I'm in!  A Challenge always makes it more likely that I'll get off of my butt and DO IT!!  Anyone else?  Can the rides and runs be indoors OR out?

I'll do the Ironman challenge but think I need to stretch it a bit...do a double Ironman and ideally a triple but my coach doesn't have me riding that much in the winter as I'm working on my weaknesses which are my run and swim.

It sounds like a fun challenge for cold January

We all should be working on our weaknesses as that will reap the greatest benefit come next race season.

Linda

Of course, either indoors or outdoors, Linda!  It might be too cold to run outside or more convenient to ride on the drainer.  Also, adjust the goals to suit you-- if time is better or easier to keep track than distance, or you need to substitute strength training for swim without pool access or whatever, that works too... just write it down so you commit to something.  Here's what I'll be keeping track of on my blog as my minimum tri-sport goals for Jan:  (The biking is going to be the big stretch for me!)

January Ironman Challenge

 0.0 of 112 mi

 0.0 of 26.2 mi

 0.0 of 2.4 mi

I'd love to hear everyone else's goals, whether or not you'll do Ironman in Jan!

That ironman challange sounds like fun. Unfortunatly I will have to bow out of that one.

For January I need to up my running, December was a slack month, and continue to increase my biking. Maybe go for a couple swims, lol.

Hmmm...a challenge sounds great! Think I might have to double or even triple it though.....mileage junkie that I am. Let me do the metric conversions and then see what I'm up for......

I'm in for the challenge also!!

Thank you so much for your support ya'll.  Like Custer said earlier, I so appreciate the words of encouragement you've been putting in my blog.  I have never tried to do anything like this EVER and it's so wonderful to have a support group to lean on.

God Bless!

Just a word of caution folks, you need to always follow your training plan as that is designed to get you ready for what you are training for. Challenges are great fun and can be super motivating but don't overdo one sport and skip other workouts in order to make the challenge. I try to look at what my training will be for the month and sign up for challenges knowing that if I do all my workouts I'll make my challenge goal.

If you aren't following a training plan please consider choosing one and following it. Consistent training is the way to improve and off season can be a huge time for improvement. I totally understand traveling, difficult situations and the like, but as a general rule following a plan is best way to see improvements.

Thanks for the common sense Kathy!! I am actually going to have a real coach this year!! (last year I was part of a group, but there was not any individual support, just a suggestion about how many hours in total to put in every week). I am really excited to work with this guy, he is the best tri coach in my city by far and away. We'll see what he has in store for me!

YEAH for the challenge!!  I'm training for a 10K and using a plan from runnners mag.com - it has me running 56 milies this coming month - so i'll do a double iron distance for that leg...

the swim i can do for sure in the pool. ( i may end up doubling that but really need to focus on the run so i'll go conservative)

now for the bike, thats harder to equate becase i'm a spinner not a drainer... so if I just take an average pace of 15mph divided by 112 hrs then i need about 7 1/2 hours of spin class - right?  two classes a week - i can do that!

if there are any Nike+ fans out there that want to double-down with a challenge there, too let me know!!  Mina?!?!??!

Hey, I'm with Kathy on that one.  Be smart and follow a training plan.  That is a challenge enough for most of us.  Adding in volume if you haven't been doing much is the fast tack to getting sidelined with an injury.

For those who want a challenge but aren't ready for the volume I would simply challege you to pick a training plan and stick with it.  Lots here on the site for off season choices.  Work on your limiter first.  It's hard to work on the thing you like least or feel "worst" at.  That's what makes it a physical and mental challenge.

Ha, I love that, pick a plan and stick with it. Wow, that would be a challange.

Hey, what do you guys think, I really only have one A race this year, the Calgary 70.3 on August 2. Because of this I am not really going to start a "plan" until the begining of April (because March is mostly a write off). My plan until then is to keep on the trainer, run 3-4 times a week and swim 1-2 a month (I know that sucks but getting to a pool just bites for me)

Do you have other races to train for?  Even if they're sprins as train through or tune up races a well proportioned taining plan is going to benefit you.

That's not a lot of swim time.  Are you a strong swimmer?  My swim is average and I go 3x/week to maintain average.  Less than that and well...it's a below average wim for me.

Oh, yeah... my 10k program has me at 54 miles in the month of Jan, so in reality I'm doubling up my distance for the run, too. I'd be up for a Nike+ challenge, (maybe speed instead of distance?) but not for a couple weeks until my plan has me up to more reasonable weekly mileage -- I don't wanna push it too soon. Let's think on it for 2nd or 3rd week in Jan?

Calculating an equivalent time works great for the bike portion. You may want to just want to call yours "450 minutes" instead of miles so it's easier to keep track.

As far as keeping with a plan, my main plan to follow right now is a 10k run program toward my next big event, but I'm still looking to keep with my goal of getting big miles on the bike since that's my weakest tri-sport... which is why the Ironman month works for me--not necessarily everyone else. I've got all these REST/XT days I need to put to good use! And some of them *are* going to be rest days. (No Peach Challenge for me!)

Even if we're working toward different #s for Jan or focusing on goals per week, post em and I'll do my best be part of your cheering squad!

Two races, the 50k in February and the HIM in August. I really don't know how things are going to change with the baby, and I imagine I will be wanting to spend alot of time at home playing with the kid and helping Marjorie as opposed to training.

Regarding the swim, I am no expert. But my Half time was 36 and my full time was 68 minutes which was about midpack. My time in the pool for 4k is like 100 minutes. My bike is near the end and my run is dead friggin last, I mean last.

Man do I have work to do.

Valid point with the baby coming.  Family support is critical--both for your wife with the new baby and you training for these races.  No need getting a hormonally charged soon to be/new mom ticked off.

Your  swim is pretty strong if you're middle of the pack.  Working on run volume and speed is your limiter for now.  A good run focused program ought to help a lot.

Just checking in. Sorry I've been MIA. I was out of town for the holidays and came back home on Friday and have spent the entire weekend unpacking and working on my rental property.

I apologize for not being able to catch up with the group. It looks like there's a new challenge and right now, I'm trying to get back on my feet and my focus for the next 2-4 weeks is just getting back in the groove of working out. My plan after that is to either follow a training plan or come up with my own (probably follow a plan on BT). I don't have my race schedule yet as we don't even have one up locally. Tentatively I plan to do a super sprint in May...it will be my first triathlon since August 2007!

Thanks for letting me be a part of this group despite my busy schedule.

I do plan on gleaning all I can from our mentors and the rest of the group. Looking forward to a great season!

Question, I am looking for a "good" place to purchase new shoes. I purchased my last pair at Fleet Feet, however, I took two pair back, as one caused shin splints, and the other was unknowningly a correction shoe. The third pair, I bought the week prior to the leg break, or they would have been given back too. Any other ideas, I am going to Spokane WA if anyone has an idea. Thanks

I don't know any run stores in Spokane, bring in the old shoes wherever you go and tell them what your problems with them are before you look at anything.  Let them know what kinds of issues you have from the injury.  I'd stick with a shop near home if possible, just so you have consistent folks to deal with but if the only option is to buy while away a reputable lrs is definitely in order.  Have you tried the Washington state board for referrals to a good store?  You can pull them down from the bottom page I think of the control panel.

i plugged in the 'winter maintenace for first year' and changed the run to be my 10K training from runnersworld.com. As i get closer to the season opener sprint i'll look to raising the bar for my first Oly on June 6th - but for now its just right!

so today is 30'/800m swim and 2 mile  (+1 mile w/u-c/d) run!!

 Have a great day everyone!

I like the idea of the Ironman challenge, but realistically I will get in the swim and run distance in the first week and then struggle to get in the bike miles the entire month.  However, since I really do want to get in the bike miles, I am in for the challenge.  It will be tough to do, but that is the whole point of a challenge, isn't it?

As for the other challenges, I am in for another month of peaches.  Boy, I tell you that challenge really made me do something every single day.  I can't say that I ever did 31 straight days of some sort of exercise before.

I am also going to do the swim challenge and aim to get my 100 meter swim time down to 2:30.  It is pretty close to 3 minutes now.  Don't know if that is a doable challenge or not.  I have the TriSwimCoach DVD that I haven't watched yet (I understand that it will be more helpful if I actually watch it) plus I am thinking about signing up for the adult intermediate level swimming lessons, which are supposed to be geared toward improving techniques and teaching the strokes that you don't know, such as butterfly for me.

Anyway, I have mostly been without internet access the last couple days, but am now home, back to work, back to the regular routine.  I have started CrossFit and they assure me, promise me, guarantee me that my running and biking times will decrease.  We will see.

Have a good day all.

Leah
