I believe the last we heard from some people that live down there was that it has all been paved and smoothed out. Already posted by another member Bike course:I rode the first 53 miles of the bike course. It is smoooooth, smooth, and smooth. Did I mention it's smooth? Really great course. Is is really flat until about mile 38, except for around mile 12, where you ride up an overpass...it's short but pretty steep by flatlander's standards. Once you get to about mile 38, there are a few short rollers and one longer gradual shallow hill. Nothing to get worked up about, but you will probably be in an easy gear. Speaking of gearing, I ride a 53/39 chainring in the front and was using an 11-23 cassette, and kinda wished I had my 12-25 on for that first overpass. I could have gotten out of the saddle and pushed a bit to make the 23 enough, but didn't want to stress my legs too much, so I think 12-25 would have been better. The wind was about 12 mph from the north, so the first 20 miles was into a headwind, which sucked a bit but was not too bad. Once you turn onto HWY 20 and go east, even if the wind is from the north, the crosswind is not bad because you have a thick forest to your left along the road which buffers the wind. I was riding an 808 front and Sub 9 rear and even with the 12 mph wind, I felt stable (though I am a big boy at 195 - your results may vary. I decided to use an 808 front for anything under 15mph winds ). The size of the hills do not warrant being concerned about weight over aerodynamics when it comes to wheels for this race. Hope this helps Mr Steve |
