Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED rizer22 - 2012-02-14 8:48 AM Good morning. I signed on to the USAT site today to renew membership. Haven't really signed on to that in a while. I was pleasantly surprised to see I actually qualified for the USAT National Championships in August. I laugh about this, becuase I really don't bellong there. I had qualified by winning my age group in small event of about 200 people, back in Auugust, and 5th overall. That still does not say much, because I know I am not that fast. But I am considering doing it, only for the experience. I know I'd get my butt handed to me. We'll see what happens when I am able to start swiming again. Heading to gym later for a walk/run. 15 days until cleared to run again!!!
That's awesome! I think you should do it, it sounds like it would be a fun experience. |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I'm struggling right now with whether to pull the plug on Ironman Texas. I have a case that is scheduled to start trial on May 29th, so Ironman Texas would be during jury selection. While I technically have "permission" to be out for 2 days to do Texas, I don't know that I can afford to loose the billable hours (especially the massive billable hours that come with trial prep). I'm pretty sure if I don't make my bilalble requirement this year, I won't have a job at the end of the year. On the other hand the case could settle at any point and I could have given up Texas for nothing. I need to make this decision now so I can plan out my year and re-calibrate my training. I'm really not sure what to do. |

If you feel like you aren't going to be able to put in the training you'd like to put in, then I would pull the plug. What does Shaun say about it? |

The problem with keeping training and then pulling the plug close to the race is that I loose the peak and taper I created. Right now I'm essentially working towards peaking for Texas, if I'm not going to race Texas, I need to step back and re-plan so I can peak for a different race.

That should be cool. I can't wait to see what they come up with (maybe I can steal some tips). I worked on slowing down my turnover yesterday at the pool (based on the number of comments about it in my thread in Tri Talk). I dropped 2-3 strokes per 25yds, but I felt gassed a lot of the time. I guess because there's more time between breaths? |

So what? That's completely meaningless. Fitness is fitness. Keep training, make the call when appropriate. You have nothing to loose. You can pull the plug the day before the race, do a 2 week mini-off season, and get back at it for another race. You'll be fine, the idea of peoridzation is so outdated. |

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Kelly - good luck making a tough decision! I would have to say for me, work would come first, but I am not training at the same level as you. I would try to keep training as you have for TX and make the decision if/when you 'have' to and move forward from there. You can't control if the case will settle before hand, so it will be what it will be. Is there a certain date to pull out to get $$ back? or is the $$ just lost? |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Totally agree (although I don't understand the periodization part), no reason to think about pulling the plug right now. Tons of time left. Plus, if not ready for pure competition, use it as a training race. Do a full aquabike ... We had this discussion last year before Lake Placid because you were injured. It is already paid for ... Just sayin |

Dehydration after my long run? Eh, I'm not concerned. I'm where I thought I should be at this point. Goal is 110 - 115ish. Not sure quite where I want to end up. I need to see how I feel at that point. Kelly - that stinks about IMTX. Good luck whatever you decide. Rizer - Go for it! Who cares how you qualified? Enjoy the experience! |

There's no "real" answer here. Here's an article about against periodization if you're interested. http://www.allanbesselink.com/blog/smart/559-is-periodization-hurting-your-training-plan |
