Wind seems to be the theme today.  It got me on my ride too.  I had a wind/rain combo.  My worst ride EVER!!  We were miserable.  Needless to say, my tri got cut short.  I did a 1450m swim and a 30 mile ride.  I consider that a decent brick work out though.  My buddies did the run indoors on the treadmill.  I couldn't muster the strength.  I was so COLD I could feel in it my bones.  (Dramatic, I know)  The wind/rain swim/bike combo wiped me out.  I had to take a long nap this afternoon.  I was exhausted.

Yep, wind on my ride too.  It took me a while to figure out why I was only going 12 mph on flat.  At first I thought my legs were still fatigued from last weekend, but then the wind stopped briefly and all of a sudden I was going 18 mph.  My ride was OK.  It took me four hours to go 53 miles, but at least I never had to walk any of the hills.

I'm really starting to get nervous about my HIM.  Sure, I did this hilly ride (slowly), but I think the HIM course has longer and tougher hills, plus I didn't run thirteen miles after my ride today.  And there are only 35 days to go.  My schedule between now and then is such that I can see one more 50+ mile ride, but it won't be on a hilly course.

Sorry your rides we're great today, but great job getting through them.

One year before I was a Triathlete (Still feels weird calling myself that BTW) Greg and I biked from our apartment down to Navy Pier on the lakefront path. We got down there OK on our mountain bike tanks but we didn't realize we had a wind to our back and the ride back was brutal. We were going maybe 6-8mph... barely made it back I think the whole trip was 17 miles and we though we had done this HUGE thing biking all there way there and back.

You guys are doing well! I'm usually a wimp in bad weather especially on the bike. My first tri turned into a big thunderstorm in the middle. I saw several crashes and remnants of crashes. Scared me, especially on downhill portions.

Rain again in Arizona.  I got out in between sprinkles and ran for a bit.  Serious jitter setting in now.  33 days and counting now.

I have figured out that I have exactly three more opportunities to get in a 50+ mile ride in the next 33 days, unless I take time off of work, which I don't really want to do.  And only one of those three am I sure will be a hilly ride.  And that's if the weather cooperates.

Yeah.  I hear you on the jitter thing.

I took it easy today and just did the warm up part of Ballet Body DVD, just enough to get is some stretching and get my peach.

I have got a sore throat and am a little congested, which is exactly what I do when I have overdone the exercise thing.  It's never very much, just enough to let me know that I need to tone it down a little.  But with only 33 days left, toning it down doesn't seem right.

You and Leah are going to do great..just get the nutrition dialed in.  33 days..that's almost another 800 hours..just think of how much training you can get in..lol

I actually have been working on nutrition and think I have it nailed.  During endurance training events, I have been eating bananas. dates, sweet potatoes and/or Lara Bars (nothing in them but dried fruit and almonds) and this seems to be working.  I also take my electrolyte and evening primrose oil pills throughout the workout and that seems to do the trick on the cramping.  I am conscious of how many calories I think I ought to be taking in and aim for that.

This is not IM nutrition.  I will test this out on the Desert International Triathlon on March 7 and see if it holds in a race situation and if it does, then that is what I will do for the HIM on March 27.   I have not tested any drinks other than water.  I take in electrolytes in pill form and right now think that this will be sufficient.

Let me know how the nutrition works for you Leah and specifically what you are taking for electrolyte replacement.  I have a terrible issue with dehydrating during long training rides or over time.  Just trying to figure it out before I crash and burn.

I have been using Endurolytes made by Hammer Products.   My coach also suggested evening primrose oil pills so I take them too.  They don't advertise themselves for being for this purpose, but when I take both evening primrose oil pills and the Endurolytes regularly, I don't have cramping and so I am not going to mess with it.  I don't know if they work or help or whatever, but I'm still going to take them.   I also seriously work on stretching the lower extremities and I believe that also helps with cramping.  Next, I am going to take eye of newt and put it under my pillow and see if that help too.

I have done various drinks during training. I have found nuun and cytomax work for me. Sometimes propel too.
Nuun is nice because of the tabs in the tube, it's easy and convenient.

I have some others I have waiting to try including motor tabs and some others. I have tried some I don't like including Hammer HEED lemon lime, I think it tastes gritty. I think many BTers ordered some infinit when they had a sale a few weeks back. I tried to order some then changed the formula and the price went up so I abandoned it. I think finding a flavor and texture you like is important, I like grape flavor.

It's also important to practice eating on the bike and run or you could bonk in and HIM or IM without enough calories.

I just finished a 8.5 mile run which is the longest I've run in almost 30 years, working up to Half Marathon in less than a month. I still have my swim practice tonight too. I'm getting ready for the trip to AZ next week, shipping the Trek off to Kate tomorrow!

Hope everyone is well.

8.5 miles. Awesome Lisa.

I did get some infinit during the sale, but I'm saving it for long outdoor rides, so no opinion yet. Right now I've been using various lighter sports drinks (propel, vitamin water etc) just to keep the calories down but I think I'm going to have to give that up some point soon to practice taking in the 250-300calories an hour we're supposed to w/ ironman training. Otherwise I just use GU because I have a ton of them. Honey Stingers are awesome too.

Great job on the run, partly because it was 8-1/2 miles and partly because it was the longest run you had done in thirty years.

I got a free Heed container a while back.  I mostly use it to race, training I keep water, occasionally some gatorade or propel.

I need to work on the nutrition for hard sessions more and dial in what might be best for my HIM over the summer.

"Details" such as they are in my blog.....I am posting a 50 miles for my 50th birthday virtual ride.  My local friends and I will be riding on March 14 (actual b-day is earlier that week but my ride partner can't do the weekend before cause of work ).  If you can ride them outside-great.  If on a trainer 2 sessions are fine, I know how squirrley I get on the darn thing!

Debb - I got my first issue of Eating Well magazine.  Have you gotten yours yet?  I made the turkey cutlets with rhubarb chutney.  It was quite good and rather easy to make it.  Each serving was less than 300 calories.

I am going to try to do my level best to do this.  I will be in Northern California that weekend, but if I get back in time I might be able to do half outside and half on the trainer.

Over on Team Skinny we sometimes do stuff like this.  On holidays we will have a virtual race.  We're pretty loose - you pick your distance.  So far I have been the winner in my age group for every race.  Pretty cool.  (Yes, of course, I was the only person in my age group that picked the distance that I did.)

Looks like everyone is ramping up!  8 mile runs, 50 mile bikes, lots of races . . . Great job NUTSOs!  Spring is in the air!

I have a 50 some mile ride on Sunday up to the TV towers at South Mountain.  This is supposed to be similar to my HIM ride.  I am pretty excited and I will be ready to go!  I'm going to work this week on getting runs and swims in to balance out the bike.  Hopefully it will stop raining long enough for me to get up that mountain!

Queenie - I'll dedicate my 50 miler to your 50th Birthday!  I'll try to remember to post a picture for you.
Lisa - I can't wait to get your bike!  Hopefully it is just my size!  Wink Congrats on your run!
Leah - I'm going in and out of FREAK OUT mode.  I'm in a calm phase right now.  It could change in about 10 minutes!
Debb - Did you tell the gals you are down 120?!  YOU are my weight loss hero!
Scott - Are you training?
Keely - What's up?  Turning up the heat?
Kiri - How's it going?

Kate and Leah, you are doing great! I can't wait to follow your progress on race day!

Debb you are an inspiration to follow, I'm working on it too. I did a weigh in today I'm down 2.5 from my last weigh in 7 so far this year. I'm wondering if I should set a time based sub goal set. My 1 year anniversary of getting fit/tri training is approaching in mid April. I think I have a goal in mind to set for that.

Queen Zip-See Above

Kiri-Go Go Go, how are you adapting to your bridge plan? Have you picked an HIM?

Scott How's it going this week? You were on a roll last week.

Judi would have to say for sure, Kate, but I think the virtual group ride is on March 14th.  You will just have to do ANOTHER 50 miler on that day.  (More and more 50 milers!!!!)

Oh, I get it now, a virtual 50 miler on March 14th. I will be back from my trip, if the weather is decent I might be into doing it, I can't see doing a 50 miler on the trainer especially after being in AZ and riding the roads for a week. Maybe we can think of indoor alternatives or metric 50's depending on weather conditions.

Kate - I don't think I said anything here, but I don't want you guys to get tired of me talking about it. I am WAY up today though. Holding tons of water after eating very badly yesterday. Probably going to be a few days until I get back to -120 now. I'm really impatient to get below 180 though because then I'll only be "overweight" and no longer "obese" Probably not going to happen for a few weeks now at this point. Have fun on your south mountain ride let us know how it goes!! I'm so excited your race is coming up soon.

Queen - 50 probably will be more then I'm allowed to do at this point, as we're still keeping our rides fairly short in sorta a base build phase, but if I can do 50 and it's nice enough outside I'll do it.

Lisa - Congrats on being down so much! Lots of hard work isn't it? but SO worth it!! I think you should do something to celebrate your 1yr journey!! You'll have to post some before/during pictures for us sometime. You must be feeling pretty great these days. I think those of us who were very overweight at some point have a special appreciation for the feeling of freedom being fit gives us.

Leah - Got the Eating Well a few days ago but haven't read it yet. Was going to toss it in my carry-on to look at on the airplane. Did you manage to work a few more long rides into your schedule?

Kir, Scott how goes it? Hope your out there busy training. I know Kir just started her training plan how about you Scott when does yours start?

Hey Guys!!

Sorry I've been MIA the past week and a half?! WOW..didn't even realize that much time had flown since I'd been online here! Snow has been melting gradually and we had a good day of rain yesterday so I'm down to about a foot in my yard but I'm starting to see grass again!! Too bad the dogs are getting so used to pooping in the snow they're still climbing snow hills to do their business!! LOL

I went to a bike swap last weekend and bought an awesome Cannondale mountain bike! I can't WAIT to ride it! We've got our first scheduled group ride March 7th. Short and sweet to let some of the tri-newbies get a feel for biking and pace, etc. I'm hoping the NCR trail is in decent enough shape this weekend that I might bring the new MTB out to go for a ride!.

Worked out with my new trainer last night and feel sore and tired today but good. He went easy on me because he's still gauging my fitness level (crappy IMHO). But I got some good runs in last week and haven't logged them so I'll get that back up tonight. He had me doing some jumping drills and footwork then some light weights. Next week he's going to set me up on my weekly regimen since I'm meeting with him only once a week. I think I'm going to see who wants to do a brick and run with me after the group ride next week. I'll have to make my friend go with me since she's also doing Eagleman with me too.

Sorry I haven't kept up..took me a while just to read through the pages from where I last left off!

Oh! I'm definitely in for the virtual 50 mile ride in celebration of Queenie's 50th!!!

The only news I have is this morning I finally hit 214! Which is -55, which is OVERWEIGHT!
I've never been so excited to be merely overweight! Hurray!

Bridge going well so far. I think i've finally tweaked the plan to my liking - had to shuffle yesterdays 45 min ride to today so I could recover a bit from the weekend - I was pooped yesterday. I also switched the runs to miles instead of minutes because I really need to focus on getting quality long runs up to just under half marathon distance (~11m), I'm still not quite there yet. I'll cover the other 2-3 miles in the 20 week HIM program.  This 12 week will hopefully get me to comfortably do Oly distance runs on a regular basis, and help build up to planned century ride (non-race) in May. I'm also focusing on swim more because my season opener 2000m OWS is also in May and I want to utterly destroy my time from last year's dismal race in which I had major wardrobe failure. Read about it here for the deets.

I'll join in on the virtual 50 miler and if it's a nice day hopefully have some gorgeous photos for you. Also, I might have to think up a virtual 40 challenge as my 40th is on March 13th! Maybe a swim - I'll suggest a nice 40s style swim for anyone who wants to join in...
