Expert 1226 Chicago | Subject: RE: May "President's Cup" challenge - US Central Team Welcome folks who're just catching up now... Sesh...I didn't realize we had a strength column so I've combined my goal for the push-up challenge in there as well. We'll see if those 1000 push ups happen...considering I have upper body strength of a cricket. AWESOME. |

I did a stint where I pretty much swam all bi-lateral breathing and these were the two things that helped me the most. I'm not sure what it is...............but I always seem to end up on chatty teams - how in the heck does that happen FWIW - it took like three pages for Barb and I to nominate Bill to be team captain - hehe! |

And my godfather (who is heavily involved in the tri community) is in Franklin. Love that place!!Hey Team - I'm Terry from just south of Nashville, TN. I'm down in Franklin. I race for Biker's Choice up in Hendersonville. Some folks had mentioned bilateral breathing issues. What helped me was to expel all of your air thru your nose and keep your teeth together. This helps you breathe from your diaphram. When you roll over for another breath, you'll have a vaccum and your lungs will fill easier. Try to take a "deep" breath (yoga breath, think diaphram) instead of a "shallow" breath. Someone also mentioned Total Immersion. I picked up Terry Laughlin's book last fall, "The Triathlete's Guide to Open Water Swimming" and it did wonders for me. It teaches "long and slow" (which someone else above mentioned), saving your engery for the bike and run. Since reading that book, swimming isn't a chore, just getting out of bed to go to the pool is! The book won't make you fast, but it'll get you thru the swim w/o getting tired. Keep water over the back of your swim cap, that will lift your hips and keep you balanced, use your kick to keep your legs straight not for propulsion, point your belly button at the wall when you breathe & stack your shoulders. Again, this won't make you fast, but you won't be tired. Since reading the book, some other BT'ers have given me pointers to speed up the swim, which I'm trying to do. Hope I didn't sound like I was preaching. But after that disaster of a swim at that XTERRA last year, I had to do something. Okay, I have an 8:30 PM date with my bed. Mmmmm... NyQuil. I'm a big proponent of Total Immersion (self taught). Really helped me to keep my hips up and get comfortable in the water. Most of the speed followed once I improved my form and efficiency... |
