Here's the deal with race timing & cut-offs:

 1.  The race for age groupers will start at 7:00am

2.  The course officially closes 17 hours after the FIRST age grouper starts - so 12:00am

3.  The swim cut off is 2:20 after the last swimmer starts.  Meaning if the last person gets in at 7:30, the cut-off time is 10:00.  Still in the water then, you're DNF'd

4.  The bike course has 2 time thresholds:  (a) if you don't start the 2nd loop by 2:15, you're DNF'd, and (b) if you don't finish the bike segment by 5:30pm, you're DNF'd.

5.  The run course also has 2 time thresholds:  (a) if you don't start the 2nd loop - mile 14 - by 9:00pm, you're DNF'd, and (b) again, if you're not done by 12:00am, the course closes.

Hope that helps!

I read that in the guide.  But in 07 and 08 the final cut-off was 17 hours after the final age grouper entered the water.

I wonder if they had alot to finish over 17 hours, due to the 20ish + minutes the TT start added.

Did everyone see the projected water temp. in the packet and that there is a chance that it will be wetsuit legal. Is this possible or did they say this in last years packet as well. I know they have had a cooler summer so maybe just maybe.

IF you are flying and haven't bought your plane ticket yet for IMKY I recommend US airway. The flights are cheap right now and you can ship your bike for FREE!!!
Just go to the travel link on the IMKY main site and book your flight. You will receive a voucher via email. I bought my plane ticket on Tues and received my voucher today. Looking forward to meeting everyone there!!! Should we plan a meet and greet on Fri at the gatorade swim?

actually there were still people out on the course last year when they shut down the finish line,  so even though there were people finishing over 17hrs,  there were people left behind..  Maybe they thought people were using it as a crutch too much (the extra time). Or it could be as simple as permits, clean up, take down time, etc

Did the Cincinnati Tri a couple of weeks ago that held the swim in the Ohio River.  Water temp race morning was 81.  Don't count on wearing a wetsuit.

I agree.  I'm wearing a speedsuit no matter what.

Welcome to pre-taper madness.  Just wait until next week.  I'm glad I'm on a two week taper.

yeah, i vote no wetsuit too.  I can't wear mine unless water temps are chilly...I get too hot then it becomes a distraction.

For my time I would love a wetsuit, I am approx 14-16 mins faster in IM swim with a wetsuit! I could actually break 1 hr with it.  As for speedsuits, I have one and the only advantage I feel (as a crappy swimmer) is I can keep my tri top on during the swim.

Last year I did the Longhorn IM 70.3 in Austin, TX. Everyone in the message boards said it would never be wet suit legal. To make a long story short it was wet suit legal and you should have seen the people buying wet suits at the expo. I guess the moral of the story is aways bring your wet suit (if you would rather use one) because you never know.

Also keep in mind USAT rule 4.4 "When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards."

Just spoke to the Ironman office and the course will close at midnight.  You're time starts when you enter the water but they said nowhere is it stated that you have 17hours to complete the race.  She then gave me an example of Germany's course and said it is a 15 hour cutoff.  I am going to need every bit of the 17 hours to finish this course. She said people are really nice and if I tell them I need all 17 hours they will let me get in front of them....yeah right!

Wow!  I wonder if folks will sleep in tents to make sure they're at the front.  Maybe Coach K will bring some pizza.

That's a PITA if you have been training with the expectation of 17 hours to finish.  Everything I'd heard/read suggested that the clock starts with the last swimmer to enter.

I was looking a the events schedule that came out with the athlete guide.  It says there's a mandatory age group meeting after the welcome dinner 6:00-7:30 pm on Friday night. Is that really mandatory?   I don't generally like the group dinner so I wasn't planning on attending?

Anyone remember from last year???????

Looks to be a lot of excitement building for IMKY.  Last year my Son & I watched/cheered/rang the cowbell along the bike route in Oldham Co. as it came through Buckner & LaGrange.  We had so much fun and were just in awe of this amazing endurance event and all the athletes that participated.
One thing that happens as you swim, bike and run past us folks on the side of the course whether you realize it or not is that you are offering up inspiration.  You inspired me to to get back out on the bike, to give running another chance.  Well it's almost been a year and I am still out riding, as well as running.  No where even close to what you all do, but I am still chugging along and working on getting ready for a du in Sept.  I would not be doing this if it were not for the inspiration that washed over me that hot & humid August day in KY last year.
This year, I along with my Wife & Son will be volunteering for IMKY for 4 days, everything from check in to bike course to bike catcher and later we will be at the finish line clapping and cheering as you become an Ironman and inspire even more people.
Thanks, Scott B.

Ease up on those legs!!  You certainly know how your body reacts to these work outs and heals up, but might want to take it a little easier.  Bravo for doing the overmileage bike rides, but anything over 120 seems awfully excessive ... 140 .. 150?  Not sure what you are gaining there.  Training while injured = more injuries!  Its the craziest thing to think about this close to the end, but suggesting resting up and getting more than 1 week of taper would likely be more.

Tri-Wog StL - 2009-08-05 12:31 PM I'm still on the partially capable team.........tried to run two miles last night after a ride and my calf is still showing signs of soreness!!  I am taking another full week of from running and going to be doing more overmileage bike rides and hope that I'll be O.K. come race day.........looks like a 1 week IM taper for me......yikes!

Anyone else have any thoughts on how to keep things together while injured this late in the game?  I was able to run 13.1+ at camp on July 25th and then the couple of miles last night.....I think if I can get the calf healed before race day, I should be able to suffer out to a decent IM marathon....
