Traffic on the 15 over the weekends is horrendous. I think it's a fantastic idea, but these days, major public works projects are so expensive, they don't pencil out very well. I think you would get a lot of subsidizing from the casinos for that one. That or sell a HELL of a lot of advertising space on the trains. I think that's a great idea. Is there any reason it couldn't be a private business venture?? |

My guess is the casinos would subsidize it and advertising could take care of the rest, and fees to ride could help offset any ongoing maintenance costs. Of course, that sounds all good and well but the reality is probably quite different and it'd be a boondoggle. |

But off the cuff as an engineer into that kind of stuff, the interstate issue could be a problem, obtaining Right of Way, how the revenue is divided (I'm sure the states would want a big piece of that pie, especially CA that bankrupt and gouging mass transit already). Nothing that a room full of lawyers and a bank full of money can't solve though. |

As for a construction project, it's pretty straight forward too. Pretty desolate stretch and wide open and flat-ish. Seismic would be a concern, but they deal with that in Japan, so there is a solution. If it's affordable (at least the same as a flight) I would go back and forth a bit more often. Sign me up. |

There was some discussion, maybe even federal money for a study, of light rail from Atlanta to Chattanooga, and various other distances north and south along I-75. We also need some infrastructure within the metro areas for local public transportation but light rail would be a better approach than paving more lanes on the interstate. The opposition to it says that it would be expensive and that other rail projects have not be utilized enough to pay for themselves. They do have some history on their side. Some innovative thinking would have to be used to change the one-person-one-car mentality of transportation in the US. Do they have the Megabus from LA to Las Vegas? I want to ride the one from Knoxville to Atlanta rather than drive because it is like $10. They have really comfy seats and Wifi and it is just about as fast as driving. But getting to the Knoxville station without parking a car in a nasty area of Knoxville is expensive. And I would be without a car in Atlanta. |
