lyssa-gator - 2009-02-17 1:02 PM sorry, i was kind of MIA yesterday. ok though, if we're gonna talk about food i have a question.
soy milk. someone fill me in. i've heard that it's great, i've heard that if you substitute it in lattes, it's great, i've heard that if you have too much, it's bad for you, i've heard that it's all fine UNLESS you heat it up, then it causes cancer (or something) i've heard that if you heat it up WRONG it doesn't cause cancer, it just messes you up in the stomach. my thing is that i'm NOT going vegan or anthing, (at least not yet) but i'm trying to really limit my animal protien intake. i really am not doing well at it today either (had a chicken salad sandwich with cheese. LOL) NORMALLY (as in NOT today) i don't eat meat, but cutting things like cheese, milk and butter has been a lot harder, i THINK i could go totally vegan IF i could still eat butter, but then clearly it wouldn't be totally vegan. LOL
anyway, i'm looking for info on soy milk. starbucks has it, and the guy i talked to yesterday said it was good, but i've never even tried it. someone else told me that vanilla rice milk was really good in lattes. the thing is (and it's totally selfish i know) i don't want to pay $4 for a latte with soy milk in it, and then NOT end up liking it you know? i know i need to just suck it up and try it, but i'm a huge chicken. LOL

SOY...definitely has a taste of its own....try it at the store...get a small vanilla flavored soy...dont drink it...I dont like it to drink...many people do, like to though!?!

try it in your cereal, Lyssa...it is going to be MUCH different then your milk...great with a little honey and fresh fruits on cereal....I suggest that you start with it that way.

I have not heard the cancer thing about soy and heating it! (think that just may be a new or recent wives tale) but you do not want to have it in heated items...such as coffee...it breaks up and spoils and can make you sick...I have tried it and it just curdles! no bueno!

and I didnt know that I was going to have to bring my own beef if I come and hang with you! my hat is off to you for being able to not eat meat...but I just dont know how you can do it!? I grew up in Texas...we had beef with every meal! and in between, too! I love steak! not sure if I could ever survive without it! I can go a few weeks...but I then go into withdrawals. haha. I am with you on the butter and cheese thing...what is life if you can not have A LOT of cheese! plus, no cheese with my whine!?

hope you will try the soy milk....I love it! it did take me a few tries!

MDHillSlug - 2009-02-17 9:52 AM After yesterday's hard bike I decided to give my legs a break today and do my swim instead of my run. However, it felt like they had the "slow water" in the pool. I guess I'm also swim tired from yesterday.

SLOW WATER !!!!!!!

I LOVE IT !!!! THANKS FOR MAKING ME GIGGLE !!! that stuff is always in the water here !

OK. Not that I'm opinionated on the subject or anything ...

Starbucks serves Silk soy milk. IMHO, Silk soy milk SUCKS! It's horrible. Barely even drinkable to me.

8th Continent brand vanilla soy milk is MUCH better.

Rice milk is nasty.

However, vanilla almond milk (Almond Breeze) is better than soy OR rice milk. It's the only thing I would substitute for milk, and it's good enough (for me) to even drink straight.

I don't avoid dairy completely -- I use half-n-half in the coffee -- but if I have too much, my stomach gets upset.

Coconut milk in recipes is a good substitute for baking. You can get it in cans.

So my stomach was a bottomless pit today. I think it's the ramifications of undereating yesterday.

I worked out Biggest Loser hard yesterday, but because I was at a friend's house, I didn't get the amount of nutritious food I would have eaten if I were at home. I didn't want to be rude, but seriously - eating one chicken breast with some spinach isn't going to cut it after 3 hours of workout out for me. Give me a salad, 1-2 cups of steamed broccoli and possibly a sweet potato, too, and now you're talking. And maybe some fruit for dessert.

This raises two issues for me:
1. It reiterates the important to me of making sure to get healthy food in the tummy when I'm hungry, especially after working out hard.

2. How do you tell your friend that she needs to feed ya' more, when she knows you're trying to lose weight? Hmm ....

I'm going to gain something tomorrow, but I'm not beating myself up realizing how what I didn't eat Monday really affected me.

I posed this story on your blog, but thought I'd share here too because it's pretty funny ...

So I'm on my third date with my now-spouse. We've only known each other for a couple of weeks, and it's my first time at his apartment. We decide to go on a hike in a fairly remote, redneck area, and he gets out a shutgun to take with.

"No way," I tell him. "I'm sorry, but I just don't know you well enough to go into the woods with you with a shutgun."

"O-K," he says. "But you realize there are bears out on that mountain, right?"

"Yes, but sorry, I'm just not comfortable."

So we get up there. And wouldn't you know it -- there are bear tracks surrounded by BLOOD!

I was so freaked out. He still laughs about that story to this day.

I'm watching "The Biggest Loser" right now trying to get my iPod set up on the new computer. I'm very, very annoyed that it won't automatically copy my playlists into my library. Grr ... I'm kinda picky about stuff like that.

I realize the Biggest Loser is sensational, reality TV that also has these annoying ads in it, but I really enjoy it. I find it motivating, if not at times irritating. I personally am cheering for the purple team.

I also like seeing what the women weigh and how my body will change as the weight comes off.

Oh! And I almost forgot to post my plantar fascia is doing really well. I did my first jogging tests last week, and so far so good!!! I am very happy.

And THIS time, I am going to keep it super, super short. It will actually take a lot of self-discipline to keep my running intervals very short because I know I have the fitness to go out and jog but my tendons need time to adjust. That's what's really hard about it - is having that discipline to NOT run when you know you could, especially when people you know are watching.

Oh geez, I just checked the list of participants for the Gulf Coast HIM, and I really did it -- I'm listed.  OMG!  I definitely need to have my head examined.

Susie, I know I said I'd talk about training for an HIM.  I'm going to gather my thoughts (such as they are!), then do it.  But I'm going to catch my breath first.   And by the way I love The Biggest Loser too!  It is amazing what they do.  I wonder how long they really train each day, and I can't tell by watching.  But what would it be like to actually have that kind of time to devote?

For those of you who watch the "Torture Dan" chronicles, he didn't torture me today.  I'm not really sure why, except maybe that I ran 12 miles yesterday and he knew it.  He promises that next Tuesday will be an easy one too, since I'm doing my half mary that weekend.  I think I need a "Torture Dan" to inspire me in swimming and biking too!

Hey everyone.   I visited by local bike shop to take a look at a better bike.  The shop owner recommended that as a beginner I would be better off going with an aluminum frame and carbon forks.   He said that he has seen too many people spend a ton on a carbon frame and then figure out that they really don't have the time or knees or whatever for riding.     Make sense?

Here is the bike I'm looking at:

http://www.bianchiusa.com/09_c2c_nirone_c_tiagra_comp.html

actual frame color is like this one:

Allyssa, I was thinking of you when I stepped out my door this morning for a run.  It was raining!  Well, it was actually just drizzling and it was warm, so I decided to go for it.  But then it started to rain harder, so I cut off my last mile loop.  Please tell me what it is that you love about running in the rain?

I do agree with the shop owner...don't go to pricey on the first one, you will also figure out from riding the aluminum frame what you want out of your next bike ie: overall fit, pedals, shoes, etc... It seems all my tri friends want to change their ride after the first season whether it is carbon or not.

I did a really hard run this morning, maximum effort, to see what I'm capable of at this point. In spring of 2007 I was routinely doing this pace. I never got it back after my ankle sprain in June 2007. I don't really think it has much to do with the sprain, but more with the increased volume of swimming and biking. I'd be dangerous if I could run!

My first bike was a Bianchi ... I crashed it. Or, rather, a car crashed into me.

In my extremely humble opinion, I'd say go with the best components you can afford, regardless of frame material...

You may also want to consider looking online, too. I ended up buying my current bike online after 2 or 3 shops saw my weight at the time and didn't want to help. But I got all ultegra with 105 front derailler for a little under $1,100 online. The only thing I had to do was attach the handlebars.

And plan to have to replace the seat right away. Or, if you're like me, four or five times.
