th and then the couple of miles last night.....I think if I can get the calf healed before race day, I should be able to suffer out to a decent IM marathon....

Good luck with the injury, I'm in the same boat.  Speaking of the same boat, there won't be a shortage of people suffering during the run.  You'll do better than you think.
