Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() russrisher - 2012-08-14 9:35 AM Has anyone tried Strava.com?
It's pretty cool. I do! I don't use it for every time I ride though. One of the things that I notice is the discriminancy between Strava, Garmin Connect, and the actual Garmin. The times are off by one to 3 minutes. The elevation data is way off, and the segments are user created. Some people would have the most stupidest segment for 0.1 miles. I mean Really?! BUT it is nice to see how you compare for the major ones. I've gotten some QOMs and some taken away. I still won't pay for it for premium users, but it would be really nice to compare my previous 5 times on the same segment and see how I've improved. The medals/placement doesn't count much because it's not against ME, it's against other people. If I got a PR on one segment, I want to SEE how I did the last few times. Does that make sense? A few of my friends left Strava because they felt that it was impeding their riding enjoyment since many people in our group wants to ride faster/better all the time, and they don't want to have to feel like they need to keep up. Only one person I know is a little bit too much on Strava and wants to have a high number of KOM's. So...it's kind of a safety issue if someone wants to go that crazy. Remember the lawsuit against Strava? Other than that, I keep it a nice friendly competition and this is how I can kind of tell which parts I have improved on, and which parts I can have a goal for to get better. Garmin Connect doesn't do this, so that's kind of nice. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() acv - 2012-08-14 9:54 AM CyborgQueen - 2012-08-13 11:02 PM My novel...blah blah blah... DJ, After doing the marathon early this year I thought to myself "This is my year". I couldn't have been more wrong. It was, and still is, a real struggle to put together my training for my races this year. The actual race took way more out of me than I thought it would. I had no idea how hard it would be to come back - I just thought I'd keep rolling along but that's not what happened. I'm still thinking about the HIM at the end of Sept and if I feel like I can do it, I will. But good for you to do some soul searching and figure out what you really want! Oh and none of this is easy, keep that in mind. I agree...I also felt like this was MY year because I've improved so much on the bike and the run and it'll be awesome to show off my abilities, but it was just feeling like it was "work" vs fun. I needed that soul searching, and I'm really happy and it's a big relief off my shoulders to not to think about training schedules. Mind you, I *do* want to do a HIM someday. Just not now...perhaps I'll even be MORE super-fast and ready to rock any course. Too bad I don't know when. LOL! next year? 5 years from now? Wonder if BT will still be around....lol. Thanks again you all for your encouragements! |

Speaking of Strava, if anyone wants to connect you can look me up, Ken Johnson Canandaigua NY! Nothing special...except that someone is having a Birthday. *winks* Going to ride around Red Rock to Blue Diamond and back with a friend. I was invited for 4 different rides on Saturday...I've decided to take it easy on Saturday and Sunday after some hard rides. Saturday night, Mythbusters is in town and we're going to see them as well as Meet and Greet with Jamie and Adam. This should be a lot of fun! My fiance's little Birthday gift to me. Sunday - dunno, not in the plans yet! Ken - I'm your stalker now...;P |

I've got PT again tomorrow morning. Sunday, I am leading the LTF cycle club ride. So I have to do something this weekend. I've got my workout cloths with here at work so I may try to run a little and do some weight training after work. |

It's easy in the winter but now it takes me an hour to cool off in the office even after a cold shower. Don't be guilty! This has been a rough year for everyone, injury wise, and can't get yourself down for stuff that is out of your control. Give it time and you'll be out again kicking but on the run! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Incredible weekend here with the weather! Saturday- had PT for my foot. I think I may have hurt my shoulder again weight training Friday, but we shifted focus to my foot and so far it seems to be helping. Although, I planned a run after PT Saturday, they were working adhesions and I darn near jumped through the ceiling! Did nothing after that. Used the day to get grass cut and do some other yard work. Sunday- worked ride lead for LTF. My wife went with too, getting ready for the Chicago tri. Had to split the group up and got to do some paceline work with a couple other fast guys. There was a good 10 miles we stayed between 23-26mph! VERY FUN! everyone met back up with about 5-8 miles left on the route and I road back with my wife and a few other that we had split from earlier, but we did a longer route. Afer that the crap hit the ceiling. We came home to a bloody cat. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What a great birthday weekend! Saturday - I went to a Lifetime Fitness Cycling group (free, don't need to be a member of LTF) and hung with the B group. Before I knew it, I hit the FASTEST BIKE RIDE EVER 46 miles at 17.8 mph avg. Holy SMOKES!! It felt EASY! I think because my fitness has increased so much that it was much more easier to keep up in a pace line. Could I have gone faster? Absolutely! There was some points of the ride that I pretty much was ho-hum...and I was going 27-29mph. Definitely could have pushed it faster. I think I would like to hang out with these folks for a while. It didn't feel like I was going all out, but it wasn't that easy either. Getting better on the hills, but still have room for improvement. Strava shows a lot of PR's, so that's a nice bonus! I think there's several factors in this great ride - much better morning nutrition, weather was unusually cooler with a nice cloud cover, or I'm just getting better. Sunday - Went to see Jamie and Adam for their Mythbusters on Tour: Behind the Myths. When Adam asked who is a cyclist or a triathlete? Guess who's hands shot right up! I had to cycle a bike to try to blow up another person's balloon to dump a lot of water on them. They gave me rain gear that was 4 sizes too big, boots 5 sizes too big so it was a struggle to pedal, and I'm used to clipless, not mashing! LOL! All is fun...Adam came up to me while I was getting changed, and apologized for the super-sized gear and that I was a great sport. Met Adam and Jamie after the show and had my picture taken with them. What a great weekend! Edited by CyborgQueen 2012-08-20 12:56 PM |

They've been working on the cat all day. Not sure we've made any progress yet, but I haven't been told to come home to put it down yet, so that's good news.
Nice work DJ!!! That's what I do for work on the weekends. If you call getting paid to ride a bike work!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great pic Kathleen and Carla! DJ - my son is soooo envious of you meeting the mythbusters - his favorite show! Sorry about your cat Brian - I hope she gets better.
I have been super busy doing the "Alaska thing" so haven't been training nearly as much as needed. Fishing for pinks Been keeping up on the running for my HM in October - back up to 5 miles! Foot is not great, but just ignoring it for now. Kids start back to school on Wednesday so things should start getting back to a normal schedule.

Sounds like a great way to spend the summer Robin, too bad it came to an end so soon! I love the fall other than knowing what comes next! |

That just sounds like a whole heck of a lot of fun to me!
I ordered some orthotics today, because my PF seemed to be worse when I'm walking downtown to work and during the day. Hopefully, they'll give me more support for that. I also ordered some orthotic sandals they had so I can where them casually. I gotta get this thing licked! Not being able to go out and enjoy a run is killing me mentally!
Cat made it through the night. Darn thing is 18 years old and on it's 18th life, I'm sure! |

I'm still trying to perfect my plan, but I think I got pretty close last time. For me this is what I'm going with for the next one after modifying my last plan: -Normal breakfast 300-500cals 2-3 hours before the race -1/2 a cliff bar 45 minutes before swim start -300cals per hour -100-300 per hour on the run living off the course feeling out what I need and how I've done on the plan to this point. |

What do you like for these calories? I've been using gels but been wondering about using something like Hammer perpetuem and using the multi-hour bottle apporach as outlined here on the Hammer website: |

I used First Endurance EFS at Racine, because I don't have to take extra salt tabs and it's what my stomach handles. That said mixing enough for 300/hr with EFS prolly won't work. I'll have to try their gel. I tried using gu gels disolved in a bottle on a long ride a couple weeks ago but they didn't disolve properly. I've gotten hammer gels to disolve before in a water bottle. Perpetum works too. I just seem to need some extra salt and don't like the salt tabs. I'm going to try EFS in one bottle and First Endurance gell in another on a long ride soon to see how my stomach does. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() acv - 2012-08-21 10:40 AMSo whats your nutrition plan advice for a half iron man? I've only done one, but the nutrition worked out pretty well. PB and J and some sugary sancks for breakfast and a gatorade before the race. During the bike, every half hour, I take a couple of squirts (about 125 calories) of my home made GU. I carry it in a 8oz soft-flask and only drink water (2 bottles, a 20oz aerodrink and one on the downtube for filling/exchanging). The liquid nutrition seems complicated to me and the packaged nutrition seems expensive to use for all the hours of training we put in. On the run, its one shot of whatever they are handing out per half hour. I messed this up on the last race and ate too much at the beginning of the run and paid for it a little. GU MIXTURE Just under 1 cup honey 1/4 tsp salt 2 salt stick capsules, emptied (to get a mix of electrolytes) 1 heaping tsp instant coffee About 2 tbs choclate syrup Put the dry ingredients in a bowl, stir with just enough hot water to dissolve, add honey and hersheys, mix, and go train (makes 8oz)... |
