For what it is worth. My first ironman was in 2009 and I finished at 9:00. I went to the room showered and went to sleep. I missed the finish line party between 11 and 12. I am excited about number 2 and will not miss that again. I would encourage everyone to get their food and shower up and come back if you finish early enough. If I was not doing a second this would be my one regret from the first one.

Had a sweet super brick today.  Did 1.5 in the water, 80 on bike followed by 11 mile run.  I was biking/running with a friend who was faster than me on bike / run so he forced me into the hurt lucker.

Air temp was 40 at the start, plenty of fog on the lake, made it tough to see no wake bouys we were swimming around.  New shoes worked well.  Bike was working well....until.  Mile 20 a junkyard dog came out of nowhere and slammed into my rear wheel.  I saw him at the last minute so leaned into him as the collision occurred.  No damage to me, as I'm sure the dog got the best of it.  He scampered away without much fuss.  My rear wheel however was knocked horrible out of true and was scraping the chainstay on every revolution.  Couldn't adjust anything to make it clean.  Oh well, training day needs extra wattage right?  Well I certainly got it.  Was able to limp it around our loop to finish the ride but took much more effort.  Good thing I'm renting race wheels in two weeks.

Overall I feel ready, just wish it wasn't two weeks away.  But my body is going to enjoy taper town for sure.

Great story..reminds me of a time a dog almost had my foot but i grabbed my trusty can of HAULT Pepper spray and hit him square in the face and watchin him dash through the grass yelping as he tried to wipe it off....I almost went down,,dropped my can of the spray but went back for it and was preparde to do battle once again....He would tried to bite me ,, i bite back with a vengence!!

OK, just one more thing to think about - Tropical Storm Rina.  Ugh!  I track these for work since we are in S Florida and have to watch every TS or Hurricane.

Unfortunately this is a very slow storm.  It is currently projected to make a right turn and go over South Florida which would be perfect.  We want it to stay south.

The gulf is a little too cold for a strong storm to develop so I am not really worried about a direct hit to PCB but just don't want the residual effects, wind, waves, rain.......

By Saturday we should have a good idea.  Keep your fingers crossed.

In response to ChinaExpress's issues:

You never make it through an Ironman training plan without setbacks right?

Well, my setback just came into town. This past weekend, my back was aching and I decided to put off my last long ride until this weekend to give my body some rest and to recover. Unfortunately, this wasn't able to happen. This Monday, I was having a meeting with my boss and I was moving an extra chair into his office. I brought the chair in, not heavy at all, and put it down on the ground. I didn't twist in any weird way at all, but the second I put the chair down, my whole back seized up and I could not stand up straight. Very strange how one small little movement like that can put your whole body down.

Well, since then, I've spent the past 3-4 days in massive amounts of pain. I was in bed for most of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with excruciating pain in my hip, low back and shin. The doctor diagnosed it as a pinched nerve/sciatica and I've got some meds now, but nevertheless, I've been on the shelf since last week and am getting a little nervous of IMFL. I've done a decent amount of long rides bricks and culminating with a 100 miler with a 40 min brick two weeks ago. I have also been following the swim and run plan almost to the T (just have not been logging at all).

Any thoughts or ideas on what I should do with the rest of my time? I'm un-officially in taper mode, but should I put in one last push when I am healthy again?

I have had back issues for the last 20 years (and actually had a disc removed 19 years ago). I find I have to stretch constantly on my rides, but hey, it could be worse!

I have also had EXACTLY the same thing happen numerous times over the last few years and I have to say, the best thing for a quick fix (I needed to have it done after it happening to me two weeks before a surfing trip to South Africa) is a cortisone shot directly to the area where the pinching is occurring. After not being able to get out of bed - I surfed 7 to 8 hours a day for two weeks.

just my 2 cents worth

MRDAVIDALEXANDER - 2011-10-23 12:14 PM

Not sure if my wife will be traveling with me to IMFL.  We are undecided.....our family is willing to watch our kids but is it worth it? They will be a wreck when we get back and honestly don't know if my wife and I would have a lot of time alone together.  Between the registering, bike check in, race, traveling, etc leaves very little time.  I am planning on coming Thursday and leaving Sunday (either if she comes or not).  I feel like we should save our "alone" vacation when we can not have a Ironman to do.   Thoughts?

I was also thinking of bringing my iphone to the transitions and I can bring up skype and talk to my family with video after the race.

Also, what is everyone doing after the race? Do most people go out afterwards?

Usually people dont' really go out.  You will be wiped out and want a shower and food.

Thank about if you realy want to do this alone and not share it with your wife.  This si not abotu alone time withyour wife its about you donig your first ironman which is  HUGE accomplishment., I woudl want someone to share it with. I am sure she has seen yout hru a lot this year.  Just someting to think about

Something else to think about is what time you think you will finish and how you think you will feel.  I finished (to my surprised) in 13:56:00, but I'm not sure I would have had the energy to go and get my bike and transition bags and get them back to my rented house by myself.  It was nice to have support there - some picked me up and drove me back to the house while others got my bike and bags for me.  They also had my requested dinner waiting for me at the house.  I guess part of it depends on how supportive/unsupportive your wife is and has been.  Plus, it is nice to see a familiar face out there while you are racing, even if it's only one or two times.

12 days!

How's every feeling?

Tapering can feel weird to many and you may have all the sudden niggling aches and pains show up....they will go away.

How's packing going?

How about posting photos of your bike and you wearing what you plan to wear so we can have an idea what to look for. Still waiting for shark stuff to arrive.

i have lived in south louisiana my whole life and i can assure you that for every one of these storms that we hear about that actually end up affecting our weather in a negative way there are HUNDREDS that peter out and we never hear from again....let's just enjoy our taper, stay healthy, think on the things we can control in a positive way.....can't wait!!!

I can't wait to start packing.  In fact, I may do that today.  I have a pile of stuff on a futon that my cat has decided is his new favorite sleeping place.  I need to organize it.  This is my first time flying to a race

I an wearing Team Red, White and Blue tri top with blackOomph shorts with blue stitching and have a USA red with and blue bike top for ht ebike with matching arm warmers....of course.  My motto is I am not fast so I have to look good

I ride a Lucero lite that is BLACK with LIME GREEN accents, SRAM 60s and LIME GREEN tires

Some of you may have seen this, but I had to repost it, great reading for Monday morning!

1. There are 6.5 billion people on earth. About 30,000 of them do Ironman. That’s less than 1 out of every quarter of a million people. That’s reason enough.
2. After clicking submit on the application your first thought is “WTH did I just do”
3. Because you tear up watching Ironman Hawaii on TV.
4. After watching the TV coverage of Hawaii Ironman, you dream of being there yourself one day.
5. To reach down and find strength you never knew was there.
6. because you don’t get older, you get more competitive as you age up
7. Beats watching reality TV
8. You get to create you own “Amazing race!”
9. for all the times you’ve heard someone say “I’d do one of those . . . I just can’t swim”
10. Telling people an ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run…only to have them look at you dazed and ask again “now, how far is that race you’re doing again?”
11. Because you told everyone “one day I will be and Ironman!”
12. You can eat more than three times a day.
13. wearing a form fitting tri suite is motivation enough to stick to your diet
14. Testing the endurance limits of the iPod music collection in your head.
15. Spectators cheering your name as you run past
16. How many people can say they did something for 12, 13, 14, 15, 16. . . hours?
17. The volunteer at the finish line reminding you did finish b/c you are too disoriented to realize it.
18. Talking about HR zones at 3am after a night out with friends with a buzz.
19. Your bicycle becomes part of the living décor

27. It’s not just a hobby but a passion.
28. the huge crowds cheering you at La Grange both times you pass through (Ironman Louisville)
