I have a food question:

After I swim I crave salty food. So much, that it's hard to get home without stopping for Fries somewhere.

Does anyone else experience this or know why I do? Suggestions for how to deal with it?

Thanks-Heidi

I would say that you are either dehydrated a bit, and/or the chlorine in the water is causing you to feel dried out, etc.  I normally feel really dry after, and immediately go to the drinking fountain right when I get out to get some water in my mouth, which is dried out to.   I also lather up in a lot of lotion after I shower or I just feel dry and itchy.

I normally only keep a bottle at the end of the lane for longer swims and take a sip after every set, but if you feel like that after all swims, then take a bottle with you to sip on during every swim.  I drink quite a bit of water once I am done to.  If your craving salty foods after, I would suggest taking a bottle of sports drink with you when you swim and sipping on it while working out, it should have sodium in it, and should help curb that craving by the time your done.

I agree... I would go with dehydration. I always crave salt when I'm dehydrated, I think (I'm not a scientist or an exercise physiologist!) because my body is looking to retain water. Before you go for the fries, try to go for a huge glass of water!

My check-in for the week... my pending cold has hit and I'm fighting it off. Took yesterday off. I plan to do my 2nd workout of Jorge's plan today, but may not push it. It's just a head cold at this point, nothing in my chest, so I feel OK getting in a 40' spin.

Thanks for the tips about the salt cravings. It's one more reason to increase my water intake. I bring a 700ml bottle with me and drink it once I get in the locker room. But clearly, I need to drink more before I even get to the pool.

Starting day 1 of Jorges program today!

Good idea, but dont forget that for longer/more intense workouts, some salt replacement is probably needed to.   In the form of a sports drink is probably ok.  Im a big Hammer nutrition and Infinit nutrition fan (Infinite you get salt in the mix), and Hammer I use Endurolytes.

So if your working out hard, or long, or are a heavy sweater, only water wont always cut it!   Even just adding a little salt to your post workout meal is ok, and might stop you from going for the fries

I do too and I have also noticed that after races that are long and hot I eat at McDonald's.  I get a quarter-pounder, no cheese, fries, and a coke.  Weird!  Why weird?  Because I travel all the time for my job and I NEVER eat at McDonald's and I don't drink pop at all!  It just tastes so good and goes down so easy after eating gels, sports drinks, water, etc.

That's interesting. I used to be a huge fan of McD's and BK. I mean 5 times a week. But since I stopped eating meat in June of '07, I haven't had anything from either place. But, I still CRAVE the fries after a swim!

You guys need to stop talking about McDonald's!!! Laughing That quarter-pounder sounds pretty good right now!! In college (1yr ago) I ate McDonald's pretty much everyday!! My friends and I were kings of the dollar menu (they have 4pc nuggets on the dollar menu that they don't advertise, since they sell a 6pc for about $2.50, just to let you know). Haven't touched McDonald's, Burger King, or any fast food for that matter since I started training in August!

Good morning! I just did the first day of Jorg's cycling program. Right now I feel preetty good. When you guys have a minute, will you check my log? Can you tell by my notes if I did it right? Nothing about this plan made sense to me initially. I think I figured out eventually.

Thanks. Heidi

I hear (see) everyone talking (typing) about this. Where can I find this? I think I saw it but don't really feel like reading it all, or know if I have the correct forum. Any summaries?

McDonalds!?!  My friend and I took our kids (seven altogether) to the pool yesterday so we could swim laps and went to McDonalds afterward.  I hate fast food but it tasted pretty yummy...

I have today and tomorrow to celebrate the holiday and then am starting my serious healthy eating program.  I can't wait.  I am hoping for better quality workouts as a result.

I wanted to ask Kellie once again if I should register for the Sprint (500m swim) or Oly (1500m swim) at Big Fish.  I know I asked before.  Should I do a test to see where I am at? Or wait a couple more months before I register?

I think it looks good! I'm not sure what the "levels" mean for you... One thing I kept reminding myself was that the 100% meant 100% of lactic threshold, NOT 100% of max. I don't know my LTHR (or max), but I have some ideas of my ranges based on wearing my HR monitor for several years doing spin classes at my Y. At least I know where my HR/RPE are/overlap. I'll be looking forward to doing the LTHR test in week 3.

When I read the thread, Jorge talked a lot about RPE because of the lag time of you HR to catch up to the effort. Doing the 30/30 intervals, my HR didn't come down much (might partially be due to my cold), so it was a sustained perioud at a pretty high HR for me (85-90%, I'd guess). I tried to make the 30 "rest" the same as the 10' warm-up pace (but inevitably my HR was much higher during the intervals).

I did day 2 yesterday, and my legs feel a little fatigue today, which is cool!! I'd love to run for 45 min. today but really can only do so at the gym (snow, snow, more snow) and don't see it happening, what with family activites all day. No worries -- 'tis the season and a small break will do me good (right?!).

Oh, and if you don't want to read the thread, I think page 7 is where the workout descriptions are. You can always just scroll through super-fast and look for Jorge's Q&A pages -- they're pretty easy to spot.

Well, since you have asked a couple of times now..   Sign up for the Olympic.  Its clear its what you would like to do, and its 6 months away.  PLenty of time to get used to the swimming.   I would say to put a focus on your swimming this winter, and make sure someone is watching you occasionally to make sure that your technique is good, and you are not wasting a lot of energy.  Wasting energy for 500m is a lot less harmful to the rest of your race than wasting energy for 1500m, and double the bike/run distances still to do after.

Typically, the longer you go for race distances, the more you dont want to come out of that water all fatigued.  So that mean getting your swimming distance up, and some focus on economy instead of pure power.  ( I believe you said you can power your way through the swim with your upper body )

Not sure what you mean by levels?  Is this your HR zones or RPE? For MS, HR should be around Zone 4 with RPE 5-6, rest should be HR zone 2- 2.5 with RPE 3. 10 extra minutes should be with HR in zone 2, RPE 3.5-4.  I think I got that right!  I have a hard time setting up my HRM for the intervals since my watch will only do identical intervals so the next ride, I am going to use my lap function instead so I can get more accurate HR data for each section.

He should have a test for you in his program.  I know he does, I saw it!   Use what he tells you to use to establish your LT  for his program.

Yes, the test is in week 3, workout number 1.  He has the instructions on his blog that you can print off. When you get ready to do it, ask me any questions you have.  I did it a couple weeks ago.  In the threads I saw some people made a few mistakes during the test.  That is no fun since you will be pushing really hard!

The levels I listed in my log are RPE. I don't own a HRM at this point.

I haven't read the workout for that yet (taking it day by day!), but I'd love to hear your comments on it. Was it a killer test? I've never done a LTHR test. I'm kinda scared of it!! Kinda cool that you are a few weeks ahead of us. Thanks for your comments/feedback!

I am totally confused by Jorge's program.  It is like reading a foreign language to me!

I took a pic of my cheap used bike today.  I am sharing it with you all.  I tried to get into this sport spending the minimal amount of $$.  It was tough.  I spent WAY too much so far...  I have a good job but my children spend all my money and I feel guilty spending more on myself.   I have new tires for the bike which I will put on in the spring.  I am hoping this bike will do me for awhile...

Brom-Cool bike!

You must be psyched to have the newest upgrades that you just got!

I understand about doing this on a budget.

I'm riding a Jamis Coda that I got new last June. At the time my goal was just to commute to work, so it's a low end "street performance" with a flat bar and nothing is customized. Eventually I'll get a new road bike, but right now I have a little guy in daycare and an 18 year old in college. (plus a 6 year old who loves organized sports, so we invest the money to enroll her in one program at a time). The kids definately come first, and for now, I'm happy that I'm healthy enough to pursue this goal!

Someday, it'll be differentSmile

It's not too bad!  You  have to make sure that when you enter the "test" phase which is 30 minutes you go at a pace that you think you can hold for the entire 30 minutes.  You don't want to get 20 minutes in and then have to stop because you pushed too hard.  At the end of the 30 minutes, you should feel like that was all you could do.  My legs were burning the entire test.

I made sure I had plenty of water and a towel.  You also want to make sure that you have your trainer set up and tire pressure confimed so when you do it again, you have the same test parameters.  I did a LTHR test this past summer outside and when I did this one on my trainer, my results were within 1 beat.  It will be interesting to see if I improve after doing this program.  I have never done anything like this before.

Merry Christmas!
