From now on I'll be watching this to remind me to visualize the big picture! Great commercial - thanks for posting. I've gone through about 1/3 of those excuses today. Gonna get the trainer out now. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: QUEEN ZIP & KathyG - CLOSED Whats on tap today? This weekend? Who's racing? I know Leah has a 1/2 Mary this weekend.... Today I'm doing my long workout with a 3 mile run with some pick ups followed by a 50 mile ride with some low RPM intervals. Tomorrow is the big NE multisport expo with speakers, booths selling all tri stuff and a big BT dinner so it will be my off day or I might swim. Sunday is my long run 8 miles with a 2K swim later. I'm enjoying that my IM training is getting more real and now that the weather is better I can do most of my riding outside which are longer than trainer rides. It is strange to think IM Canada is more than 5 months away and I look at my volume now..110-120 miles riding, 20+ run miles, and swims well there aren't up there so much. With my new coach I have no idea what I will peak at but it is fun and I have time. |

Nothin wrong with a little time to run...I remember all too clearly what it's like w/ a newborn though. You're probably at your most awke at 3am but probly not in the mood for a run. Enjoy your weekend - whatever it is |

I used my sister's Wii Fit last month when I was in Texas and what I found out from the balance games was that my balance sucked. I only did it for 25 minutes, but I can't say that I felt it anywhere other than my ego. I thought it was fun and have been toying with the idea of getting one. I would have to justify it as a workout tool. So, tell me your thoughts on the Wii fit as a workout tool. |

Veteran 202 Columbia, KY | Subject: RE: QUEEN ZIP & KathyG - CLOSED I asked this question over on the "Team Skinny" thread, but I thought I'd ask for input here, too. I know everybody is different, but what works for you as far as carb consumption? I thought complex carbs were supposed to provide energy, but if you are limiting carbs in order to lose weight, what do you do for energy? What am I missing? |

I know everybody is different, but what works for you as far as carb consumption? I thought complex carbs were supposed to provide energy, but if you are limiting carbs in order to lose weight, what do you do for energy? What am I missing? Limiting carbs will negatively effect your workouts. I've done this I know. What I think works is eat only lean meat, fruit and veggies any time. Add in more processed food and things like bread, potatoes, only before or after a workout. Another good rule is don't eat white food..bread, potatoes, white rice and eat the more natural and lower glycemic index food like brown or wild rice; sweet potatoes, bread made with 100% whole grains and not white flour. Most important meal of the day is what you eat after a workout especially if it is long for you ie run or bike, so you can recover well and be set for next workout. Workouts under an hour you probably don't need recovery food afterwards unless it is high intensity for you. Yogurt is a great recovery food as it has a 3:1 or 4:1 carb:protein ratio which is ideal for recovery food....as it chocolate milk. You can get carbs from fruits and veggies. |

Expert 1773 San Gabriel Valley, California | Subject: RE: QUEEN ZIP & KathyG - CLOSED I just did a little, local, 5K put on the benefit this preschool run by Carmelite nuns. I have done Bay to Breakers several times so have seen plenty of odd runners, but seeing a bunch of nuns in full habit with race numbers pinned to their chests is not to be missed. Did it nice and easy because I am doing the half marathon tomorrow, but even still was able to average 11:39 and to run the whole thing with no walk breaks - things I haven't been able to do for maybe six or seven years. Of course, it was flat and that certainly helps. Have a good weekend everyone. |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: QUEEN ZIP & KathyG - CLOSED Leah, Great job on the 5K! I like the wii as an occasional alternative. I don't know if you can really get a thorough workout from it and I know it senses your position but it can't tell you if you are in correct form for the entire move. I like it, but would say that doing a video like the Flexible Warrior series Kathy has mentioned may be as good or better. Group ride was awesome! |

Master 2146 East Side of the Bay | Subject: RE: QUEEN ZIP & KathyG - CLOSED custer - 2009-03-21 12:01 AM I asked this question over on the "Team Skinny" thread, but I thought I'd ask for input here, too. I know everybody is different, but what works for you as far as carb consumption? I thought complex carbs were supposed to provide energy, but if you are limiting carbs in order to lose weight, what do you do for energy? What am I missing? I think the term complex carbs is confusing. Simple carbs are things like table sugar, complex carbs are just simple carbs combined to make chains. When you eat them they are very quickly broken down into simple sugars and cause your blood sugar to rise and fall quickly. White flour products, sugar (baked goods & candy) and white potatoes and white rice all fall into this category. They are great for an immediate surge in energy but leave you flat very quickly. Thatquick up and down can also trigger your appetite and lead you into a cycle of frequent eating of quickly digested carbs and then quickly being hungry again.A whole grain is a carb rich food that had not been refined. So it is wheat with the kernel, germ and bran still intact; or rice that hasn't had it's outer bran coating removed. Whole grains provide carbs but because of the extra fiber from the bran it is digested much slower and the sugar is then released into the blood stream in a slower and more steady fashion. This means you don't get the sugar high and low in the same way as non-whole grain carbs. Whole grains also have more vitamins since stripping away the germ and bran removes lots of nutrients (that is why most white flour needs to be enriched, to add back some of what was taken away). Kathy G is right that you need carbohydrates for your training- it replenishes the glycogen stored in our muscles and liver that is burned for fuel while exercising. Our brains also exclusively use carbs for fuel so going too low on carbs while also leave you with some foggy thinking. A diet with lots of veggies, adequate protein and moderate amounts of whole grains will keep you alert, training well and losing weight. ---Sorry this was so long but I get pretty fired up about nutrition ;-) |
