The last 2 years, temps were above normal with highs in the low-90's.

This year, the race is 3 weeks later so that should further ease the temps. Normal high for that time of the year is around 80. Best guess will be mid- to upper-60's at race start.

I'm coming from Phoenix, AZ and this is my first HIM. I'm really looking forward to joining my San Antonio friends at the Longhorn! Questions:  What is the average temperature? (I'm used to HOT).  What was the temperature like last year?   Is it windy?

Last year the wind was 20+ mph and swirling, it felt like the entire bike ride was into a headwind. I'm praying it's not like that this year.

I don't remember big winds on the bike...maybe the last 10 miles I remember decent wind, but sometimes I get in the "zone" and forget these things.

HOWEVER, about the windy question, chances are there will be wind.  Central Texas is often a nice wind corridor, and somehow it's always a headwind, never a tailwind. If I were a scientist, I might study it, but since I'm not, I just gripe about it. With the start date being towards the end of Oct there is really a much better chance to have some very nice weather.  It's been a little toasty the past few years, but the late date truly should help with that.  I am sure if you went to swim in the lake right now it'd be lwarm, not kind of warm, but quite warm, bath water.  There is a power plant on the lake and it keeps the temps a little warmer than some of the surrounding lakes.  But again, later start to race could definitely result in some cooler temps.

For those of us in the BOP, it was plenty windy.

I think those of us that were lucky enough to have good bike splits (mine was 2:34:04) last year had some help. I never really noticed the wind and think it helped us a lot coming back in.

I am so excited to do this race! It's 12:55am in NYC, but I HAD to read every post about Longhorn 2009 and I have to be at work at 6am... Challenged my best friend from high school (class of 1985) to do the race with me and he accepted. I can't wait to already be at the finish line with a cold beverage in hand waiting to congratulate him when he stumbles across well behind me. Got my first pair of aero wheels delivered on Monday and have plenty of time to break them in before the big day. Looking forward to have all the TX BTers show this born and bred NYer what real BBQ is!

Wondering if there's plans to do some road work on the bike course before the race?  I just rode the course yesterday and notice quite a lot of cracks in the pavement, some as wide as 4-5" going paralell to the road.  Especially early in the ride where there were plenty of trees it was really hard to see the cracks in the shadows.  Had to slow my pace considerably and ride the hoods in some sections because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to react fast enough and my front wheel would get swallowed up.  Anyhow, I could see this creating a dangerous situation for riders as it is now so hoping there's some plans in place.

As a side note, sadly it took me 4 hours to do the ride though I think that was more because I took a wrong turn and ended up riding an extra 14 miles, threw a chain, and forgot to check the brake when I put the wheel back on so it was jammed up against the rim.  Nothing like doing the last 20 miles feeling like you're pedeling against a 40mph headwind

Be careful what you wish for. All the recent road repairs in our area have been using that chip-seal method (small, black rocks and tar) which I am certain slows you down on the bike, and shakes you to pieces. I don't know which is worse - tire swallowing gaps in the road or riding on gravel?

Hopefully we can petition to just get the cracks sealed, and not the entire road covered.

Ya that's what I'm hoping for.  There were sections with that new chip pave and it really does wear you down with all the vibration, and believe me, nobody wants to see my 220 lbs jiggling andy more than they have to Smile

There were a significant amount of those last year as well, it's a side effect of the drought and not likely something that will be 'fixed' prior to the race. If memory serves, they did a pretty good job of marking the larger cracks prior to the race and that did help quite a bit, so hopefully they have something similar planned for this year.

Keith and his crew were even out there themselves patching some of the worst sections.

NO CHIP SEAL!!!!

I'll dodge the cracks. I'm use to that. Cracks are better than chip seal.

8 weeks from today, folks.

62-mile ride yesterday with 6800 feet of climbing. 13-mile run today with 4200 feet of climbing. The bike course and Quadzilla won't have nothin' on me this year.

Of course, I should probably swim a little bit....

Where are you, Colorado? That's ALOT of climbing!  Yesterday, I did an Olympic workout, that included a 40k bike in what I thought were huge hills and I had 1900 feet of climbing.  I thought was I climbing Mt. Everest on the run, and it was 836 ft. of climbing. And you are climbing 4200 on your run?  Wow...!

Hmm...that doesn't really pass the sniff test, now that I think about it. I was just trusting what my Garmin and TraininPeaks spit out. But it doesn't look like that calculation even remotely matches the altitude graph.

Doubt it, that's the where I ran! Jollyville to Rain Creek, up past Floral Park to Lost Horizon, down Lost Horizon back to Rain Creek, back up past Floral Park again all the way to Fire Oak, right on Fire Oak to Barrington, back around to Jollyville.

Figuring by hand, it's a lot closer to 900 feet. Big difference! Still, I know it's more than Longhorn has.

Here's the elevation profile:

Alas, I am alive and well I've been lurking and reading the threads. Kinda letting you all do your thing

Just got done meeting with Hill Country Running Co, who'll have a fantastic aid station on the run course. Then, met with Cannoli Joe's for a Sat evening Carbo Load dinner for you all. AWESOME. A buffet, with EVERYTHING you could imagine, and it's all fresh. They take reservations, too. So, BT can reserve a spot for dinner....more info soon!!!!!!!

Sounds good...Cannoli Joe's is pretty tasty, plus you can stuff yourself silly. Go with the realization that it is, after all, a buffet and you won't be disappointed.

Jamie, Andrea, and the rest of their crew did a great job with last year's aid station. I thought it was super cool that after finishing in just over 4:30, Andrea was out there at the aid station handing out water and sponges, cheering on the folks that were still racing.

Keith, could you give a rundown on the aid stations on the bike this year? I recall a couple of gatorade bottle stations last year, is it going to be the same this year?

4 aid stations on the bike with water, Gatorade Endurance Formula, powerbar gels....I did an initial listing and it'd be 12, 24, 36, 48 miles or so
