Monty - 2009-10-21 3:09 PM I am back on the bandwagon and officially motivated again. I had surgery on Friday to my right knee as it has been a nagging injury all year and has prevented me from competing. There was a 50-50 chance it was articular cartilage damage and would require microfracture which would put IMLP in serious jeaopardy. Woke up to find the only damage was to the meniscus and had it shaved back. Should be able to swim and light cycling later in the week with full recovery in 4-6 weeks. Man am I happy. IMLP will be my second IM as I did this same race in the monsoon of 2008. First goal is as always to finish. I would like to try and cut close to an hour off my last time and race 10lbs lighter. Life is good. I think my wife would have kicked me out of the house if I had to be on crutches for 8 weeks (microfracture). See you all up there. Good luck.

Good news and a speedy recovery.  Laughing

Hope to see you there.

I'm focusing now on hitting a weight goal for Lake Placid.  I have a magic number that I strongly believe to be my ideal weight, and with a healthy diet and discipline, I think I should easily meet this goal by mid-Spring.  As an incentive to hit this ideal weight, which will have my body looking very lean and good, I was thinking of (for lack of a better word) rewarding myself by rockin' a speedo for my first full Ironman.  Ya know go Faris Al Sultan.

Would any of you guys entertain this semi-crazy idea?  Fred, James, Charlie, Jorge, Mike?

You know what they say, DC....nothing new on race day.  Which means you're gonna have to rock the speedo on the bike & run a few times in training.  Have fun!

I wouldn't dare try wearing a speedo first on Race day.  Ideally I'm thinking a minimum of 600 miles in the saddle with just a speedo.

First, there is a pocketbook party at your house.

Just a few days later, you are spouting off on how you are starting a new diet plan so you will look good in a bikini next summer?

Sign up for more road races this winter.  You need short-term goals to think about if only to prevent ideas like this forming inside that head of yours.

I will unequivocally NOT be rocking a speedo at LP, or anywhere for that matter.  From this point forth, if you show up in a banana hammock on a training ride, you take the first pull.  When you look over your shoulder, I'll be there somewhere, but going in the opposite direction.  Just sayin'.

I like how you leave out the part of you buying the purple plaid pocketbook with the rhinestones in the shape of a heart.

And I'm doing a 10k in Center Moriches on the morning of November 8th.  The Darfur 10k.  Wanna run it?

I'll make sure not to wear the speedo on any training rides with you.  Truth be told, I'd probably get 100 yards from my garage door, turn around, and change into tri-shorts.  I was hoping if a bunch of other BT'ers were willing to do it at LP, then I'd do it also.

Perhaps not having any big races for atleast six months from now is playing havoc on my mind.  Perhaps

As an incentive to hit this ideal weight, which will have my body looking very lean and good, I was thinking of (for lack of a better word) rewarding myself by rockin' a speedo for my first full Ironman.

Here's the thing, DC, the first 6, 7, 8 hours of the IM will hopefully be going great.  But after maybe 8 or so hours, somewhere mid-run, i promise you looking lean & good will be the LAST thing you or anyone else will be thinking about.  Sweat, bugs, sunscreen, gatorade or coke sloshed on your face from drinking while running, possibly bloating from all the liquid nutrition you've taken in, etc. etc.  Really, most people look like crap and no one cares.  I suggest you would be making a mistake if you do not pick your IM tri outfit for comfort.

Okay.  I'll trust your advice, Jenn.  I'll do an Ironman in comfy tri shorts, and then re-evaluate if I want to rock a speedo for my second Ironman.

Possibly bloated is an understatement. Some people looked like balloons by the end!

I'm heading up to LP tomorrow and am hoping to get in a loop on Friday. The weather looks best then. Since I've only ridden about 50 miles and only once since the IM, I'm guessing it will be a very leisurely pace but I'm still looking forward to it. I'm staying at Northwoods, I'll report back how it is since so many of us are staying there!

WOW!  Speedos for a full Ironman?  Hummm……..  Not for me.  I have tough or how did Fred say 'rugged butt skin', yeah.  Lots of saddle time to get that.  For me it’s just a modest thing.  I have been told I look fit so I probable could pull off wearing Speedos, except for needing a tan.

Now if you really want to wear Speedos go for it but be prepared.

NO way! I am too kind to expose my fellow female compatitors to such a horror view plus I like the little butt I have to mistreat it with 112 miles of saddle time rocking a speedo!

I rode the LP loop yesterday, it was incredible. It was in the upper 40s/low 50s the whole ride and I had sun for at least an hour. They have done massive repaving up here so the course is in much better shape than when I rode it in June. I was really feeling the effects of only riding 3 times since IMWI! The final 12 miles of climbing really beat me up. I was down to a 17 avg coming off the out and back and finished at a 15.7. I'm hoping it was the start of me biking more. Finally.

PennState - 2009-10-31 3:47 PM Also, I'm trying to debate a training weekend at LP myself. I may be able to make Jorge's weekend, but if not, does anyone else have interest in going up for a few bike loops, run loops and OWS?

Doesn't look like I'll be free for Jorge's weekend either but I'm definitely going to be up doing a training weekend (or two) so I'd be interested in joining others. When we get closer let me know which weekend you're thinking about.

what areas were re-paved that were not when you rode it in June?

Most of the Keene descent... they were patching and doing work on it when I rode in June. The initial stretch of 86 right off 9N, it was so freshly paved they were out working on it and the smell of the asphalt kind of made me sick. A lot of the out and back was pretty smooth too, again, there was road work in June. I'm assuming a lot of it was done before the race? Either way it was nice, there were some nasty roads before. Some sections still are but it's a lot better!
