bar92 - 2010-09-13 3:35 PMHey gang,
Just got off the phone with a company that is going to print some shirts for my family and friends who will be at IMFL to support me.  Got me thinking that we haven't done anything on BT shirts for us.  Do we still want to do that?  There isn't much time.  I know we were looking for hot pink tech shirts, but they are not to be found.  I know there was a IM logo that incorporated the BT logo posted on here a while back that could be used.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Forget about it?
I'm down for getting shirts.

Ok folks, I need a crash course in race wheels.

Before my long ride Saturday I ran into a friend of mine who has done IMFL.  He asked if I was going to use race wheels and I said "what you see is what you get".  I ride a P2C that has American Classic 420 wheels on it.

He mentioned that he might be able to get me some race wheels for IMFL.  He said he borrows them from a friend for some of his races.  Hearing that, I kind of got excited.  Don't know that he will be able to borrow them, but I know you can also rent them.

How much difference do they really make?  What should I look for if I go this route?  Should I get front/back or just back?  Don't know if it matters, but me and the bike together weigh less than 150 and wind can blow me around pretty easily.

I'm doing the Redman full aqua bike 9/25, so I could possibly rent some for that and try them out.  Obviously I'd want to ride long on them before race day, but I just don't know enough about race wheels at this point to make an educated decision.

Get some race wheels bar92. They make you get done quicker. What more do you need to know? Just may need to be careful and not get a disc if its going to be windy.

Race wheels look cool and help you feel fast..love the sound of the hubs...but give you about 40" per 40K so may save you 4-5 minutes in an Ironman.

Renting them for $100, is it worth 4-5 minutes? Only you know the answer to that.

I have Zipp 404s and a disc cover for the back. I don't get blown around at all but weigh a fair bit more than you do.

I have Hed3s.  DO NOT rent Hed3s for an ironman because they are an incredibly stiff ride and you will be cursing Steve Hed by mile 60.  I ride mine all the time so my bumm is used to them.  These are my thoughts on the difference I feel

1-Its easier and quicker to get up to speed
2-Once you are up to speed its easier to stay there and maintain speed
3-Mine are a little more wobbly than a spoked wheel but if you have a spoked race wheel this will not be an issue
4-They help me in wind of any kind but in a heavy cross wind can be unpredictable.

And of course they look super cool

I'd love to have a shirt too.  Any one have time to order some?

no race wheels for me, and no intention of renting them.  the amount of time I could potentially save just isn't enough for me to fork over the money.  I really only care about finishing.  i would like to finish in under 14 hour but if I finish in 14:05 I won't think "I wish I had rented those wheels so that I could have got the time I wanted".  five minutes over 14 hours?  not worth it.

That being said I am notoriously cheap and refused to use a CO2 cartridge until I had a flat out on the road because I didn't want to waste the $3 cartridge.

I'm a firm believer in race wheels.  I used to ride Hed H3 front and back but I didn't like the feel of the ride all that much.  I then moved to a Hed Jet Disc rear, H3 front and it was better but a real stiff wind makes the handling a little iffy with a disc/H3 combo (and I weigh 175 lbs).  My current setup is a Hed Jet 6 front, Hed Jet Disc rear.  I also have a Hed Jet 9 rear that I mostly use for training rides (yes, I understand the ridiculousness of using a $900 wheel as a training wheel but I bought it thinking I was going to do IM Cozumel this year).

The Jet 6/Disc combo works great for me.

The difference in running a deep wheel (from 60mm to disc) is very noticeable when compared to running typical rims that are 20-30mm in depth.

While most of you are working tomorrow I hope to do a 6-7 hour ride  Will be my longest ride since IM Canada last summer.

How long I ride depends partially on if new car pool for kids works out and if my knee does well. I saw my PT today and she doesn't think I have tendinitis but weakness in left side (side to side not forward) I had surgery in. When I last saw her in July strength was close to equal left and right side. No limitations on training. I stopped doing my PT strength exercises and that was stupid on my part.

I'm doing an IM aquabike next weekend in Cambridge MD.

If you guys don't mind recycling a shirt design we can use the back from 2 years ago and the new front.  I thought about a yellow shirt.  Blue and red print on the front and black and red on the back.  I'd change the date on the back of course.

I definitely gain speed with my race wheels (SRAM S80's).  I weigh right around 150lbs so the 90mm depth on the front is about all I can handle.  As far as the rear wheel, most of your weight is back there so when you're getting blown around, it's usually from the front.

I do advise riding on the race wheels on a few long rides before IM.  A strong wind gust can move you around pretty good.

And yeah....they sound cool as hell.  Tongue out

I've got flashpoints that I've used the past 2 Ironmans and been happy with...but a friend has offered me her zipps, the rear is a disc..and also she is loaning me her aero helmet...and if it means I will put a few extra minutes in the bank, I will take it!!!  Every minute counts this year.  Hopefully not a windy day, if it is, I'll just run my flashpoints.

Obligatory race wheel pic, you should totally use them if you can provided you can get in a couple rides on them before the race as they do make the bike handle differently and you notice the cross winds a bit more.

I'd also practise changing the inner tube if you do get race wheels, it's a bit more fiddly with the valve extenders than a normal wheel. The crosswinds can be an issue, although not really for me as I weigh just over 200 lbs. I have Zipp 808 on the rear and 404 on the front on my P3
