Subject: ta-ta's make me happy!
SoccerGK - 2011-01-13 1:37 PM So would a training plan taking me all the way into September/October be a good idea?  I'm already building one to get to the HIM in July, so I figured, what's an extra couple months?

And, I'm bored.

that's a ways away.  nothing wrong with doing that, just be prepared to adjust it.

Thanks guys for your advice.  I'm not even considering an iron man or even an half iron man for a few years yet.  Sorry, by full i was referring to an Olympic distance that i will be doing in August, i should be more specific.  If Olympic is my goal this summer then is your answer the same in that the Olympic is my focus and i train for the olympic distance and not sprint?

In that case, then: Not so much. You can use sprint as part of your training for an olympic. Both require a similar level of effort. Olympics require a bigger base, but if you treat the Olympic in Agust as your A race, then sprints prior to that can b your B or C races, and you can use them to get a handle on your fitness and your progress as well as working on your transitions. Nutrition at those distances is not that complicated.

I would say that your Olympic training should be under way about 16/20 weeks out from your race depending on what plan you are following.. Up to that point you could do training for a sprint. The sprint training would be a good lead up into the Olympic as well.

Thanks for all of the snack ideas, guys!

Fruits and nuts seem to be an overwhelming favorite and they are an excellent source of fiber and protein!

I am trying to get more of those two categories into my diet and I love Trader Joe's trail mixes (esp the one with cranberries and almond/cashew nuts)  so that might be a good thing to have here at the office, in the car, etc.

Happy Thursday!

Nice post Doug.

If your sprints are pool swims it could also be a pretty big jump up on the swim segment.  1500 meters is a lot more than 300 - 400 for a normal pool swim sprint since the Oly will be an OWS.  So that's something to think about.

Olympics are actually one of the best races for the swimmer types, 1500M swim 24ish Mi. bike and 6.2Mi run where a HIM is 2000M swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run so you only go up 500M swimming from Oly to half but double the bike and run.

Nutrition/snack question: I have developed a reaction to nuts so have to find a replacement for that as a snack when out on my long rides and runs. I like fruit but carrying a watermelon gets tiring after several K    Ideas????

SoccerGK - 2011-01-13 11:42 AM Question:

How far in advance do you guys set your training schedule, if you have one at all?

I have already started base training for a May 2011 70.3 race... my coach sends my workouts two weeks at a time. We'll transition into full iron distance training along the way with a plan to race in Sept 2011.

Please elaborate, I see a decimal point in there and you are not Trevor, so I don't think it's a typo

I am in week 7 of 16 of my training plan does anyone else wake up an crabby and irritable. I have felt this since the beginning of the week and today was the worse I am trying to stay away from people so I don't bite anyone's head off. I have also noticed how exhausted I am this week next week is a recovery week I hope that helps.

yep,  sure do.  this is when i really start listening to my body and MOST importantly the support crew.  if the wife starts dropping hints or the kids start avoiding eye contact, time to take it easy.  i know i keep saying this and i'm not advocating slacking off,  but a day or two off will not impact your physical fitness at all and just might do wonders for the mental stability of not only yourself, but the family, friends and co-workers.   and remember you can always come up here and yell at us.  lots of folks say racing your first half is a huge learning experience.  i'd suggest training for your first half is an even bigger, challenging and enlightening experience.  and lastly, don't forget this is supposed to be fun!  hang in there and smile!!!  7 weeks til taper!!!

awesome job getting the wresting match in and cutting the run back.
