Awesome!  I hope you love it once you get there!

bzgl40 - 2010-01-25 11:43 AM Whooooo hooooooo.  Got the necessary approvals from my leadership to work full time from home in Tucson.  My partner cleared it to work on call intead of full time.  Now, um, anyone want to rent a house in Oregon City?  It's really green here.  Trees, grass, and flowers grow really well.  Tons of hills to bike, mountains to climb, trails to run.

That's really great.  Congratulations.

When I've been up in Oregon I've noticed that moss also grows really well on rooftops.

So exciting!  You should talk to WittyCityGirl (Sara).  She was my mentor last group.  She volunteered in 2009 and is racing it this year.  From what I can remember, she had an awesome experience volunteering!

Congrats on the P2C JP! and on the volunteering for IMLP!  It will be fun cheering for someone I know in that race.  Might be the only one that I didn't know someone personally racing it.  Now you need to get your clyde brother & nemisis (fattyfatfat) to join ya for the 2011 race! Head to head match up! Mucho-funno!

Here's to one beautiful Tuesday here in H-town... San Diego-esque weather!  Sorry - northern peeps!  You all are invited south for the day! (or longer if needed

I LOVE bananas, they're one of my favorite fruits.  On average I probably eat 10-12 of these bad boys a week....after workouts, during a long ride, in a smoothie, add it to some yogurt/cereal/oatmeal, bake up some banana bread, and the list goes on and on.  Anyway....I've just learned some new and quite interesting facts...
They contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.  A single banana can fuel a good chunk of workout time.  But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Run down: The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake,
sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from
heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and
avoid morning sickness.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas
as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%.
So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.

Feel like I haven't posted in a while and have a lot of posts to reply to. Here goes:

Kim- I'm glad your knee is doing better. That's great news!

Keri- Congrats on registering! you'll do great!

Jessica- Hope you are feeling better!

All you people with new bikes- CONGRATS!!!

I hope I didn't forget anyone! I wanted to let everyone know that I am a captain for Relay for Life for a community service group I'm involved in, Clemson Collegiate Sertoma (Service to Mankind). We mainly volunteer with children with hearing disabilities and those who may not be as fortunate economically as others. We volunteer at Helping Hands which takes in kids who have had to be removed from their homes for different reasons- unfit parents, drugs, alcohol, abuse, etc. Our big fundraiser each year goes towards Camp Sertoma which is held in Clemson and the kids usually go for free. It's a chance for those who wouldn't have the opportunity to go to camp otherwise because of lack of funds etc. Anyway that's pretty much our main focus and we are participating in Relay for Life this year. If any of you would be interested in donating money to Relay through the service organization I am in, you can PM me with your email and I'll send you an email with the link to the website. Please don't feel obligated to do this, I just wanted to let everyone know about it in case you were interested.

Looks like everyone's off to a good start to the week. I just went to the doctor and found out I have a bad sinus infection so I'll be going to get antibiotics after I'm done with class and I'll hopefully be back to training next week! Thanks everyone for the "Get Well" inspires!

I love the taste and healthy aspects of bananas too, but I stopped eating them:

The cultivation of bananas is an activity indigenous to the tropics. It is a permanent cultivation that has established itself as intensive and mono-cultural. These two last characteristics, however, make it unsuitable for the tropics.

It is a cultivation that requires the following:

            - large amounts of land;

            - vigorous control over the amount of ground-water;

            - shallow systems of canals and drainage ditches;

            - high levels of fertilisers and pesticide application;

            - careful attention to plant de-leafing, de-suckering and maintenance;

            - a substantial labour-force.

There is therefore a significant impact on human and environmental health leading to:

      - a change in soil use;

      - deforestation and displacement of communities in order to extend areas of cultivation;

      - the loss of tropical flora and fauna bio-diversity

      - processes of sedimentation and erosion which leave the soil exposed;

      - contamination of the soil, atmosphere, ground- and subterranean waters deriving from        the high application of artificial fertilisers and high-grade toxins that persist in the air;

      - the loss of ground-water resources, owing to the diversion or transformation of ravines                     or rivers into drainage canals for the plantations;

      - the generation of high volumes of artificial and solid vegetal waste;

      - regular and irregular discharges of contaminated waste water;

      - acute and chronic effects on the health of plantation workers;

      - (negative) agro-ecological effects

All these new bike pictures got me thinking... New bikes can't have all the fun, if you've got them post up some pics of your ride. The picture with the Zipps were rentals and probably the best wheels my bike will ever see. Other pic is how I race her now, HED Jet 60 on the front, disc cover in the rear

Evondo, very nice. I may actually wait on the P2C, since I would rather pay cash, and I told myself I would get a tri bike when I finish my first HIM (that will be in April). It's a great deal and I'm still on the fence. But I think I'm going to wait to after my HIM.

the aero benefits of removing one's name from the top tube of one's bike will hopefully enable them to ride longer than 17 miles.

Who knew I'd learn so much about bananas today.

We eat them, the girls like them and I like them when I'm in the right mood - especially with peanut butter on them.  Ken loves the taste and puts them in smoothies.

I don't eat them a lot because they are mucus building and I notice if I eat one before a longish run I need to spit more, they are WAY high on the glycemic index = natural sugar but lots of it, can be constipating for little ones so we have to be careful and they are the most alergic fruit if I remember correctly.

Good and bad = moderation.
